Should we waste our time doing badges?

badges totally sucks

i'm new to al but i think they seem like something fun to do on the side.
I wouldn't watch or read something solely for the reason of getting a badge though.

I think it's a fun way to expose myself to new anime. Naturally there are ones I'm not a fan of but I found some ones I really enjoy

badges provide a good way to experience new anime you would normally not watch. That's the sole purpose for their existence ?:D If you don't want to do them, then don't do them

You don't have to do the challenges, the point of them is to help people exit their comfort zone and be open to watching/reading things different to what they currently watch/read.

Badges are there so you can have some fun. If you aren't having fun then you should not be doing them. It's not for everyone and it should not feel like an obligation. Hell, even if you like some challenges, and not others, don't do the others.
I'm doing the MRC manga challenges and I don't really care about any of the others, being AWC or "participation badges" since it's not something I'm interested.
But MRC has led me to find new manga, or read stuff that had been on my planning for a while and it gave me the push to read it. But I'm the kind of person who will most likely try any kind of manga thrown my way.

It doesn't exist for MRC, thankfully, only for AWC, but I'd also would avoid monthly challenges, because they have a deadline and then it feels more like a chore. It took me almost a year to finish the MRC Begginer's Challenge and that's 100% okay with me, I don't want to rush it.

I do them because they force me to watch the anime I want to watch, but have been dragging my feet on. I don't really care much about the badges. I don't watch any anime that have shit scores (unless I know that they have shit scores for no good reason), or anime that I wouldn't be interested in for the life of me. That is a really good way to kill your enjoyment.

I just enjoy the search for the anime that fits the requirement and that I've also been wanting to watch.

These are the anime that I was curious about, but never would have started if they didn't fit a requirement:
BNA
Tsurezure Children
Princess Tutu
Inferno Cop
Kaiba
ReLife

These are ones that I didn't expect much out of, but they blew my expectations:

Baby Steps

And this is the one I dropped midway and chose to pick it up as part of the challenge, and ended up in love with it:
Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru

So what I want to say is that I use it to motivate myself to watch the anime that have caught my eye in one way or another. There have been some duds and stuff that is not precisely to my liking, but it's surprisingly been a nice ride for me.

You don't even know what you're criticising. It's challenges, not badges.

Soz if this sounds dumb but I didn't know there were badges in anilist also I joined anilist for fun and show people what anime and manga I watch also see what others watch and gets recommendations

I would prefer achievements for what you have watched and readed over badges as with other sites like MAL.

So, don't do them?

I like the idea of badges, they're fun and nice to have as achievements. But I wouldn't watch something just for a badge.

i like the categories badges (like drama, slice of life, etc.) bc i discover new things but i dont think ill ever do seasonal badges

For me, I like doing challenges because they are fun and they get me to watch anime that I've been holding back on watching for a while.

Yes.

Watch anime and those badge requirements will fill themselves over time. I can count on one hand the anime that I watched solely to close out a challenge and didn't enjoy at all, and I tend to pick short ones for that.

I mean...if you're not interested in certain anime...don't watch them just for a png (?)

Ive been WAITING for someone to say this!! Plus how do you even remember or keep track and i still dont even know how to submit my animes to get the badges(ᗒᗣᗕ)՞

I gave up on those challenges. I don't want to watch shows for hours for a small jpg.

Challenges makes watching anime/reading manga feel like a job or task imo. It's a lot better to just watch on my own pace
