Not too much happened, but I like the way it is going. I just hope the ''riddles'', ''mystery-aspect'' isn't that illogical / easy as for example in Terror in Tokyo, where geniuses act like emo- children. But it seems more mature so I am confident about this series.
Terror in Tokyo wasn't much of a mystery, don't think it was even meant to be mysterious, since we knew from start who was what.
it was mystery for me as well, since their motive / their past was '' mysterious ''. But with my statement I meant more the ''riddle-aspect''for example the airport scene , with the chess-play ...which was unintelligible , it was just nonsense ,without rhyme or reason
Going by that, you could call any anime where character motives weren't initially apparent/they have an undisclosed past a 'mystery', which is kinda... well, dumb.
I completely agree with you on the chess scene take. The rest of the riddle-aspect was absurd as well.
nah sorry mate, I don´t get your point... Terror in Tokyo is on some pages tagged as ''Mystery'' (I tag it as Mystery as well) , and I just told you the reason behind it ... it´s all simple. It is because of their past / motive ... without it , no one would tag Terror in Tokyo as Mystery, but these two aspects are the keylines... ''mysterious past '' refers to Terror in Tokyo not every other anime...-.- , it is a Seinen / thriller anime , therefore if the past is extraordinary and their motive pseudo -complex / shifty then it is a Mystery for me , and I think it refers to 90% of every other Seinen -mystery anime .
so sorry I don´t get your problem.
it was mystery for me as well, since their motive / their past was ‘’ mysterious ‘’.
It is because of their past / motive
I don't have a problem with it, I just don't see the logic behind it. 'We don't know their past/motives' is not enough for something to be classified as mystery. Might as well classify it as a romance since we have a few scenes of affection between Lisa and Twelve. And if we search for the definition of a mystery genre in literature or other media, an abundence of them will define it along the lines of detective stories (more on that later, though). Also, before the edit, you asked for some examples: Parasyte, Honki, Gangsta, Aoi Bungaku, Berserk, Sword of the Stranger, Jormungand, Narutaru, Berserk, Ghost in the Shell etc. All with some sort of mystery, neither of them a mystery.
‘’mysterious past ‘’ refers to Terror in Tokyo not every other anime…
therefore if the past is extraordinary and their motive pseudo -complex / shifty then it is a Mystery for me
Sorry, no, if you get to say that Terror in Tokyo is a mystery because of "mysterious past", I get to say Attack on titan is a mystery because "mysterious past" (and I checked, none of the major listing sites list it as mystery). Classifying in a genre is a murky water as is, and we could be here all day arguing about what constitutes what genre. People mostly associate mystery with detective stories and their flow, a lot of definitons of it are along those lines. I can say that my take on it is that focus is what matters. I'm by no means saying that Terror in Tokyo doesn't have some mystery elements, but it doesn't have near enough of them to be defined as a representative of a mystery genre. It just doesn't put focus on that, that's not the driving force of the anime. Just like cool fights and other action elements trump the mystery about the Titans and all the shenanigans in Attack on titan.
So sorry, mate, just like you don't get my supposed problem, I don't get your classification.
I like the pacing. It gives more time to digest the atmosphere. And its a refreshing break from the typical break-neck action speed we've been getting recently. Of course, when the actual story starts things should pick up a bit.
Characters were kinda interesting? Wasn't too much of a fan of their pseudo-intellectual philosophizing. Aside from that, they felt compelling enough in their own quiet way.
Realistic character designs are a plus. The minimalist OP was cute and the ED reminded me a bit of Tatami Galaxy's. Linux fans should get a kick out of it too.
Pretty much my thoughts though I feel that the show realizes that the character's pseudo-intellectual philosophizing is rather pretentious (as in the actual character and not a take on the show) and the teacher is a flawed individual. The show seems to be building up quite a bit of stuff that seems to be dealing with isolation and self identity that can make this one of the more interesting shows this season. It didn't have the best premier but it's one of the more ambitious ones and I'm looking forward to it.
This show's slower pace and drab color palette works well atmospheric wise so I don't have any issues in that department.
I'd say this is definitely my type of anime and thus, I'm super hyped and looking forward to what comes next. All the questions raised throughout this entire episode are worth being questioned by everyone once in their lifetime. Such as the striking three questions of "who am I", "where do I come from", and "where will I go after I die". But also others, though more subtle. For example, the focus on number 7, which is seen as the number that symbolizes perfection, the statement that we're only free in our thoughts, the question if we're the same as we were yesterday and if we are only interpreting a mere character, and so on. I mean, seldom do I really get this hyped for such a promising anime lately and I'm just simply glad that there are still animes like this one, capable of catching my interest =)
Despite Asano having little more to do with this thing than Character design I can't help but notice some similarities between this show and his works. Like the contrast between existentialism and deep interpersonal drama and how those can both occupy the same space and be equally as important. The two mains are basically ennui and drama personified and I like their chemistry. The Sensei character was a little nicer and more interesting than I expected. Hehe his banter with Nishinosono was I'd say pretty well-written and actually adorable in a way.
Colors are a lot less saturated here as I expected from the trailers. Works well with the material but I get the feeling things might change visually as we go. We'll see. Also the whole "let's go to a weird island occupied by a genius scientist and find a dead body!" kinda thing screamed Scooby Doo to me I dunno it was a little funny. Still, this is the only Noitamina thing this year I haven't immediately dropped so that's a definite plus
