Hi!
Does anyone have a recommendation for an Anime or Manga that has continuous self-harm, suicidal thoughts, and struggles?
I’ve seen some, but those were not really, maybe someone has some good ones.
Thanks!
first of all: u good bro? the way this post is written with a title like that doesn't sit well with me...
second of all:
the topic is there but it's treated in a very mature way. this is one of my favourite manga because of how each character's own struggles are portrayed and are eventually solved in the end.
don't read the other "menhera" comic though, that one is terrible and infuriating for me to read
Well, actually, I think I might, but...
Are you ok?
Yes yes! I’m alright! I just used a not so good title lol. I’ve changed it tho
Well, alright...
These are manga recs with characters with depression and/or suicidal thoughts, don't really think they have self-harm in it or anything from what I remember:
Ningen Shikkaku
I'm only six chapters into this one, bought it yesterday, actually, but it fits the bill so far. It's an adaptation of a novel by the same name from a writer who killed himself a month after finishing it, and supposedly this story is partially (or fully) auto-biographical.
Oyasumi Punpun
Obvious pick, Inio Asano is really good at writting melancholic things. Punpun is his darkest manga yet. It's a story about a boy dealing with depression from his childhood years to his early twenties. It's not really full of suicidal thoughts and stuff like that, but it's present, and again, it's all about struggling with depression.
NHK ni Youkoso
It's been... more than a decade since I last read this one, so memories are extremely fuzzy, but I remember it being about depression and having sucidal thoughts.
Jisatsu Circle
Horror manga about a suicide cult. It counts(?)
Jumyou wo Kaitotte Moratta Ichinen ni Tsuki Ichimanen de
The story about a guy who sells all his life span except three days... basically suicide.
EITHER WAY
I ask of you that you dont read all of these back to back to back. Splice them with other manga.
I'm rec'ing you these becuase sometimes when we are in a dark place, a dark work can help us cope, but don't just surround yourself with negativety.
If you're feeling down, I'm sure there's people around you, here, or somewhere that will be up to hear you out and try to help you.
Asper Kanojo
Jisatsutou
Mada Ikiteru
My Broken Mariko
Yomawari Sensei
kinda strange after seeing these, just how little self-harming there is in manga, in comparison to suicide and abuse.
The thread "anime depicting depression, suicide, self-harm, ...?" and it's comments have been merged into this thread.

As the title suggests, I was curious if anyone had any good anime suggestions that deal with topics related to mental health – like depression, suicide, and/or self-harm? I feel like these types of topics may not be represented in anime too often, besides them being mentioned/depicted as minor details of a plot. Some examples that come to mind are the Garden of sinners Chapter 1: Thanatos. (Overlooking View) and Serial Experiments Lain.
((edit)) I've also seen Neon Genesis Evangelion and given ! These are also good examples that I was reminded of.
thanks! ~
Mahou Shoujo Site
I personally think it's very good but many others don't like it and call it edgy. It certainly isn't for everyone but you can try it if you want to
The Fruit of Grisaia
Even though I personally don't like this one, has things you're looking for
ReZERO Starting Life in Another World
Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai
A couple of these might be a bit of a stretch but should have at least a taste of what you're looking for
