Have you ever gotten bad looks just because you love anime or manga and prefer it more than regular western television. What did you do? Just wanted to know.

I want to begin clarifying I'm not recriminating anyone with my words.
In some anime I just watched, there is a group of anime fans. In the show, you could see that this group (otakus) are recriminate by the society because the common sense is: they live watching their "cartoons ", that's all. Also, because hentai (I am not against the ones use to watch it) is the most common anime genre in Japan, the people think that anime is totally pervert (usual way of take it). Our society no use to talk so much about anime, they doesn't have plenty of information. The truth is that it's something "new" (because right now the fans out of Japan are increasing and people are hearing more often about) and don't get it as a hobby like read comics or watch movies. I don't negate that exist someone obsessed with anime and definitely lacks of social live, but it goes to other common hobbies too. The only aspect that applies here is tolerance and acceptation of others about your preferences, like another common stuffs in your daily life. Explain what it is to your friends or family, if they are with you I believe they will understand and maybe also find it fun :)
The question in the title doesn't really correlate with the question in the OP. But let's see, no, it hasn't happened to me (yet). As for why some people might be against it or see it as weird, well, they are not used to the products the industry brings. Little do many people know what type of entertainment anime is, but could often times be marked as Eastern cartoons by them. Now, cartoons are mainly aimed at younger audiences in the West, so they connect the dots themselves, even though the ending result might not be that accurate.
Another reason could be the general essence of anime. In comparison to other shows, various anime series are direct with their enjoyment factor. Besides that, they also aim towards perfection. They emphasize only the good and elitistic, unless there is a special matter that has to be expressed. For example, the character designs and characters in general are all beautiful. Their life is something you would many times envy. The location where they live is also pretty, and so on. Exceptions come with some matters such as disabilities. Glasses/Megane are a nice example, as they mainly exist to please the audience who find them attractive.
To some, that as an overall whole might seem "plastic".
Your second paragraph is such a load of bullshit.
How come? When I wrote that I was addressing the majority of anime shows nowadays in comparison to TV series. Well, that, and examined words from someone I know who dislikes anime in general. He has told me that as the reason, though in different words. The emphasis for his displeasure was in what he sees as excessive aim towards perfection/delivering purely what is wanted to be seen, and I understood what he tried to say.
After re-reading it I see you might have a point, but do explain.
"various anime series are intense"
Go watch Breaking Bad's season 4 and 5 and then see if you will ever talk about "intense" anime again in your life.
(comparing Breaking Bad with anime is heresy btw, it is completely out of the league of any anime)
How can you compared American television to the warped creations of anime/manga? Anime/Manga goes way beyond what most regular TV shows here in America, can.
Breaking Bad had a lot of killing and stuff, but that's all cartel and drug lord shit witch happens in the real world.
Compare that to the recently amazing manga I just read called "Dead Tube" which is aboutpeople doing crazy things, capturing it on video, uploading to a site called "Dead Tube" where the highest rated video, of the time period, yields 10 million yen, and the lowest rated video yields the person having to "take upon all of the crimes/money of the other videos." Which means if someone killed someone, you are responsible for the death, even though you didn't do it. You are responsible for all of the money spent which could be 10's of millions of yen. It's a crazy manga, and I doubt it could be recreated on tv.
People are close-minded and bring stereotypes into mind before experiencing the medium first hand (especially for anime). Most people I know who insult anime call it "childish and stupid" often because it is not produced by their own culture and the only thing they can think of when they think of anime is DBZ. Same kind of culture clash happens in music when people automatically hate on any foreign music just because it isn't "theirs."
I'd use to always argue against these people but I now choose to ignore them because they just can't accept anything that's new to them.
For your first question, it's because most people don't realize there are lots of anime out there and the most well-known ones are usually anime aimed at children and then porn. That's why they don't have other reference about what kind of anime do people, other than kids or horny teenagers/perverts, actually meant when they said they like anime/manga. It's easier to assume. It will take time and awkward moment to explain what kind of anime do you actually like (which they won't have a clue about) and why you like it (which depends on your answer, might completely alienating for them or not).
And lets be real here, even not talking about those kind of anime, there are lots of bad anime out there. And certain anime tend to attract problematic people, perpetuating the anime fans stereotypes. People who like anime can hate other kind of anime too. I sure hate a lot of things about anime myself.
Next question, I didn't do anything because I never love anime. I just appreciate the artistic and technical process of making animation and certain kind of animation. Even in hypothetical situation where I say "I love anime more than regular western television" and people low-key mock me for it, I just let them be, people aren't obligated to find your passion as interesting as yourself and vice versa. At least, you can sleep well at night knowing you're a bigger person than someone who judge people based on vague description.
I've never gotten bad looks or have people act around me differently because of my love for anime. This is because most people don't give a shit about it The only time I have ever had those types of looks was when I was watching Nisemonogatari on the bus. And I got to the tooth brush scene only for the person sitting next to me to glance over and see what I was watching on my iPad and see the scene and look at me weirdly, then I immediately turned of my iPad since I didn't want her to think I was watching porn. And the next day I continued watching Monogatari on the bus and the same person from yesterday sat next to me since the bus was full and glanced at my iPad and saw Hachikuji being molested by Araragi. Only for me to say "Its not what it looks like their friends" All while Araragi was Molesting Hachikuji. And then she proceeded to stand up and move to a different part of the bus while it was moving. Other than that I have never en-counted a person who judged me for watching it. that Most people around me knew I liked anime and they honestly didn't care this was mostly because they didn't know what it was nor cared about learning more. But for some strange reason most people knew about hentai. Plus the fact that I was one of those nerdy kids who played MTG in the library and went to debating club most people just didn't bother talking to me and gave 2 shits about what I did.
And when I used to read manga at school most people would actually approach me with lots of different questions about it, non of them ever looked down upon me for it. Instead most people thought it was kind of interesting. But I think the only reason they were interested was because you had to read it from right to left. After that novelty was gone they just didn't give 2 shits about it. And because of this when attack on titan was airing I was swarmed by people who wanted to talk about it since I had read a lot of different manga at school they assumed I must have heard of it. And for some reason people would always ask me questions like "Do you know when the next Dubbed Naruto episodes are coming out?" or "Who is your favourite character in fairy tail?" And they were always shocked when I said I had no idea about when new dubbed episodes came out and that I thought fairy tail was shit.
TL;DR
No. Most people gave 2 shits about me. Also don't watch the Monogatari Series on the bus.
Animation, tout court, is STIGMATIZED in the west because it is seen as "CHILDISH." That is simply untrue: LOONEY TOONS is more sophisticated than VIRTUALLY ALL of what is on television today. DISNEY is pretty much the ONLY animation that is seen as OK for adult & children.
It does NOT help that anime is foreign. SOME people even think that anime & (what we call) hentai are SYNONYMOUS.
This IS changing, though. Anime has been becoming MORE & MORE popular (in the west) since the nineties & it is definitely "MAINSTREAM" now.
HOWEVER, I predict that Korean culture (and thereby its animation) will OVERTAKE Japan's presence in the west within the next few decades.
I haven't talked about anime to people who don't watch anime, no reason to.
Also the looks you might get will mostly have to do with people not knowing what it is exactly that you are watching. Happens with metal all the time, my mom still thinks the lyrics to the doom metal I listen to are satanic or some shit, couldn't be far from the truth.
I've never got weird looks or suffered discrimination for liking it, but the reason people have such a stigma towards it is because of the fans. Just look at how some of us act.
Look at My Little Pony. Nothing wrong with it, it's just a cartoon. Then why does it have so much stigma towards it ? The fanbase.
Never really had a problem with letting people know I watch anime. I think everyone is too busy these days to care about people's hobbies.
When I was an anime hater, it was mostly because I thought that most anime was immature cartoons with little substance in plot and shallow characters with disproportionate appendages and big eyes to appeal to lonely guys. It comes from a lack of understanding.
groups of people who don't know much about a certain medium or activity or anything of the such tend to base their assumptions on said activity by their weirdest and worst examples, and tbh, there are alot of mega autists in the anime world. From body pillows with 14 year old looking school girls half or fully naked, to book shelfs literally filled with nendroids and figurines, to the most quirky anime fans seen at conventions, its really not all that surprising anime has such a bad rep among people who don't know anything about it. i mean, the same could be said about star trek fans and people who go to comic con every year dressed as darth vader, but well yea. Anime fans in the eyes of people who don't watch anime are like super nerds at conventions but with a slice of perversion given the vast amount of fan-service and hentai now a days.
does this apply to every anime fan, no. I've seen over 50 days of anime and if you didn't know me very personally, you'd probably have no idea i even watched anime.
tl;dr super fans and people who go too crazy over anything tend to represent their demographic very negatively in the eyes of average/unaffiliated people and it tends to lead said unaffiliated people to make assumptions about those types of fans whether or not they are true.
Like a few people in here have probably said already, they base their judgment on stereotypes. They base their judgment on what they hear from other people. The people they hear criticisms from have probably only seen bad Anime.
Also, the fact that animation in the west, as a form of entertainment, is aimed mainly towards younger audiences, so it's no surprise that people avoid watching Anime because they think it's for children. Adults and even teenagers who watch any animated show, be it an Anime or a Cartoon, tend to be viewed as immature people. They don't realize that while most animated shows are aimed towards children, there is also a good amount of animated shows out there that are aimed towards an older audience. I mean even shows for kids have some elements that only older audiences can understand.
I believe it also doesn't help that, as some people here have already said, people attribute Anime to Hentai. Whenever they hear Anime, they might think that they automatically contain nudity and sexual scenes. This assumption is very wrong. Hentai is a genre of Anime. There are tons of Anime out there that don't contain any of those stuff. While some Anime do contain some type of sexual scene, it's not that bad because there's at least some type of censorship to block the private parts of characters. If it really bothers people that they might be watching some "adult" Anime, they can google their ratings online and see what age group should be viewing them.
It's because of you, yourself is the very reason, I've seen many people who loves anime, but there's a limitation of good and bad, the good side is that they only watch if for fun, they like watching it so they still continue, but their social life is still intact with them, they still cooperate with the reality, they don't dream to be the character in some anime, while the bad side is, ( sorry if i hurt anyone ) Otaku's, Well to be truth, They're are the main reason why a lot of people think anime is bad, why? well they don't go out anymore, socializing in not an option to them, they've give up their reality, that's why.
Anime exists for one reason ( I guess ) and that is to make people happy, not ruin their lives, We can use it a hobby, like an inspiration to do pass by challenges, and make a happy life.
Not to ruin your life, Let me tell you this, ANIME IS NOT AN ESCAPE DOOR TO REALITY, Nor it will ever been.
Have you ever tried to watch anime in public? People will always ask "Dude, are you like watching some kind of porno or something?" I suppose the Western audience is not used to all the quirks that come with anime like dere types and fanservice. They also tend to stereotype us so every otaku to them is a shut in who is stuck holding their dakimakura while watching anime on their laptop on a desk full of figurines. They see all the fanboys and associate them with all of the rest of us.
Any medium will probably get hate just like anime. It's because people who choose not to experience it are rejecting it no matter what. Not all anime involves half naked girls and boobs. Of course, we all have our reasons for watching anime. Who really expects the rest of the world to understand us?
I've been watching anime ever since I was 12 years of age but I never really experienced major discrmination or the like. I'm not and doesn't open up to others easily so when people find out about what I like, I explain to them clearly what it is and they just call me and anime, or mostly refered to as "cartoon", weird but that's all. And I never argue with them to avoid the situation from getting worse.
I never really cared about other people's opinion in the first place, as long as i'm not going to get bothered because of it. If they're close-minded, then I would be the open-minded person and not get myself through shit because of their shallow thinking.
I think the main reason for this matter is that anime series are not common in our societies. And second is that it's "hentai " culture (truly misleading ) *don't mind me but i personally hate that genre.Although i don't think anime are bad or something like that while being an otaku is a whole different thing It's not that bad but some people do get too intense in that matter and begin to ruin their social life .On the other hand we also Learn from anime
It depends where you live. Here in America, we watch cartoons are children, but we are supposed to "grow out of it" and watch more shows that have "real people" instead of "imaginary people."
I don't think people here really understand what's so great about anime, or why people watch it. They "Umbrella" anything that is animated, and that is looked at as "Childish," whether it is, or not.
For instance, have you noticed a lot of anime getting "Live Action" movies or what not, such as "Dragon Ball Z, or Attack on Titan?" Why do they need to make a "live action" of something that is already amazing animated, and most likely MUCH BETTER? Because people will now watch it, over their animated counterpart, thinking it's better, and more "real." It's this screwed up idea in Society that is perpetuated and it's stupid.
[Removed]
"Oh those Japanese cartoons" I already heard that alot of times . Its the common phrase.
well " Anime " is really a cartoons, That's how japanese people call cartoons. But, the genre's is different to one another, I guess anime express more arts and animation, while cartoon focuses on the animation is self only, no arts, like more express part of a certain individual,
that's why anime and cartoons is the same, but if you want to call it anime, then be it.
Nope. "Anime" is merely Japanese for "animations." "Cartoons" is a Western colloquial term for "2D visual illustrations," which has somewhat changed over time due to the advancement of animating. Now it's referred as "2D animations." The two words cannot be used interchangeably, however they can be substituted for "animations." (with the appropriate adjective xD)
I've majored in Entertainment Production Business that included both 2D and 3D animation courses and English has always been my favorite subject. That phrase is irritatingly incorrect, buuuut whatever haha. Just at least want the reasoning to be known :/
Yes, that's my point, It has the same meaning but different variations.
..... Your point was that "anime" and cartoons" are the same thing and can basically be used interchangeably. That is incorrect and I explained why. Both words can only be used interchangeably with the word "animation" accompanied by the appropriate adjective (Ex: Japanese animations & American animations) not with one another. Your guesses at how these two words differ were incorrect too and I explained that as well.
That may have been your "internal" point, but the point that you actually voiced was the "external" one I responded to. If you had said: "'Anime' and 'Cartoons' have the same meaning, but different variations." I honestly wouldn't have replied. It's a VERY broad statement that definitely should be more specific, buut it's still correct nonetheless. However, that isn't what you said and it clearly isn't the meaning of what you said :/. Not trying to be mean--just informative :). I simply like for people to know what they're talking about,
I still don't have a fucking clue why would any otaku should care about some looks? What the hell? Chill, people, jeez.
Of course just in case you act like a normal person. We all know freakin dumbs who represent anime and manga with Pokemon, they're shouting random japanese words in public, stalking gay couples, shouting names of ninja techniques and so. If you're such person, well then, I pity you, but you can't blame others for giving you bad looks. I would give you bad looks as well, and I'm pretty crazy otaku too.
When you're so normal as you all say, why do you care? You should care less about what others think. Otherwise stop watching anime and reading manga, if being different upsets you so much. In any case, stop whining around, please. Thank you. And may the banana be with you.
Since your comment is so specific, you seem to be calling out the comments of others. My comment falls into the "normal otaku" category you mentioned. You asked "why do you care [about what others think basically]?" and went on to provide some advice, advising to also "stop whining," blah blah bah --....
My point is... My comment was among those you specified and yet your point was useless against it as it clearly showed no signs of caring about whether or not people like or dislike something I love. Another point is... Don't be so specific when you haven't read ALL the comments you're specifying. Either be more general (or direct) or don't comment at all. It only irritates me simply because I commented LITERALLY right before you did --. Had it been anywhere else, I wouldn't have cared.
.... the banana was delicious...
People generally have a tendency to reject things they don't know/understand. (Calling something new stupid because they can't wrap their head around it.) People are also generally more close minded than they think even if they consider themselves open-minded. Anime in particular has a bad rep to many people who has a non-existent knowledge of anime/manga. Hentai especially doesn't help it since most non-watchers basically lump the two together. Westerners largely view it as cartoons (if not hentai) and most Western cartoons, if not almost all (TV shows, not including Disney movies), are childish or purely entertainment and rarely deep/thought provoking. The ones that most Westerners know, (Naruto, One Piece, etc) are more action and simple in terms of philosophy and message so they (Westerners) write them off as not much farther from cartoons they have. They don't see it as possibly being mature or the potential to be as mature as say the Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, or etc. They don't see it as an art form/medium to tell a story. They don't know that shows like Steins;gate, Death Parade, or fate/zero even exist. It's also a matter of image. A lot of people who'd give you a dirty look for watching anime also lump our image in with the stereotyped hardcore gamer. When I went to Otakon to experience what it was like, some guy was there generalizing anime watchers to be 30 year old fat dudes who lazed around their mother's basement, which is most definitely not true. (It doesn't help that there ARE some out there)
How did I deal with it? I told anyone who had a problem with me watching anime to take a fucking hike. I'd rather stick myself to people who like what I liked or people who couldn't give less of a shit what I liked. If you're in school and nervous about being outcasted because of it, don't. You know those people for about four years and mostly will never see most of them ever again. (which I can attest to) Those that you do won't have any inkling of influence on who you become nor does being an anime nerd influence how people will see you UNLESS you let it become your primary defining feature which it should never be. If it's a random person on the streets giving you the stink eye cause you're wearing some type of anime shirt or whatever, then who gives a shit. It's pretty much the same as saying that you like watching korean dramas over western shows. Or saying you like Rock over rap music. Or anything else. If someone giving you shit for liking anime, tell them to shove it.
Well i would say people dislike animes because the Society tells them that animes are a bad thing.
I know many people who dislikes animes, and I also asked myself the same question so i decided to ask them why?
Some said animes are only something for perverts which does'nt make sense because not every anime is an ecchi or a hentai. Just because they saw some picture or so on the web
Many people also said that animes are extremly unrealistic and never have a good story - despite they never watched one
Others said well ehh i just didn' like them (best argument on earth)
The Problem is that they are extremly stubborn. To convince them i recommended some of them some animes they would like but none of them watched my recommendations :/
I've had my share of people that not only look at me sideways, but also have stopped talking to me (or made the threat to do so if I continued watching Anime/reading Manga). My most recent relationship caused me to stop watching Anime and reading Manga altogether for close to twelve years because the woman I was with didn't approve of Japanese culture in general (yeah, racist much?).
On the other side of things though, most people I've met are willing to hear me out on Anime/Manga in general due to (and I hate to bring it up here due to clashes of opinions among otaku) Cartoon Network showing Anime and making people realize exactly how deep/brutal/realistic the stories actually get and that not every female character is giant breasted, bubbly, and ultra feminine.
Needless to say at this point, but there will always be people on either side of that fence, so I say "If you enjoy watching Anime, do so. Screw anybody that says you're a freak/lolicon/etc for your particular tastes as well. They aren't you, you aren't them, be you."
Oh, and sorry for all the run-ons and side notes, I'm being lazy atm.
It's impossible to be against anime. People who say they don't like it don't know anything about it. It's sorta like a person saying, "I don't like books", or "I don't like movies." How can you dislike every book or every single movie? Doesn't make any sense. There are just too many to dislike all. It's the same with anime. There are just so many out there. So many genres and different styles. No one can truthfully say they dislike all anime, the same way no one can truthfully say they dislike all books or all movies. Of course there are some people who claim to dislike everything on TV, but that's impossible to, unless you only have five channels to choose from.
It's still impossible even with 5 channels to choose from. They then have even LESS of a reason to say that haha! "I hate everything on television, but I only have 5 channels so..." They don't even have proper television access to form a proper opinion then haha!
But I do know people who actually dislike watching the animated medium and prefer all live action entertainment. They dislike the fact that it's not "realistic" in the sense of having actual people--not necessarily the story. They can't see the story because the people are animated -__-. I suppose those types could say that since they will never see anime (or any animation for that matter) for what it is...
Haha, well, in terms of Eastern animation, not just anime, we shared our favorite song in my 3rd year of high school and I was obsessed with Vocaloid at the time and played Matryoshka, and I swear I got the weirdest, most disgusted looks from my class. I generally stopped sharing the stuff I liked with people from my class from that point on except for in my friend group.
My parents have never really patronized me for watching anime, and sometimes I'll force my dad to watch something I find funny and he'll play along and I really appreciate it. They don't understand that what I like can translate into buying me merch for holidays, though, and I wish they would. :P
As for your title, people don't like anime here because they think it's childish (animation usually translates to something being a kids' show) despite shows like Family Guy and South Park being super mainstream. It's also a different style than what people are used to, and if you watch stuff subtitled, people will be confused as to "why you want to watch something that's not in English" (because foreign movies don't have a cult following?)
Of course, a lot of Japanese people think that anime is childish as well, because it's such a career-minded country. Regardless, I like anime and nobody's opinion of it is going to make me like it any less. :)
