I see what you're saying, but I kinda disagree.
Let's say someone hated... idunno... pick an anime... oh, I know!
Keijo
Let's say someone saw that it's an "anime about butts", gave it a good old rage 1 "based on enjoyment", because they hate butts.
They didn't take into account the animation quality, sound design, music, voice acting, writing quality etc., etc.
I would say that yes, this opinion would be "misinformed and not a true reflection of X's quality".
Then there's pure "hype". And not based on own expectations and experiences, but, say "oooh, my favorite youtuber said that it's good, which means it's a 10/10 masterpiece and I don't need to think with my own head!"
You get what I'm saying. Some people do over/underrate things.
That said, anime ratings mean nothing and everyone should just love what they love.
Thanks for your thoughts!
I agree with your stance that people allow their biases and preconceptions to influence their enjoyment of a show. I also agree that a review by such a person will misrepresent the quality of said show. I can also get behind the idea that one's enjoyment should be guided (but not solely determined) by ratings.
However I didn't say that objective quality is accurately represented by popular opinion. My stance was that many people use their subjective experience of an anime to determine how others should experience it, and that those who experience it differently are somehow "wrong".
I think the differences in our arguments lies in whether or not you believe reviews and ratings should be objective (I believe that reviews should represent the average reviewer's subjective enjoyment).
Let me know if I have misunderstood what you were saying :)
