lookin for some queer/BL recs!

hi there! im a queer guy just getting into anime and wowowow i love it! ive been watching a lot of magical girl stuff because that is what got me into it, but im curious if there are any good anime with gay romance/representation/themes. obviously, queerness does not dictate how good a show is, but I just love queer representation and themes so i figured id give this a shot! thanks in advance <3

  banana fish is the one of the best anime i've seen with such a beautiful relationship develop throughout the plot, but I definitely have to warn you to protect your heart bc the original commenter is 10000% correct about it being veeeerrryyyy sad. I still strongly recommend it though !

am straight male

Banana Fish

manages to find a middle ground where straight and gay people are able to enjoy it, although people of any gender or sexual orientation will be disturbed by a lot of its scenes, so it's not for the faint of heat

  I wouldn't go that far. The author seems to have got in hot water with party officials so what started as a fun if ambiguous slice of life budding yuri romance has turned into a stagnated mess of stalled progression.

  Oh yeah I was enjoying it. I ended up dropping it around chapter 190 because it had just devolved into gags. Does it get better?

  Not at all. There's no real story anymore and the last chapter we got was 4 weeks ago after about 7-8ish months so you won't get anything from picking it back up.

Really sad, not 100% romance focused but damn it was good. Be warned before watching as it has some pretty dark themes.
Adachi and Shimamura
Just a lesbian anime I've been watching, it's still releasing and I love it!
DARLING in the FRANXX
Not focused on romance, but it does have a gay character.

Honorable mentions are Yuri on Ice (personally I really dislike it as it kind of fetishes gay men) and Attack on Titan (has a gay couple later in the series but it's just an overall good show)

Hello! Most of these have already been recommended, but I second them as recommendations and will throw in my two cents as a fellow queer male.

Bloom Into You
Probably my favorite LGBTQIA+ show. Amazingly flawed characters and complicated relationships. There's also a really well-written ace/aro character in this. The anime currently only covers half of the manga, which you should read if you like the show, because it is an incredible story.

Revolutionary Girl Utena
An absolute classic, which you should definitely watch since you like mahou shoujo. This one is a bit of a psychological mindfuck in the best way, and you'll never stop thinking about it once you finish it.

Wandering Son
A tender look at two different trans characters in their youth, with lots of exploration of gender & sexual identity.

Sweet Blue Flowers
This never got finished, so the anime leaves off a bit inconclusively, but it's a delightful slice of life that I thoroughly enjoyed despite its flaws.

This one I haven't actually seen because I'm waiting to watch it with someone, but I've heard exclusively good things.

Personally, I would stay away from Sound Euphonium if you're looking for queer storylines. It's a pretty good show, but it's full of frustrating queerbait.
