Can someone tell me the real order of Monogatari Series, cuz i'm really lost here.
it's up to you really. you can either watch it by chronological order or by release order.
Release order
Bakemonogatari>Nisemonogatari>Nekomonogatari: Kuro>Monogatari Series Second Season>Hanamonogatari>
Tsukimonogatari(airing later this month)>Kizumonogatari(will air in 2025)
Chronological Order
Kizumonogatari>Nekomonogatari>Bakemonogatari>Nisemonogatari>Monogatari Series Second Season
i would go by release order though.
Airing order:
Bakemonogatari -> Nisemonogatari -> Neko: Kuro -> Second Season -> Hanamonogatari
However, this isn't the same order as the books were released.
Also however, it's completely fine to just watch in the airing order. In fact, Hanamonogatari is best appreciated after Second Season ends, even if as a book it was released before the final arc of that Season.
Kizumonogatari will never be animated (don't believe Shaft's lies) but you can read the book any time after you finish Bakemonogatari. Preferably, before Second Season.
I'll provide some more info
Book release order:
Bakemonogatari (1 and 2) -> Kizumonogatari -> Nisemonogatari (1 and 2) -> Nekomonogatari: Kuro -> Nekomonogatari: Shiro -> Kabukimonogatari -> Hanamonogatari -> Otorimonogatari -> Onimonogatari -> Koimonogatari -> Tsukimonogatari -> Koyomimonogatari -> Owarimonogatari (1 through 3) -> Zokuowarimonogatari
Second Season is comprised of the following books:
Nekomonogatari: Shiro -> Kabukimonogatari -> Otorimonogatari -> Onimonogatari -> Koimonogatari
If you're into reading, there are also short stories that were released with the BDs of Bakemonogatari and Nisemonogatari, like
Hitagi Buffet, Mayoi Room, Suruga Court, Nadeko Pool, Tsubasa Song (Bake)
Tsukihi Eternal, Karen Arm-Leg, Hitagi Neck, Shinobu House (Nise)
come to think of it, although this post is 8 years old
i think this might be the first time i've actually seen conscious advocacy for hana after koi
so i'm interested in hearing why
i watched in ln order and found that hana between kabuki and otori
but do wonder if there's something i'm missing
I wouldn't say you're 'missing' anything, and honestly I don't think that anymore. I think the book is divorced enough from the context/timeline of the other books that you could see it at many other points and it'd still work. It 'spoils' things from later on in the timeline in a sense so maybe that's what I was on about back then, but I feel like that matters little nowadays
Usually I'd like to think that the airing order is the order that the anime is made for audience to watch in anime form, regardless of what order they were in chronologically or in LN/manga/game.
Hope this helps: http://anilist.co/forum/thread/129/1
@aabir, @RogueTofu, @MajorApplePie, Thank you very much for the help, I'll probably go with the Release Order since most of the people prefer it.

I'd highly recommend watching in the books release order! Chronological should only really be viewed on rewatch since the intended release was not that.

But in Bakemonogatari is it shown that how he becomes a vampire
It does reference it, but Kizu will explain all that immediately after Bake. Kizu is best watched afterwards due to the nature of the end of Bake however.
Thanks I'll keep that in mind
I would definitely do airing order, but with kizumonogatari after bake and before nise. This was the order intended by shaft, but the movie was delayed endlessly. Several moments are lent much more weight by understanding the events of kizu. I don't think the added mystery from watching kizu later is worth giving that up. Here is a great watch order graphic https://imgur.com/gallery/Ung4t
The series does have a ton of rewatch value so whichever order you choose it will always be possible to try something different later.
I happen to be an expert in the Monogatari Series.
Generally, the airing order is recommended because it's how most of the people have experienced the series. However, there are some points to note:
The other airing order follows the Light Novel publishing dates, this makes it the "official" timeline where all chronological shuffles are intended by the author.
The order is the same with 2 exceptions:
Finally there's the chronological order in which you watch them as they are chronologically placed in the story, this, imho, kills the whole mystery created in the anime airing order with Kizumonogatari and is more boring, since it's better to form a puzzle piece by piece rather than having it solved from the beginning.
Watch it following the airing order while having the chronological order in mind. I did this list when I started watching the series. The first number is the airing order and the shows are placed in chronological order.
For exemple for:
1) Show A
3) Show C
2) Show B
You need to watch the show A, then the B and the C if you follow airing order but the chronological order is A -> C -> B.
Here's my list for the monogatari series, based on the Monogatari Wiki :
9) Kizu 1-3
8) Koyomi 1
3) Neko Black 1-4
1) Bake 1-2
8) Koyomi 2
1) Bake 3-15
8) Koyomi 3-4
2) Nise 1-7
8) Koyomi 5
2) Nise 8-11
4) 2nd 7-10
4) 2nd 17-20 }
4) 2nd 1-5 }
7) Owari 7-12 }
8) Koyomi 6-7
7) Owari 1-6
4) 2nd 12-15
8) Koyomi 8-9
4) 2nd 21-26
8) Koyomi 10
6) Tsuki 1-4
8) Koyomi 11-12
10) Owari 2nd 1-7
11) Zokuowari TBA
5) Hana 1-5
The } means that it's happening at the same time.
So here you go, you can watch in any order now since you have both. I hope it helped and sorry for my bad english
The Monogatari Series Second Season is divided in various arcs listed above, Kizumonogatari is a 3 part movie, Zokuowarimonogatari is supposedly airing on the Fall season of this year.
As a huge fan of the Monogatari Series, with it being easily in my top 3 favorite anime, I'd like to put my two cents out there. The events of the series are told out of order deliberately to add intrigue and create a sense of mystery. Watching the series in chronological order is not the intended method and, in my opinion, defeats the purpose. The novel order is a bit different than the anime order, however I think that they should keep to their own mediums.
When talking about the Monogatari anime, I believe that the best order is the Anime Release Order. It's basically the same as the original novel order. However, Kizu is later than it is in the novels, though I think this works, considering how jarringly different it is from the rest of the series, and how it's omission leaves an underlying mystery throughout the entire series. So with all this in mind, here is the order in which the Anime series aired, and what I believe to be the most intended and proper order.
Bakemonogatari
Nisemonogatari
Nekomonogatari: Kuro
Monogatari Series Second Season
Hanamonogatari
Tsukimonogatari
Owarimonogatari Season 1
Kizumonogatari
Koyomimonogatari
Owarimonogatari Season 2
Techincally Koyomimonogatari finished before all 3 of the Kizu films were released, but I think it makes much more sense to watch Kizu first, because Koyomimonogatari ties directly to Owari Season 2, and watching it first would kind of break up two back-to-back arcs.
To summarize, all you really need to worry about for now is Bakemonogatari, since that is the absolute first entry in both the anime and the novels. Just to clarify once more, I highly recommend that you disregard the chronological order as a first-time watcher, because not only does it betray the intended order it also terribly rattles the pacing and progression of the series as a whole. Hope this helps!
Hey @xero don't listen to the silly people who have some misguided idea that the airing order was the intended order. Kizumonogatari was intended to release after bake and before nise. Full stop.
It did sit in production for many years hence its displacement in airing order however it is best to watch in its intended order. The first person in here, @skyebadoo, nailed the order perfectly.
All you guys saying what order to watch are completely overlooking Koyomimonogatari. Koyomimonogatari was intended to be read/watched BEFORE Owarimonogatari. It carries the set up for a lot of stuff in OWari, and so when you watch Owari before Koyomi, it's like recieving the set up after the payoff, which makes no sense.
Here's the watch order:
Bakemonogatari
Kizumonogatari
Nisemonogatari
Nekomonogatari Kuro
Nekomonogatari Shiro
Kabukimonogatari
Hanamonogatari (although it works fine right after Koi)
Otorimonogatari
Onimonogatari
Koimonogtari
Tsukimonogatari
Koyomimonogatari
Owarimonogatari
Zoku Owarimonogatari
Start with Katana Monogatari Katanagatari
alrighty... saw Bakemonogatari ages ago.. finally decided to see the rest, the watching order has always been an issue, but this thread has been helpful.. already downloaded the Kizumonogatari movies, will watch those and see Nisemonogatari next... after those 3 i will just see the rest in the order which they aired
There's four watch orders to my knowledge:
To get the best experience (and most intended experience) watch either the Light Novel Order or the English Light Novel order. The Broadcast Order is largely the same as the Light Novel Order, except the placement of Kizumonogatari is widely different due to the time and money that went into its creation.
LN or ELN Order? The reason the English order is different is because the original creation of Bakemonogatari as a series of short stories for a magazine, and likely in 2008 when nisiOisin decided the turn it into a full series he intended Kizumonogatari to be the first part of it that is read (which is reflected in the ELN Order). There's probably a source somewhere stating exactly why Kizumonogatari comes first in the English versions of the LNs, but I don't have one and its my best guess. I'd say just watch in the regular Light Novel Order, though. It doesn't make much of a difference.
Hanamonogatari is listed in the middle of Second Season? Most people watch Hanamonogatari either "whenever" because its very unconnected to most of the other aired parts or they watch it after Second Season as its the closest location for it. If you watch Hanamonogatari in the middle of Second Season, though, it should be watched after the arc Mayoi Jiangshi, which I believe concludes at episode 9.
People watch Koyomimonogatari between Owarimonogatari and Owarimonogatari (Ge) a lot? A lot of people choose to watch Koyomimonogatari between Owarimonogatari and Owarimonogatari (Ge) because the end of Koyomimonogatari and the start of Owarimonogatari (Ge) sync up perfectly and released very closely with each other,
TL;DR Watch the first list or second list, and the fourth list on rewatch if you want an interesting experience.
I very much enjoyed the anime. Cant explain why but i couldn't stop watching.
If I were you i'd watch it in this order.
Bakemonogatari
Kizumonogatari
Nisemonogatari
Nekomonogatari Kuro
Monogatari Second Season
Hanamonogatari
Tsukimonogatari
Owarimonogatari
Koyomimonogatari
Owarimonogatari Second Season
And eventually Zoku Owarimonogatari once it airs.
Enjoy Arararagi-san and the girls
