I'm currently watching FMAB but I'm seriously having a hard time grasping onto it.
What's the hype about it? Will it get better?
The early episodes butchered the fuck out of the manga because the show was made with the idea that people had already seen the 2003 show. I think it does get better though, but I don't think it is quite the masterpiece that some people think it is.
Totally agree with you on that. The first few episodes were out of place for me (I haven't watched 2003). The only thing stopping me from dropping the series all together was the fanbase. I decided to continue watching and I saw it improve up until the finale which I thought was cool. I gave it a 10/10 because it deeply connected with me, but it is in no way a masterpiece... tbh I don't think there is an anime that is flawless.
Thinking at least of the Brazilian scenario,
FMA was probably the best anime shown on public TV, meaning that many people were able to see it, so here it is usually placed on a pedestal and, at least until a few years ago, it was one of the few unamities within the community.
It is not difficult to understand this, since compared to Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya and Naruto, others famous for the same reason of wide audience, it really seems something perfect and super complex, well written and the like. Other than that, we had all the hype of a generation that watched 2003 knowing that the end was not that, and put all their hopes on FMAB. (This creates another problem for me, which is the deification of the opening Again, which is the worst of FMAB, although it is very good)
I DONT KNOW! All of my friends (including me) didnt like it that much.I cant understand why people hyping over it.
I think FMAB is great but not something to hype over
My hopes was PRETTY big when i started it and it was a disappointment.
I liked it,but because of the fans saying its the best made me hate it.
That's exactly how it felt for me. So highly spoken that I eventually did watch and was the biggest letdown I ever had in anime, not because it's bad, but it isn't that great either.
I blame mostly the fandom, I tend to avoid hype as I know it can easily ruin expectations but this one was hard to ignore after so long and well, ended that exact way.
I admit it has some good plot/world parts and characters but it also felt a lot like typical anime in the genre. Like at the end in such a "huge threat" only one "random" guy dies. Getting all they lost back with what's considered a "big trade" which hardly feel it is, it has some weight but not enough for what is traded/FULLY given back. it's too much of a "happy ending" for a story that develops the beginning in a more serious tone IMO.
My best guess would be : because so many people liked it very much.
Yeah but the reason that leads to that is that it's mostly an entrance anime and nostalgia is a strong thing. Same as it is happening nowadays with AoT, bringing a lot of new people, although I personally enjoy AoT a lot more.
Pretty much the same reason why One Piece is great for me, despite being trash at the same time, xD
(speaking about the anime only)
P.S. Just noticed this is 11months old xD
in my personal experience, everyone enjoys it. what i mean by that is: comedy fans, isekai fans, mecha fans, thriller fans, even non-anime fans enjoy it. it's really universal in that aspect.
also... it's just a good show. it has solidly written characters and an interesting enough plot to keep you entertained as it goes on. it's lighthearted but isn't afraid to suddenly get dark. people are also able to empathise with the two main characters since they seem so sweet and innocent in a world full of evil adults.
a lot of people also probably have fond memories of it from when they were younger. the original fullmetal alchemist tv show was one of the few anime to air on mainstream channels in the west.
I think that its rated anime of all time because of the messages in the anime, as well as the fights and in my opinion likeable characters. like how it talks about overthrowing a corrupt government, injustice of races and the issues that comes with war of course its not gonna appeal to everyone which is understandable, which is why i don't get why people bash others who don't rate it as high.
While I think HxH should have that spot, I'm currently watching it and totally understand why it has it. The comedy might not work for me half the time, but everything else is pretty stellar, pacing, animation, writing, characters. It doesn't feel contrived or like it's following typical 'arc' structures (are there even arcs in it? I don't know where they'd cut off), it's not too long to put people off like HxH, but not too short that you don't have plenty of time to get invested in the characters. It may be a shonen, but it feels distinctly more like a drama most of the time, with much more prominent dark and political themes than even HxH, which I think explores those themes fantastically as well, but in a more shonen-esque way.
