For me i would say Fairy Tail, but i don't want to explain why because it's beating the dead horse.
So what are yours?
Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo
As a new weeb, I got this already classic recommended. However, as it's a parody of an isekai, it'd be nice to watch any actual isekai PRIOR to Konosuba, don't you think? I didn't have any experience with this genre, so I didn't find situations funny, just boring. Also, I didn't like anyone except for Megumin and I remember her just as bearable. Maybe someday I'll rewatch it and I'll change my mind, who knows.
KON
This is an anime both I and my best friend hate. Main characters are irritating:
Also, nothing happens.
but oscareczek, it isn't supposed to be Evangelion, that's the point of the show, they just meet and be cute
You can't say much happens in Kiniro Mosaic, but I still love this show and watched everything aired so far. However, the beginning of K-ON! suggests there's going to be some kind of story: Yui's not really sure if she wants to join the club and as she finally decides to, it's going to be about this club going strong. Oh, how foolish was I, it's not Hibike.
Season 1 has 13 episodes, but let's exclude 13th, it's absolutely separate from the rest and should be an OVA. First 12 episodes span over two years. During this awfully long time, they couldn't even make scenario for all all 12 eps and instead we got 2 beach episodes. Can you be a little more creative, please?
I'm really worried that I heard manga is worse than anime, just how bad can it be?
I understand what you mean for Konosuba, but it came out before the kinds of isekai it was parodying actually did. Things like Kenja no Mago, Isekai wa Smartphone, Death March, Knights & Magic, etc. didn't start even start getting anime until the year after Konosuba aired, so I don't think most of the fanbase even realized it was a parody initially. Considering that it was already popular when it came out, I don't it's wrong to recommend it before those isekai because it's already proved that the comedy appeals to most people regardless.
To be honest, the likelihood just seems to be that you didn't like the show's humor. Which is fine, I just don't think seeing other isekais is going to help that much. Though who knows, I could be entirely wrong, only time will tell.
K-ON is basically just pure "Moe" and good animated/voiced music appearances
back in 2009/2010 this was the shit and got meme'd into anime heaven despite many people wanting a new season of Haruhi Suzumiya (which also was a work of the time and isn't that great today anymore) from Kyoto Animation instead
as of todays standards it really isn't that good anymore once you watched Hibike unless you actually want some wholesome-moe anime without any other substance
I watched Endless Eight last year in March and didn't suffer… unlike with K-ON!
I don't argue with quality of music videos in the show, however they were so few of them they seemed to be included as "hey, this anime is about a music club, we should put some music in this anime, don't you think?"
Again, I don't mind pure Moe, anime doesn't have to have plot, both Kinmoza and Lucky Star are great shows and I didn't feel nothing was happening in them even tho, well, nothing was happening in them. It's all about the characters IMO, they aren't really enjoyable for me.
As for K-ON anime vs manga, it seems to me that people who claim manga is worse than anime are mostly the fans of anime. And it's no wonder really - manga feels a lot different, it's just a pure comedy and quite fast-paced at that compared to the anime, much less of this moe thing. I liked manga a lot and found the anime version uninteresting, sluggish and surprisingly unfunny.
So maybe it's not a bad idea to give manga a shot if you didn't like anime?
Did you read the manga in Polish? If so, is the translation cringe at times? I'm asking because my friend once rented a Toradora! manga with translation including references as old as to "Czterej pancerni i pies" (1966, manga was released in Poland in 2013) and I think in case of K-ON! it might actually add some value for me.
i agree with you about konosuba. i watched like 2 episodes and didnt bother to continue. i commented on a reddit thread about this and it turns out that konosuba isn't the gateway drug into the isekai genre like the anime community said it is. the two episodes i watched were somewhat funny tho.
and k-on...
well... considering you only went through the first season and didn't like it already, i don't blame you. i didn't like the first season that much
but i managed to sit through the second season (26 episodes btw) and managed to feel emotional watching anime schoolgirls be sad about their pending graduation so
all i could say without begging you to watch it (muh underrated gem!) is that the second season, although its pacing is slower (it spans over the course of a year) is much better than the first season. their impending graduation as an ongoing theme and their eventual separation is something i relate to
but y'know, if slice of life moe shit isn't your thing then i would suggest not to watch it lol
you also mentioned hibike and i read somewhere that hibike is just "a more mature k-on!" and i couldn't agree more. k-on! is just straight-up slice of life, whereas hibike! is more drama-charged and plot-driven
Well, I heard S2 is better from I think everyone who watched the entire series, but I can't stand even looking at characters. Recently PewDiePie included a fragment of (I believe) K-ON! Movie in his Engrish video and while watching it I couldn't help but wish for Ritsu to shut up. Now imagine going like that for the entire 26 episodes.
Regarding Hibike, I agree as well, I think this is what K-ON! should be (expect for being this serious, because it is a bit heavy at moments). But more importantly, I don't dislike I think any characters.
One Piece is boring to me, JoJo's art style makes my eyes bleed, Attack on Titan people getting eaten creep me out, Hunter X Hunter I made it to Ep 3 and I couldn't care less what happened to any of them.
You sound quite sour. These shows really did a number on you, hey?
Yea, the art is definetly older however, the story in One Piece is just amazing in my opinion from having only seen 61 of the episodes.
I'm more suited to something like Gintama which also has hundreds of eps to enjoy and the concept of aliens/samurais in Edo/Space intrigues me way more than pirates and treasure do. I get the "It gets better" but when facing 200+ episode series, isn't it better to go with what hooks you on episode 1 vs somewhere in episode 142?
Overlord (at least for season 1) really doesn't stand out to me as good. It has a good aesthetic and directing, but otherwise, nothing about the show stands out as more than okay. They do a poor job of conveying that Ainz is only pretending to be smart, they cut out the part where Ainz is from a dystopian planet and only has the education of a 3rd grader (which is more than a little important), the actual animation ranges from okay to terrible CGI, none of the main cast gets any real development, none of the interesting stuff with side characters from the source material occurs yet, and the discount Midnight Black Cats might as well have been cardboard cutouts with big orange Xs painted on them.
Also for more minor complaints, I have no clue why the 1-3 floor guardian would be stronger than every other guardian. I would assume that you'd want to save them for last or at least near the end when the opposition would have depleted the most resources. Also, every fight is just another beatdown, which kind of saps the tension since it makes the outcomes pretty obvious. I get that the fights aren't supposed to be the big draw of the show, but I don't think enough has been provided for the show to get entirely get away with it.
Shinsekai yori. Sure, let's have all the main characters have about 0.000001% of a personality each. That should make a good show. Even ergo proxy had character progression.
I'm not challenging your opinion, but I want to try to explain Shinsekai Yori, because I've noticed that this is one of the most divisive anime I like, and your criticism is true - the characters are the least interesting or memorable part of that entire show. It's a flaw. But ...
The main character in Shinsekai Yori is the world, and the people are just there to explore it for us. "Character development" is replaced by changes in our understanding of the setting and human nature. The people don't change - the way WE think about them changes, radically. And, in my opinion, that made it more shocking. They didn't have to become different people, I just had to see them for what they truly were all along.
Plus, the character who actually changes as a person and advances the plot is Squealer. This is HIS story. Everything else is controlled by the village's elders or whatever. The kids are just pawns and victims, and the ones who survive don't change - which makes the ending absolutely devastating. You expect your protagonist to be a good person who sees that the world is wrong and sets out to fix it, right? No, they grow up and see that saving the world is impossible and it's easier to perpetuate the system. There is no hope and there is no justice, and there never will be because people just want to live a stable life.
Attack on Titan suffers from the same problem to a much lesser degree, but many people still notice and are bothered by it, which is why they complain that the characters "don't have personalities" or "never change".
Does any of that make sense?
That does make sense, especially with the aot comparison. I might be tempted to give it another shot sometime.
I'll admit that I was able to put those feelings into words because I realized recently that I need to rewatch NGE for the opposite reason. I was waiting for the mystery of the world to be solved, but everything outside of the characters was just a prop or symbol. I need to rewatch it in that frame of mind.
In my reply, I sort of assumed you'd finished SSY, so I hope I didn't spoil it too badly for you if you didn't ... D:
naruto, dragon ball, fairy tail, one piece, one punch man, mob psycho 100, bleach, steins gate, gintama, myhero academia, blue exorcist, jojo, SAO, hunter x hunter, food wars, gurren lagann, code geass, seven deadly sins, akame ga kill, attack on titan, tokyo ghoul, black butler, cowboy bebop, death note, fullmetal alchemist, yugioh, demon slayer, berserk... pretty sure i've missed some but i tried them all and disliked them all
Akira is a movie that no matter how many times I try, I cannot sit through. It is so goddamn boring that I have literally fallen asleep watching it at least twice.
Honorable mention: Berserk. I've been told countless times how much I'd love this show, and I couldn't make it more than a few episodes into each iteration before having the urge to vomit from the edginess
I have not watched the Akira movie yet but I found the manga to be quite enjoyable and the artwork was absolutely amazing. Berserk definitely has a weak start but it does pick up and get pretty great later on I have only seen the movie adaptations so far and found them to be pretty good adaptations.
Rie Kugimiya was cursed with voicing annoying characters. First Shana, but she was still bearable and had cool moments.
However Taiga really grinds my gears. I want to punch her hard in the face.
Hate her so much it made the show unenjoyable for me.

From the New World
for a variety of reasons
also i'm midway through
JoJos Bizarre Adventure Stardust Crusaders
but i still don't really enjoy JoJo - i'm trying to get into it, there are some stuff about the franchise that i like, but so far i find it very predictable & repetitive, idk if it gets better later
I think you will enjoy part 4 and 5 more because stardust crusaders is more episodic with a stand that pops up and they have to fight him and its over but part 4 is one big plot and part 5 even more so enjoy!
Thanks a lot for this reply!! That's exactly what's been bothering me, you just know there will be a new Stand & they're gonna defeat it, while i generally enjoy big plots much more. I'll just need to find the energy to go through 35 remaining episodes hahah >.<
I love JoJo and part 3 is my least favorite because of the "enemy of the week" formula. It was so damn hard to sit through, but every other part I think you will enjoy.
Exactly!! Thanks a lot - now i’m even more motivated to continue watching at some point in the future :p it’d be a pity to miss on sth so good & loved by the community, just because of a bad arc^ although i’ve heard a big part of the fanbase considers stardust crusaders to be the best arc, but i guess different tastes :p
Evangelion, big schleep
because of the ending?or was it too hard to understand?
Nope, i quite liked both endings, the same for all the catholic references. I didn't like the characterization of the characters with the exception of Rei, the only one who grew up in the story: And then, why the fuck every operation did have only 0.00000001% of success but they always did it, wtf man
