I have been watching anime for about a year now and there have been a very few which i loved and considered a masterpiece. The animes that felt like that were code geass, attack on titan, etc
code geass: it is kinda like deathnote but better, it has the best ending in anime seeing the character interactions you will feel extremely connected to them, there are a lot of moments which you will cry for and brings chills.
attack on titan: it has a very interesting and creative plot. many people may call it overhyped or overrated, but they feel it that way because they may have only seen the first 2 seasons and dropped it, but those seasons are just a build up, you see it all coming together in the third season and you understand the hype. it has very lovable and amazing characters too.
DeathNote and Grave of The FireFlies
1.Why Deathnote ?
The compaction of 37 episodes with full of cliffhangers and both L and Light trying to outwit each other was so exhilarating and thrilling which really made me watch the whole series in a day and there were no other anime which can really make me hooked to it like how DN did.
2.Why Grave of The Fireflies
Studio Ghilbi, no doubts makes top notch movies but also keeps it simplistic and aesthetic. Grave of Fireflies had a very deep plot and the depiction of the tragedy was wonderful. I, myself cried like about 3 times throughout the movie and even while rewatching, it still feels touching.
Contains spoilers
I always saw the death of Setsuko (Sister) coming from the beginning and it was disheartening how she and her brother had to die due to suffering. The real thing that makes me more sadden is that this movie is just not a movie but someone out there actually did had to suffer this.
Hunter x Hunter 2011
and nothing else
it actually unites many genres, has the best power system of ever, has the greatest characters, is done masterfully by madhouse with insane animations and soundtracks, and does things completly different from other shonen except the normal shonen stuff.
FMAB comes close but it is in it self to plain and smooth in contrast
I recently started watching this show because it is supposed to be very good, but so far I'm extremely underwhelmed with it actually. Perhaps I'm too old for a show like this (I'm 23 years old). I'm 22 episodes in but all the main characters seem stupidly ignorant of all the dangers around them, they are always happy and when they are angry for once it is done over the top and cringy in my opinion. Perhaps it is because of my age, but from what i've seen from this show is that it is something 12 year olds would enjoy...
Now I know there are still A LOT of episodes to go but I wonder if it ever gets better?
Does it get better?
This anime has everything I love to see in fiction and is the one I would pick if I had to choose one show to explain why I love anime.
Introspection, philosophy, psychology, fantastic portrayal and understanding of human emotions and life in general, gorgeous visuals and music, and many other great things. watching this should be a priority for everyone.
here are some other series that would consider being must-see anime

Bakemonogatari
A Silent Voice
Gurren Lagann
Cowboy Bebop
Puella Magi Madoka Magica

KON

thanks for all the other anime!!!!!! omg so many suggestions
ive read the berserk manga (love it), im watching bakemonogatari atm, ive seen silent voice ( made me cry), stiens gate was really good too
thanks for the reccomendations!!
I've got 3, maybe 4 that I'd consider masterpieces.
FLCL
FLCL is probably my favorite show of all time, it's 6 episodes of absolutely off the walls shit. It takes a few rewatches to fully understand, but it rewards an authentic story about growing up, adulthood, what it means to be you.
Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei
The tatami galaxy is my favourite Yuasa work, though I admit I'm probably biased considering it was my first. It has an interesting episode structure, which I wont specify due to it being maybe a minor spoiler. The artstyle for this is amazing, as well as me liking the main characters and most of the side ones. The story isnt too complex but it really shows the variety of life, and appreciating the moment.
Serial Experiments Lain
Lain is a really weird show, but it covers a lot of interesting themes. The main thing that's really interesting is Lain's discussion on the blurring of reality and the internet, which is really amazing considering the show was made in 1998. There are several other amazing themes such as about identity.
Shinsekai yori
Shinsekai Yori, for me what mainly stood out was how well it manages to create a sense of unease throughout the entire show. This is contention on whether I think it's a masterpiece, but at the time I felt that the story was so enhanced by the tone it could generate. I don't have as much to say about it as the others, though.
One Punch Man (S1)- A show that I find actually executes the tropes/ideas it's parodying BETTER than any of the serious shows. The comedy was also great, and the animation was some of the best I've seen in a while as well.
Made In Abyss - For me the biggest sell here was the atmosphere. This one is more subjective, as the reason I put this show up there is because of how it made me feel. Very interesting world that doesn't pull its punches, and I REALLY wanted to know what happened next every episode.
One Piece.
Why? Because it has the best world-building out of any manga out there. Honestly, it has the best world-building out of any work of fiction ever, LOTR included. 1000+ named characters, a lot of them are still important and recurring, tons of mysteries even after 23+ years of publications, amazing power system ( devil fruits, Haki ), main character is not OP, "side" characters could very well be main characters themselves since they're written so well, incredible progression system ( islands, the Grand Line, Poneglyphs ) and "powerlevel" system ( bounty posters ).
The sheer scale of things makes it a masterpiece. And it pays off dividends the longer the story goes on. For example we recently got some flashback chapters where a certain character does certain things and visits certain islands, it's one of the best chapters ever written, because we ALREADY KNEW all the places he visited and characters he met ( which are characters either still important to the story, or important to some other important characters ). They were not created out of nowhere just to write a flashback.
The story of One Piece WILL go forward even without the main characters. And it's bound to be good when there are that many groups with conflicting ideals: The Marines, World Government and Gorosei, the 7 Warlords, the Revolutionary Army, the Four Emperors, the lurking legends and the Supernovas.
And one of the best things about it is that Oda ( the mangaka ) remembers little details written 20 years earlier, and draws them again, making the story flow so well. That man is honestly a God.
yeah! heard a lot of good stuff about it! im planning to read it after i complete berserk
nice, the manga is definitely the way to go, and maybe rewatch the best scenes on Youtube, cause even though the anime pacing kinda sucks, the best moments are usually done well.
Remember that it does start kinda slow but man, trust the hype, and you will see. You need time to build(?) the world after all.
made in abyss.
The main reason for me is the music. I'm super emotional and dramatic lmaoo but I never cry ACTUAL TEARS at an anime let alone only the music. But when I heard the soundtrack for made in abyss I nearly died dude, it's so beautiful and it's literally perfect for the anime. There's some amount of ambiguity in the whole OST and I feel like the story of made in abyss is basically the same, you can interpret it in so many different ways. The first season made me feel so weird, I don't even know if I felt sad or hopeful or whatever. ALSO. The world-building was actually perfect. Yeah hope this wasn't cringy to read I'm just still not over made in abyss
wow its that good?! i will watch made in abyss for sure! many people keep telling it is really good... i feel the same way with maquia:when the promised flowers bloom
its not cringey lol
YES it's so good, cause while I was watching it I was already impressed, but when it ended and I just sat back to think about what I just watched that's when I realized how deep the whole story is it's crazy. And YEs I loved maquia as well!! my sister recommended it to me a while back, it was really good

forgot to put it in, sorry (i'll edit it in the forum post) ...here:
code geass: it is kinda like deathnote but better, it has the best ending in anime seeing the character interactions you will feel extremely connected to them, there are a lot of moments which you will cry for and brings chills.
attack on titan: it has a very interesting and creative plot. many people may call it overhyped or overrated, but they feel it that way because they may have only seen the first 2 seasons and dropped it, but those seasons are just a build up, you see it all coming together in the third season and you understand the hype. it has very lovable and amazing characters too!
Thetwo I would call Masterpieces would be , well 3
Steins Gate
Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood
Sakurasou no Pet na Kanoujo
The first two managed to really tie in so many elements very well and told complete stories. The third isn't perfect , but for me it's an important anime to me during that time in life.
Since you have no reason why you consider your anime as a masterpiece, I won't have a reason as well.
Hagane no Renkinjutsushi Fullmetal Alchemist
Hunter x Hunter 2011
Shingeki no Kyojin and its succeeding seasons.
Sora yori mo Tooi Basho
Bakemonogatari and its succeeding seasons.
sorry, i'll edit it in.. but here:

@ANIMEsenpaikun69 My reason for FMAB and HxH11 as my masterpiece are similar: they are a one-of-a-kind shounen, very nice characters, and nice world-building. HxH11 is a bit better for me tho (mainly because of Chimera Ant, Phantom Troupe, and Election story arcs). For SnK, I admit the first season is great but not a masterpiece, but it gets better every season and I have high hopes for the Final Season. It also has the best OST of all my masterpiece. For Yorimoi, I love the relationship between the 4 girls and their journey to Antarctica. For Monogatari, it is my #1 favourite (but not my #1 top). I love the dialogue between characters and the visuals, also I like all characters except Nadeko.
Gintama
I don't even need to say more
I would say one anime I consider to be a masterpiece is Demon Slayer. It has great fights, so much emotion, and awesome animation. I've read the manga to the ending and the story just gets better and better and time goes on. Its usually the first anime I recommend to someone new to the genre.
While it might not be considered a masterpiece by some, my favorite anime would have to be My Hero Academia. Just like Demon Slayer, its got great fights, animation, and story. I personally consider it a great masterpiece.
ReZERO Starting Life in Another World
the reason i consider this a masterpiece is because of the emotions and actions you see the characters feel/take throughout the show. the emotional lows this show has truly make you feel like everything has hit rock bottom.
also episode 15 is the greatest 25 minutes of animation that ever will exist
Your Lie in April
Ngl, I does start off slow at first, but it's supposed to be like that. The music is beautiful alongside the visuals. And if I'm being honest, the main reason I consider it a masterpiece because it made me cry MAD HARD.
Tl;dr, Cowboy Bebop, a Ghibli film, Hellsing: Ultimate. TV series, feature film, OVA.
Personally, I'm a fan of the crime genre with emphasis on engaging dialogue and Tarantinesque cinematography, scoring, and direction; thus Cowboy Bebop is the magnum opus of all anime series. The jazz of Yoko Kanno and her Seatbelts cohort setting the pace for the insanity to come, the numerous references to other media (from westerns to wuxia), the late 1990's anime art style (which in my opinion represented the pinnacle of adult-oriented animation, we'll get to Studio Ghibli in a second), the sublime action and animation, the beautifully constructed characters, the way their backstories were implemented (none were neither original, nor innovative, BUT they were made their own through nigh perfect writing). It's the anime that launched a craze for corgi dogs as much as the Queen did; it's the anime that took jazz back to the masses; it's the anime that, just like Pulp Fiction, will forever stay with me. I've watched both art pieces dozens of times for the better part of the last two decades and I'll probably watch them both on my deathbed. Thank you Shinichiro Watanabe, thank you, Yoko Kanno, thank you all who worked on Cowboy Bebop!
Moving on to Studio Ghibli; it's hard to choose a favourite Ghibli film, for more than one reason. Their subject matters are varied and the creative geniuses behind the studio have differing views; plus... they're all so damn good! But... I feel that Isao Takahata edged over Hayao Miyazaki in qualitative factors. Miyazaki is the face, the architect, the success, and the reason why Ghibli exists. BUT! Isao Takahata is the only person to date to have brought me to tears with Grave of the Fireflies. Few art pieces did that to me and none like Hotaru no Haka did. And yet, it's not this film I'll talk about, first because it's been talked about enough, second because it isn't really a Ghibli movie. For instance, it's the only adapted Ghibli film to not be based a children's story, you have the fairy tale of Princess Kaguya, quintessential for Japan's history, and you have British and American teenage fantasy novels. Hotaru no Haka is a fictionalized part of Akiyuki Nosaka's life. Just like The Wind Rises by Hayao Miyazaki. So I won't be talking about that anymore... The masterpiece is... Pom Poko. Yes, the tanuki story, one of the least popular Ghibli films. It's filmed like a docu-drama, the characters are not giving us many lessons beside ecological danger, the artwork is standard for the studio... It seems like it should just be a good Ghibli movie and that's about it. And it is. I have no other reason to consider it a masterpiece, except for the fact that I love it; purely subjective love.
Finally the third masterpiece and probably the one that panders most to my misanthropic side; Hellsing Ultimate. Dracula is an inherent part of my culture, we adopted him with reluctance in our post-Revolutionary era, but we did for tourism's sake. But we didn't forget about the man, Vlad III Dracula, the word meaning "son of the dragon", namely Vlad Dracul (think of the at the end as an O' in Irish/Scottish names). He is a hero to us; his cruelty justified by heathen invaders and corrupt nobles. He's probably the most popular Medieval ruler here and we call upon his name, not God's, when praying for the punishment o
of corruption. Hellsing touches that darkness inside me, it feeds the anger at this society that denies us the pursuit of happiness; Alucard is truly the Harbinger of Insanity as Rip van Winkle called him. The characters are all insane to a degree, and it's justified considering their knowledge Alucard's existence. Just as Shinichiro Watanabe made great original characters out of derivative source, Kouta Hirano does it with Hellsing, and oh, it's perfect. Their deaths are violent, their lives are painful. And in comes the humour, the lysergic trips generated by the immense pain before death inflicted by bullets, fangs, claws, and cannon shells! (HARKONNEN!). Humans are small, yet Alucard loves them. Unless, they're Nazis... Yes, the Nazis, the most overused trope in post-War history. I am born in Romania, but am only part Romanian; my other side comes from death camp survivors; Nazis and Communists ruined my family on both sides, but they didn't manage to kill us all. Just like nobody can really kill Alucard. But these aren't real Nazis; not ideologically. They're warmongers, they want to see the world die, the humans that Alucard loves. And I can sympathize with them, too. Hellsing is a masterpiece just because it gave me these questions about nature and existence. Berserk did that as well, but to a different extent and from a different point of view, the only reason why it doesn't show on this list is because it's an almost perfect manga, but an vastly imperfect anime.
These are my choices, see you Space Cowboys!
It is a very calm anime that goes deep into emotion and I just love that.
Natsume Yuujinchou
I'll be back here in april 2021 to comment about Fumetsu no Anata E (:
this is just the stuff i've given a 9.8 or above since anilist bins that as a 10/10
FLCL <- extremely stupid, but also smart and beautiful
Neon Genesis Evangelion The End of Evangelion <- just a loaded deconstructive entropic fuck-fest
Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl <- beautiful drama romance, tight writing
Legend of the Galactic Heroes <- greatest narrative ever, so much clever storytelling
Neon Genesis Evangelion The End of Evangelion amazing ending, ost, animation, characters, my favorite film/movie ever. amazing conclusion to an amazing series, extremely high enjoyment (ive rewatched 11 times)
Monster No other series has immersed me as much of Monster, i loved every aspect about this anime and its flawless except for possible pacing issues but those didnt bother me nor did i notice them while watching.
Rose of Versailles Great drama, romance, multi-dimensional characters showing multiple sides to situations, plot that reflects actual history, very good animation for its time and great directing. I also binged it all in 2 days because it was so interesting.
Cowboy Bebop Great direction, favorite ost of all time, my fav cast in anime, amazing
Maison Ikkoku I loved the comedy, character interactions, and development for characters and relationships throughout the series. Extremely satisfying ending, and i cried 7 times in total.
Serial Experiments Lain
Tokyo Godfathers
GTO Great Teacher Onizuka
Beck Mongolian Chop Squad
Perfect Blue
i dont feel like writing more so imma just leave the rest here and maybe write those in the morning.
One Piece it is an awesome journey and truly deserving of a masterpiece i love one piece and it really is a once in a lifetime adventure because of all the amazing characters and story arcs i love all the straw hats and also love that their always together as a family. I love the fact that they don't give up and never settle if they want something and that there always there for each other especially zoro for luffy.
I would have been more descriptive but i didn't have that much time.
