It's over. That final was quite... rushed and anticlimactic.
As I take a glace of reviews submitted all around, they usually give the series a score of 8 or 9. Truthfully, this final episode has been quite an ass-pull on so many aspects to me that I have to sleep it over and rethink it all again before writing any potential reviews myself. I couldn't call it a disappointment, but a rather unexpected turn of events that just leans towards the negative. Or is that just a sugarcoated way of telling it didn't leave to my expectations.
Well, at any point, a closure was like the staff behind the scenes deemed it to be. It wasn't downright terrible, but it did leave me with the worst impression of the series overall out of all the episodes. Despite that being the case, it was quite good. That simply means that the episodes leading to the final did indeed bring me quite some enjoyment. :)

mfw he didn't recognize her

yea i posted about this earlier. Charlotte had some of the worst time-management ive ever seen, with it only being 13 episodes i cant imagine what the staff was thinking having so many of them be episodic "monster of week" oriented episodes while leaving the actual important stuff taking only 1-2 episodes. If this show had 24-26 episodes to work with, it would be excellent and would probably still be relevant in the future, but with that ending.... bleh it just felt exactly as you said. Anticlimactic.
On another note, i did doubt how this would be logistically possible given that he had to go to so many countries and take so many powers, but it seemed like he was gone for like a year or more and he did manage to take like 30 powers a day at least, and i guess it made sense cuz with each power he stole, tracking people down, getting around safer and quicker became more efficient so about half way through his "adventure" im not surprised he managed to actually finish the job.
The last part of the episode was..... predictable.....
i never really like this ship this series to begin with. You could see it a mile away and everyone and their mom wanted it to happen at some point. Part of me wanted it to happen too but it just didn't feel special and the out of character crying and emotion from Nao (even though it was pretty warranted) just felt so romcom visual novely to me.
The past episodes had a build up of something amazing and then this episode came out. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either. It felt so rushed how it montaged him plundering abilities over the course of a year or so. This last episode really turned me off with the series as a whole tbh. I guess it's not gonna be anime of the season for me.
Also, the power of courage? What kind of bullshit is that?
The show loved to mess with the passage of time, and it was very treacherous. While it still kept itself together, I can’t but think they tripped up somewhere. I wish they exchanged one of the “ability-user of the day” for an episode in the second arc or more foreshadowing.
Charlotte liked to pull events out of nowhere; crazy jealous girl in Episode 6, the evil syndicate in Episode 11, and even the memory loss at the end. (I can expect HakoMari to pull this last event off, when Hoshino practically goes insane at the last volume.) Which is probably why I didn’t really predict the events later on.
I did not expect Charlotte to end the way it did. I expected by the time Yuu saved his sister to make a big decision in the timelines; either to stay or go back. Instead, Charlotte went with the whole “consuming everyone’s sickness” (Flashback of the ending to Guilty Crown anyone)
Through all its faults, I really enjoyed this show and, to me, it gave a satisfying conclusion. The show kept me looking forward to the next episode and thankfully, I went with low expectations.
I understand and respect how you guys feel on this one.. The show wasn't a perfect 10/10, but even so, I think it was good. Maybe it's because I like to fill in the dots myself. That's what this episode made me do, sure it may be ass pulling to some, but to me it was just a way to get to the point, assuming that viewers are well acquainted with the way the show goes. Although the last ability seemed like bs, which i didn't necessarily see the point of why they would make it such a simple power.. But after thinking on it after I watched it, maybe it was a way to ground him, maybe it was used as a device to bring Yu back to earth, cos let's be honest, he was an apathetic god-like dude, who forgot everything, and was one terrible banana smoothie away from destroying/taking over the earth.. so yeah the last plundered power was crucial .
Overall I'm not totally sure how I even feel about this episode. I know that in reality we shouldn't have expected too too much seeing as Yuu had such a big task that there's no way we could be fully satisfied with how it played out with only one episode to do so. But even then, they could have taken that golden opportunity to carry into a season 2!
The timing was just no good with this series, it's been a running theme it seems. Charlotte is a good show, I love the plot idea. The ending was just so anticlimactic and predictable unfortunately.
Also, some may disagree, but with Yuu having amnesia, it's almost like his entire character development has been wasted. Allllll those episodes spent focusing on him and building him up as a character and to have it basically regressed because of the convenience of "oops who are you?"
This entire finale was just convenience after convenience. I love the show, I do, but that ending just did not leave me satisfied.
Why did he not disarm the guy with the crossbow after plundering that girl's power?
Why did he not heal his injuries after getting shot by the crossbow?
And then his brother randomly appears out of nowhere at the most convenient time possible and saves him even though he could have easily saved himself. All for some shitty dramatic effect.
I probably would have enjoyed this show if it was just about him traveling the world stealing powers. Instead we got 5 or 6 episodes of basically nothing and then typical key melodrama. Thanks Maeda.
Well I wasn't bothered that much with the ending, being a 13 ep production it was obviously that they were going to do a rushed episode. But I have to say that after seeing the majority of the 13 eps anime of this year, Charlotte's ending was the best by far.
The amnesia part was kinda the cheap move as well but hey, it's a Jun Maeda's work after all, of course he had to do something like that.
Still, I love the show from start to finish, PA shined again with this after Shirobako. They're apparently really serious of not doing something stupid as Glasslip again.
Like everyone else is saying, the finale of Charlotte feels a little bit rushed. I'm also not satisfied with it., I was expecting more out of it. In my opinion, it would have been better if the series had 24 episodes. That way, there would be plenty of time to explore the whole story. Anyway, despite all these, I think the finale was great. Considering that this Anime only had 13 episodes, it was really great. Overall, I really like the series. It was splendid.
Well it looks like i'm the only one who was statisfied with the final episode.
But i have to agree, that it felt rushed and the anime would have been better with more episodes.
But i all in all i really liked the show and it become one of my favorites.
I would say 10/10 (I know im the only one)
So you say you agree on it being rushed and that it could've been better with more episodes, but you give it a 10 out of 10, meaning it was flawless...? Which one is it then?
Yes i agree on it being rushed but i still give it 10/10. It could have been even better with more episodes but even with 13 episodes it was so good in my oppinion that this anime deserves a good rating
I also thought i would give it "only" 9/10 but then i looked at my list and the other animes which i gave a 9/10 rating were not that good as this anime was.
It wasn't flawless but in my eyes the plot, the charakters and the emotions are the most important aspects and if an anime covers all that aspects really well and in a way i like it then i gave the anime a 10/10 rating even when it has its flaws ^^
But a 10/10 isn't a good score; it's a perfect score.
And a perfect score means that whatever it is you are evaluating couldn't in any way have been better, meaning it was perfect; flawless. Your very words point flaws at Charlotte while at the same time say that it's perfect.
Doesn't make sense to me, that's all.
Yes a 10/10 is a perfect score and for me a anime with a plot i really like, nice charakters and bunch of emotions is a perfect anime. I don't care about flaws if the other factors are really good.
But i understand youre point but its just that for me a perfect anime can have flaws because for example the plot holes or some missing scenes can make you imagine the scenes on youre own and leave you more freedom in interpreting the anime.
But all in all our oppinions are just different thats normal ^^
Edit: I was interested on how you rated charlotte and looked on youre anime list and i have to say it has a really nice design (:
other animes which i gave a 9/10 rating were not that good as this anime was.
That's because your ratings are completely out of whack. Elfen Lied 94, Sword Art 96, Fucking Plastic Memories 100, that shit shouldn't even be able to dream about an 8.
You only have 4 Anime below 90 and one of them has no rating and you mean to tell me you don't see anything wrong with that?
Watch out dated joke coming through: Are you fucking IGN? "Shitty pacing, could be better 10/10"
Well I really enjoyed watching plastic memories and for me it was flawless so i gave it 10 points
Elfenlied was also a really good show in my oppinion and sword art online would also have 10 points, if they didn't continued it with Alfheim Online.
Yes i only have 4 Animes below 90 points, thats because i only start animes wich im sure i really going to like and wich my friends recommened me!
And you can say you don't understand my ratings but you can't call them Bullshit. Its just that everyone has its own oppinion and its own taste of animes. While some prefer Action animes, others prefer Romances or horror or ....
And I also looked on youre list and you gave for example death note only 3 Points while the average score of Death note on Anilist is 83.9 , or highschool DxD which you also only gave 3 Points while the average score is about 72 and you mean to tell me theres nothing wrong with it?
-of course theres nothing wrong with it because thats just youre oppinion and we all have to respect it and so you have to respect others oppinions
Or are you also going to tell me that everyone who rated Death note or DxD higher than 3 is retarded and has a whack rating?
DxD has crap Art, bad animation and a bad story, those are facts and not subjective, it also has nothing positive therefore it has to be below 5 (the middle aka. neither good nor bad). Does that mean I did't like it? No it doesn't, but shit is shit therefore it should get a bad rating.
Since you looked at my list you may have noticed I have a "Stuff I like" Table and boy would you look at that Shows with a rating of 5 are on there. What I'm saying is: you can like shit, but you also have to realize that you like shit.
Yeah sure my Death Note rating is to low, but I hated it when I watched it 2 years ago and I won't re-watch it, because the MC is a twat.
I also don't give a single shit about average scores, every single one of them is too high, because people like you hand out 9s and 10s like Europe places for refugees.
@MajorApplePie: @A4Asem does have a point there. You can't really judge how other people rate Anime. It's their own opinion. Everyone rates Anime based on different criteria. Some rate Anime based on enjoyment while others rate based on other stuff.
Also, like what @A4Asem said about your rating of Death Note and High School DxD, the average scores of these shows are 83.9 and 72 respectively, which is the total score of all the scores that people gave these shows. You gave both these shows a score of 3, which is a part of their average score by the way, indicating that you think they're bad. However, most, if not all, of the people who watched these shows gave them a decent score. So, I could ask you the same question that you're asking him. You don’t see anything wrong with that?
@A4Asem: Like what other people have said, you say that Charlotte wasn't flawless, which indicates that you did see some flaws, and you also said that you felt that it was a bit rushed and yet you gave Charlotte a perfect score of 10/10? You're contradicting yourself.
@MajorApplepie:
"DxD has crap Art, bad animation and a bad story" - thats your oppinion so you also give the anime a shit rating but it looks like there are people out there who like the Art, or the story of DxD and so they give the anime a good rating so you cant say that it has to get a bad rating from everyone
"you can like shit but you have to realize that you like shit"
Well again the point is that everyone defines shit differently, for example for you Plastic memories is shit and for me plastic memories is one of my favorite animes
@kinpatsunogaka
Well charlotte wasn't flawless but in my eyes it was still sooo freaking awesome so i still wanted to give it a
10/10 rating.
But since i learned that 10/10 have to be a perfect score i rated it down to 9.8
Amnesia huh? Never heard of that one.
But it was still a decent episode. At least we got that happy ending but I feel like the ending didn't really match the show. I mean for a while it was "whose powers are we going to steal next week" and then it was "OMG steal ALLLL the powers!" Classic Maeda. I'd say it was just an ok ending though, still felt like the show was rushed. Definitely a decent series though, but IMO, nowhere close to Angel Beats! (my all time favorite LOL).
But hey, Rewrite adapation hype train now leaving the station. :3
Will there be a manga/LN to continue and/or develop the series a bit further? That'd be very nice :)
As for the ending... I felt that albeit rushed it was definitely satisfying and good in the sense that it ended "well" and in the end people with abilities all got safe and protected from being toyed with by the scientists and evil organizations which I believe was what was at stake here once we learnt about Nao's brother fate. So, on that regard the ending was very good and satisfying and I'd give it a 10/10, if it weren't for the weird beginning imho which ended up being a bit...sidetracked from the show's overall feel and main storyline... I mean, ofc it was a great way to set the story in motion and it was definitely a great drive for the more "serious" episodes that came ahead, but, to me, it all felt a bit weird when ALL OF A SUDDEN, the speed guy and Yusarin were literally cut out from the show for us to only have the "other side" of the cast, namely, Pooh, Yuu's brother, and the overall "keepers" of people with abilities.... Maybe they could have done something a bit more...constructive in the first few episodes....
The fact that Yuu kept his "translation notebook" with him at all times was definitely a "feels move" that I appreciated, as it meant that even thought he knew he was going crazy, in a way, the feeling of "love" he expressed for Nao earlier, kept him going on his journey and it showed to us how human he still was, even though he doesnt recall it himself... Pretty nice and this is ofc, my own opinion.
As for the overall show, I absolutely loved it and it was definitely a show that only made my "new" relationship with anime stronger and it showed me that there are some great works to see and appreciate out there...
To anyone who reads the "review" of this noob: I hope you like it.
Overall grade: 9/10
