I found about Anilist when a friend of mine recommended it to me a long time ago, so now I joined this site recently and I've always used it to back up my lists from MAL. I really like the site and I often check the forums once a day :P
I was on AnimeSoul's Discord server and I checked a user's profile in general chat and saw an Anilist link, checked it out then decided to create an account after finding out what Anilist was because at the time I was writing all the anime I've watched on a notebook 😅
I found al before mal and I also created a mal account last year ^^

I joined because I saw that a YouTube anime reviewer I liked (Arkada) had an account and I decided to take a look at the site. I didn't know about MAL or Hummingbird, and had been keeping track of the anime I was watching and had watched in an old notebook. I really like the clean layout and such, so its really the only site I use.
Started at MAL, but I didn't like the bland look or the weird community.
Then I went to Hummingbird, partially because I was a Podtaku fan at the time. But now I'm not. Also the community was annoying and the Mods were lazy and equally annoying.
Then a good buddy of mine told me about Anilist, and I've loved it ever since. The layout looks good, and looks even better with 2.0 (despite some bugs). The Mod(s) seem to be on top of things and are very helpful (special thanks to @Josh. Cheers, dude!). The community is really friendly and engaging. I've loved every minute of being on Anilist, and I hope it can stay that way forever. ^_^
I tried Hummingbird (AKA Anime Twitter) as well, but I really didn't like it. Most of the folks there were rude and generally unpleasant to be around, but I encountered a couple nice people there, so it wasn't too bad. I could rant about some things about Hummingbird for on and on, but probably not today.
About the mods, you're definitely right on that part. The admin at Hummingbird is a big time a-hole.
Last year I was looking for upcoming anime (I forget what season) and I came across anichart; It looked very nice with its UI (way better than MAL, which I was debating on joining), and there was a banner promoting their new site Anilist.co.
It had a very nice layout (2.0 is even better), easy to use forum, a small community and I had been looking for a place to keep track of the anime I was watching/watched/wanted to watch.
So I decided to join & I am so glad I did :)
I found AniList through AniChart. I found AniChart when trying to find a comprehensible list of what's coming out in upcoming anime seasons. As for why I joined it, I used to take coding classes and I really liked the idea of being able to customize an anime list as well as being more organized with what I watch (because I watch too many things simultaneously). So, basically, it's super convenient!
To be honest I don't know how the fuck I even got to this website. But I liked being organized and keeping a log of the anime I watch so I was like fuck it, I'll create an account. (Plus, I was in the middle of my suspension from school and I literally had nothing bettter to do (but that's another story)
what happened?
I got suspended for 10 days because me and bunch of other delinquents got caught drinking alcohol while on a school trip to Spain. Well, we weren't caught in the act, our teachers found opened bottles of alcohol in our rooms at like 4 in the morning and one of our roommates fucked up and spilled almost everything and it was a whole ordeal. Good times though.
I had no other anime to watch, so I recently finished Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou and I wanted to see if there was a second season, so I looked it up and then there was a discussion here on Anilist. It intrigued me. I didn't come back after 3 months when I was even more bored after the Winter Vacation. Then I made an account and liked it here. Didn't care about MAL or Hummingbird. They look shit.
I was using MAL but it was giving me way too many issues - it got to the point where it just wouldn't let me log in, or if I managed to log in it would log me out again a few clicks later. I have no idea why.
A friend happened to mention this site and I was so keen to ditch MAL that I made an account. And here we are.
Now that I think about it.... i don't remember how I got here, 'cause I've been on hiatus on watching anime for 4 years, I was probably browsing on the internet trying to find some good animes and found this site, I haven't been keeping track of all the animes I watched so I thought it was about time I did then I registered to try it out then I stayed for the anime countdown XD, But then the site really looks good and the community is awesome too :3 then after like 3 months I found out about MAL and it was lame compared to anilist so I just stayed here ^_^
It was around the time I really started getting into anime, and someone posted a link to AniChart on the comments of the website I used to use to watch anime, and from that I eventually found AniList. I'd know of MAL, but it looked really dull so I never even considered joining, but AniList seemed fresh and functional, so I joined.
I saw that a friend of mine (@Strimmer) was using some sort of anime-site to keep track of his anime, and thought that I needed one of those for myself. I decided to Google around a bit, and was seconds away from signing up for MAL until I decided I didn't like the design (I also thought it looked different from what he was using). I asked Strimmer what website he was using, and he guided me towards this place.
