Okay, this week's episode wasn't dark, but I'm still gonna assume that the next few are gonna be dark. ( I still like the anime)

The author of this story should lose his/her job.
I know you’re not familiar with the source material (well I assume you’re not) but can I just say this story was from the first volume of the light novel. Before it was picked up by a publisher, it was first self-published on the Kindle store. When Jougi Shiraishi (the author) had written the first volume, he was just an amateur writer.
I think it’s a bit harsh wanting him to lose his job. His writing does improve in the second volume of the light novel...
If you think everything that happens in a story should lead somewhere, you surely know nothing about narrative.
Every story in a show should serve a purpose, whether that be developing the main character or through uncovering more about the plot or world. If they don't then should I waste 20 minutes on watching it? I can forgive one uneventful episode but having 3 episodes with no real plot resolution, no character development and barely any meaningful information about the world or its systems is something that's really hard to sit through.
Also, every story should do something, the best writers can make even seemingly mundane stories into ways to develop the plot, world and characters.
To be honest, the narrative quality and especially character design are in such stark contrast to the technical quality (animation, voice actors etc), that it feels really off. I know some people like this because it's pretending to be deep about not infering with misfortune and just moving one, but even then you would expect at least the slightest bit of moral struggle - which this main character does not have at all. You can't really shake the feeling that you are watching a complete psychopath. Which poses a good question - what do other characters see in her? Her technical ability is one thing, but as a person, I can't see how anyone would like to come close to her.. In particular the scenes with her teacher feel really weird, not just because in the long time they spend together, the teacher apparently did not even bother to ask what Eilana's motivation to study magic was, but also because again you can't help but ask, what positive qualities is the teacher seeing in Elaina, whose emotional distance is quite frankly the most scary thing in this anime?
I thought this episode was better than the last two. We got some insight to what our narrative character was thinking, feeling, and reacting too. Seeing how she interacts with her former prof as an equal and teaching magic was nice. it was a nice bit of character building and world building. I would like to see more world building, a deeper exploration into what makes her tick, and how she gets the means to travel, but we've got 7 more episodes. So I'm hopeful!
