For me personally, I think Sangatsu no Lion, Initial D and the monogatari series are THEE definition of masterpiece :)
monogatari for anime and kingdom the manga for me
i like one piece more than monogatari but it has a few problems but the high points are the best
Genuine question: What is so great about Monogatari? I’m on episode 3 of Bake (that’s where you start right?) and it seems kind of slow. I know that it’s more of a character-driven show that a story-driven one, and that the witty dialogue is a staple of the show, but when does the plot start to pick up, and is it worth it?
@jherrera1021
i just finished kizu after bake and i am seriously going to finish the whole series, kizu is much more different from bake, cuz it explains things happening in it, but actual plot will start to pick up in bakemonogatari just in the blink of an eye, just watch some more, you won't regret it
The Monogatari series isn't for everyone. The reason everyone loves it seems to be because of how in-depth the characters are, the subtle foreshadowing and symbolism, and really just the plot in general. The dialogue is actually insane and as said on the Trash Taste podcast, it makes the Japanese of Japanese people sound stupid (what with the constant wordplay that even occurs in the titles), so really once you get past the rather slow pacing it's really enjoyable. I guess there's also the fact that it combines the aspects of a lot of genres, seeing as it's both a harem, supernatural, and psychological. Another thing to add is that the OST absolutely SLAPS and even if you don't enjoy the show you're bound to enjoy at least a few of the OPs.
In short, to answer your question the plot picks up in the later arcs of Bakemonogatari and it comes and goes throughout the series. For example, the Kizumonogatari movies are significantly more action-packed than Bakemonogatari, and also more about character backstory than working on the plot. Nisemonogatari is the complete opposite however, where there's much less action but significant plot development. It definitely picks up after episode 3, however, seeing as those first two arcs are possibly the slowest arcs in the series. As for your question of if it's worth it? Really that's up to you. If you don't enjoy or are at least interested in it after Bakemonogatari, I don't think even Kizumonogatari could hook you.
I'll watch this one, I've heard it's good and sad.
Personally I don't get the hype for Violet Evergarden. It didn't really do anything that caught my attention or stood out from other shows. It is good but that is all it does.
What made it a masterpiece was that it managed to make me care about characters within a single episode. Two hour movies can fail to make you care about a character but Violet did it in a single episode over and over again. It was unlike anything I've seen before.
Violet Evergarden is probably the most beautiful piece of media I've seen, both visually and thematically
It's a shame though that they undid basically everything the show tried to build up with the new movie having a certain character return from the "dead". Not sure how that can be seen as being amazing.
What made it a masterpiece was that it managed to make me care about characters within a single episode.
You can't really call something a(n objective) masterpiece because it made you care for characters. For example, I couldn't care less for any of the characters. Found them extremely boring, two-dimensional and fake. Now does this mean Violet Evergarden is not a masterpiece? I don't think so, I don't think this should be taken into account in the first place. Or at least not to this extent.
I can call something a masterpiece because it made me care for the characters. You might not be able to agree with it because it's someone else's thoughts on it but I still see it as a masterpiece. You'll have an impossible time finding an anime that is "objectively" a masterpiece.
There are a number of other factors that built up to Violet being a masterpiece but that was the most important one to me.
i think the problem here is that you're trying too hard to compare it to other pieces of work instead of acknowledging the story, characters, and visuals for itself.
if you'd like to compare it though, it's definitely more unique than a bully falling in love with the victim (a silent voice) or an anti-social guy falling for a popular girl (i want to eat your pancreas).
to touch upon what covaxe said, in just the 24 minutes, it makes you genuinely feel for characters, more specifically, ones that are there for that one or even two episodes only.
the character progression is also a lot more realistic which is great. the pacing, fantastic. the visuals, astonishing...
yes, while there's very little that overtly stands out, violet evergarden truly seems to perfect everything it does have. which is personally why i'd call it a masterpiece.
Honestly I cared more for the characters in the two films you mentioned than I did for Violet Evergarden. The thing that kept me going through the show was the hope of seeing Violet use her metal arms in some combat which thankfully we got that somewhat.
which says something about you personally and not really about violet evergarden.
considering episode 10 alone was enough to make people cry whilst on the other hand, the most upvoted review of i want to eat your pancreas says that it wasn't even enough to make them do just that..
different strokes for different folks though, i suppose.
The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya
Clannad After Story
Fatestay night Heavens Feel III spring song
Wait, you watched spring song?!?! You're one lucky bastard... Ohh and I've heard that clannad and suzumiya are very good anime so I'm gonna have to watch both of them
Ohh and i have a question, is suzumiya haruhi (2006) the same as the one from 2009?
yeah i watched spring song yesterday in cinemas, god it was incredible
also yeah, haruhi (2009) is technically season 2 to haruhi, but all the anime streaming websites have a few episodes of s2 play in the middle of the anime, and the final few episodes altogether are of season 1. it's a little hard to explain but it's like this because when haruhi originally aired in 2006 it aired all of it's episodes out of order so watching it chronologically like how all of the anime streaming sites have it is a lot easier
also yes clannad after story and the dissapearance of haruhi are absolutely incredible, must watch imo
Personally, I think that people usually look at the concept of "masterpiece" in the wrong way. Most people seem to use it comparative to all anime, but I personally think that each genre has its own masterpieces. For instance, most people wouldn't consider an ecchi anime to a masterpiece, but a certain ecchi anime could very well be a masterpiece of its own genre. For example, I consider Strike Witches to be a masterpiece because I went into it hoping to watch a show about pants-less lesbians fighting aliens and I got exactly what I was looking for and more. To answer your question, here are a few anime that I personally consider to be masterpieces of the slice of life genre, which is my favorite genre of anime.
KON
Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka
LuckyStar
Non Non Biyori
Yuru Yuri
I love all of these so much. The first one is a masterpiece, literally,
Modao Zushi
Bungou Stray Dogs
Jibaku Shounen Hanakokun
No Game No Life
I have not watched the first one but I am interested in it but there is just one problem... IT'S A CHINESE ANINE!!! like, there's nothing wrong with that but the voices sound sooo weird...
I've seen the first 2 seasons of GSD but I've not watched the 3rd ohh and toilet bound hanako-kun is really good but in my opinion, i wouldn't say its a masterpiece, but my opinion doesn't matter in this thread bc after all, this thread is about the anime that YOU consider to be a masterpiece so yeah... Ohh and I have not seen NGNL, but i do intend on watching it someday.
I understand the chinese voice problem but i didnt care about the voices at all, it was my first donghua and thats what got me into donhuas. For me it was all about the animation and the relationship of 2 main characters.
Also for donghuas
I think it would be weird if they were voiced by japanese people because the art style doesnt seem like it would be made in japan. I tried thinking how they would sound if they were japanese voice actors but i though it didnt sound right at all so i think the chinese voices match way better than i think it would if it was voiced by japanese people
Both of these easily
One Piece
Gintama (as a whole, not just season 1)
highly recommend if the number of episodes doesnt scare u
