If you've seen both, which do you prefer and why?
Personally I love the animation and impact Tenki no Ko had, but Your Name had a better and more reasonable plot drive. I think that Taki had better motives for going on his adventure rather than Hodaka even though they were relatively similar.
I rewatched Your Name multiple times, and just finished my first rewatch of Tenki no Ko.
Pretty much spot on. I think Your Name is really difficult to compare to simply because of how well everything fits together and plays out. On its own, I think Weathering With You was a pretty great movie, especially regarding the animation and sound (including the OST).
RADWIMPS really tugged at my heartstrings in Your Name, and definitely have not let me down in Weathering With You. Definitely planning on rewatching.
Your Name wins hands down for me cause even though both were great, Your Name had more of a deeper story and it had a such a distinct feel to it that made me watch it 11 times (not bluffing). I can't describe this feeling well but Your Name left a void in my soul, a craving for a movie on that level, but till now I have had no luck in finding such a phenomenal movie. I went to watch Tenki No Ko back when it aired here in the cinemas and it felt more like a culmination of Shinkai's works till now for me and nothing much more than that. Shinkai's latter film was superior to Your Name in many levels due to a bigger budget and more time but the story did not have much impact. Like how heart wrenching the climax of Your Name was, there was no such feeling, I mean there were feels, but not as strong as Your Name. Yeah I know Tenki No Ko had a more meaningful message behind it while Your Name did not have any of it, still I would watch Your Name once again than Tenki No Ko if I were given a choice. Although it is solely my opinion, feel free for constructive criticism!
It's interesting that people say they preferred the story of Your Name. And I'm not saying that to be passive-aggressive, it's legitimately interesting to see how our opinions differ. While, in terms of the main characters, Your Name had the sadder ending, I felt myself not caring as much, as I didn't connect to the characters nor their bond as much as I did with Weathering With You and that was the movie that hit me in the feels. I do find Your Name is fair game for comparison, but that's just because I thought Weathering With You was better, or at least more enjoyable for me.

I'm personally not referring to Your Name as a "hit me in the feels" movie. I was making reference to the fact that others in the thread that it was such a movie for them. Personally, I consider Weathering With You the "hit me in the feels movie." And yes, "I thought Weathering With You was better, or at least more enjoyable for me."
and italics for some reason
It's based on this
I do agree with this to some extent; I think the actual personalities of the characters in Your name are a bit flat. We see a bit more of the actual characters in Tenki and the side characters feel like actual characters instead of 'we're just on the side as supporting friends but we're nothing more than that'. Tenki just gives a more wholesome family vibe while Your Name is more between two people. I do enjoy the flow and the story in Your Name a bit better, as the spiritual elements flow nicely into the story and have a reason for existing; something Tenki didn't really address well enough in my opinion. Your name is just a very cinematic driven film while Tenki has the same (maybe even improved) cinematic visuals plus a bit more interesting dialogue than Your Name. It's hard for me to decide, but overall I prefer Your Name as it feels more cohiesive than Tenki no ko.
Personally, I liked Your Name more because it was really well-developed as a movie itself, but the message in Weathering With You felt really powerful and left quite a big impact on me. Basically, I liked both (and luckily I was able to see them in the cinema :D), but if I had to choose the 'best' one, I'd say Your Name.
The thread "kimi no na wa vs tenki no ko" and it's comments have been merged into this thread.

Just finished watching Kimi No Na Wa and I think it is safe to say that Tenki no Ko is much better overall. Don't get me wrong, Kimi No Na Wa is an amazing show, I just think that Tenki No Ko is better. I felt so much more attached to the characters in Tenki no Ko and the story was more engaging for me.
Who cares? You liked Weathering with you better, I liked Your Name better. What the fuck does it even matter? We like what we like, there is no answer to this question and tbh other than the fact they're by the same person, they're different movies.
Holding one movie to a standard that you want other movies by the same team, company, or person to beat will pretty much just make you enjoy the stuff they make less. "Oh it was good, but it wasn't as good as xyz", "I was a bit disappointed because it wasn't like..."
I don't think shit like this is really that far from the Silent Voice vs Your Name debate; completely useless. Like me.
Okay so I'm not really a big Makoto Shinkai fan in fact my favorite movie of his prior to Weathering with you was Children who chased lost voices, the one that is the least Makoto Shinkai of the bunch I'm just not a fan of romance. And While I did find Your Name to be a really good show it was just that, really good a solid to high 8/10 but nothing that amazing. Weathering with you blew me away, everything from its setting to its characters made me care about ti more than I ever did Your Name. And again Your name is good it's really good but Weathering with you is just excellent.
Comparing them as Shinkai films, I kinda liked Your Name better. Compared to his previous works, it didn't feel like there were any obstacles in between the relationship of the main characters. When I think of Shinkai, I mostly recognize him for his themes of long distance relationships and barriers that keep characters from meeting, I didn't feel that in WWY.
