So, I just thought it'd be interesting to see how many timelines we have in Charlotte.
In episodes 9 and 10, we learn that Yuu's brother has the time-leap ability which Yuu's brother used to change the past. Yuu also eventually looted this power from his brother to save Ayumi.
Now, because the past has been changed so many times, different timelines were created.
Original Timeline:
This is the horrible timeline where Yuu, Ayumi, Shunsuke, and many other young people with abilities were captured and experimented on. In this timeline, it seems Yuu never meets Tomori, Takajo, and Yusa.
Timeline A:
This is the timeline where Shunsuke first leaps to the past. Although, it seemed like he successfully changed the past, people with abilities were still getting captured by scientist. Some of them were also captured trying to break their friends out of the facility.
Timeline A1 - A?
Shunsuke mentions that no matter how many times they started over, they still get captured every time. This implies that Shunsuke traveled to the past to change it again and again so they could get the upper hand to no avail. As it was not specified how many times he leaped to the past before he suggested gathering money to gain money to create an organization of people with abilities which scientists can't touch, we don't know how many timelines were born.
TImeline B:
Shunsuke travels to the past to gather money through gambling to help him and his friends gather more people with abilities. This is the timeline where he realized that some of his vision gets taken away every time he leaps to the past, and it could lead to him being permanently blind.
Timeline B1 - B?
These are the timelines that were created because Shunsuke didn't just leaped to the past once to gather money. He leaped multiple times. Again, it is unspecified how many times he leaped to the past to get all the money that was needed.
Timeline C:
Shunsuke leaps to the past and creates a school where those with abilities can be protected. This causes his eyes to permanently go blind. This creates Timeline C. Timeline C is where episodes 1-10 occurs. This is the timeline where Ayumi dies. At episode 10, Yuu takes Shunsuke's time-leap ability and leaps to the past to prevent Ayumi's death.
Timeline D:
This is the timeline where the series is currently on which begins at the end of episode 10. In this timeline, Ayumi is alive thanks to Yuu preventing her death.
Now, because it was unspecified how many times Shunsuke traveled to the past, we don't know the exact number of the timelines that were created. However, we do know that there are only five timelines that we should pay attention to.
Indeed, interesting overview. You quickly realise how many times Shunsuke has experienced the same days and events over and over again like an omen, with the future of him and his kin at stake. What if this happened, and what if that did? Is there just one reality, or are there more that overlap each other and occur at the same time? Those kind of thoughts and questions appear when time-travelling and parallel worlds come into play. I generally love these concepts in my series and games. A particular anime from previous season became much more interesting when this theme was introduced, and I've really been in the mood to finish my Chrono Trigger playthrough lately. Thanks for sharing it with us.
