I know this genre is sort of loosely defined, but some examples of ones I like are Welcome to the NHK, Ping Pong, Death Parade, Death Note, Paranoia Agent. Also pls no Evangelion its on my watch list already I'm just procrastinating watching it.
Thanks this looks really good :)
You should definitely watch Monster, also Pyscho-Pass and Death Parade are good, but I think Monster is the best.
I really liked death parade, ill definitely get on monster it looks great and I've heard its on par with/better than death note
Its hard to compare Monster and Death Note ,I gave Monster a higher score even though I consider Death Note my number one favorite but I definitely think you will like Monster if you liked Death Note! I think the villain in Monster is the best villain of all time.
I'm sure ill love it!! johan right? i've heard a little about him he sounds very interesting and scary
Haven't seen so much animes of this genre but I like a lot Akame ga Kill and it appears as Psychological so I think it fits Lol. Also, I know that Monogatari series is a well known saga of this genre. I've seen the first season of the series and was pretty strange but cool.
Thanks for the recommendations, sounds good. I've been putting off the monogatari series since I heard it has some pedophilic aspects which I hate but it looks really good aside from that and my friend loved it so I think I'll watch it soon
it does have a little bit but it's pretty easy to overlook, it doesnt happen really often and the incredible writing and everything else more than makes up for it
Yeah as long as it's not to like a Made in Abyss degree of pedo shit it shouldn't affect my enjoyment of the show too much, so I'm definitely gonna get to it
actually, if you think made in abyss is pedo then yeah monogatari isnt much better, unlike made in abyss, monogatari actually sexualises the minors, but as i said before, for both series theyre so minor and doesn't happen much, although there's more of it in monogatari then there is in made in abyss
even with that, both monogatari and made in abyss are some of my favourite series and it's not worth letting it bring down the show, considering it's only a minuscular element of both
oh yikes, yea i guess i j have a different scale of what i consider minor/major, i just noticed while rewatching made in abyss that there was a lot of kink stuff he put in but obviously blatant sexualization is worse. at the same time I've heard great things abt monogatari so i don't think I'll take it off my list just yet
Blue Literature Series
PSYCHOPASS
Perfect Blue
Ergo Proxy
Monster
ReZERO Starting Life in Another World
Terror in Resonance
SteinsGate
Higurashi When They Cry GOU
thank youu for all the recommendations i haven't heard of a lot before, I forgot to mention I love terror in resonance too.
Keep in mind if you decide to start watching higurashi that you need to watch these 2 first
When They Cry
When They Cry Kai
Gou is a sequel to these, some people will try to tell you otherwise but everyone who has watched these 2 original seasons knows its a sequel
thank youu, i've been putting this one off cause I heard it was really slow-paced and my attention span is horrible but i love the opening song lol so I'm gonna get into it
Thought the opening song exists technically, it doesn't really serve that purpose for majority of the series. It's better to just consider it as just another song in the OST.
And though it's quite slowly-paced indeed, it did pick up it's pace every now and again to keep me engaged whenever I was about to give up on it.
Hope you give it a try, eventually.
you gotta try tatami galaxy!
The Tatami Galaxy
The Promised Neverland
I would list more series but they've already been recommended! Since you like Yuasa's work, I think you will like Kaiba and Mind Game. I strongly second the Serial Experiments Lain recommendation as well. :) Psycho-Pass and Steins;Gate are also good previous recs, but they're more traditionally psychological, whereas the others are psychological in more abstract and metaphorical ways.
Just finished kaiba, thank you so much for the recommendation it was incredible beyond words! It was way more confusing than what i expected from the art style so i had to reread a lot of old rewatch discussions lol but i was blown away and it is now on my favorites list, so thank you very much :))
Yo, you're very welcome! I'm so glad you loved Kaiba! I agree with you that it can be very confusing on the first watch, so I'm glad you liked it enough to dig deeper. Imo, Yuasa's works get better after revisiting them at least once. I'm actually planning on rewatching Kaiba with some friends for that reason!
Anyways, I'm happy I helped you discover a new favorite series! :)
thank youu i've actually only heard of one you have unique recommendations i appreciate it
I like a lot of off-beat series. XD You could also add these to the list, come to think:
Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro
Gosick
Dantalian no Shoka
Nijuu Mensou no Musume
Shion no Ou
They apparently aren't tagged as psychological, but they count. ovo I especially recommend GOSICK, Shion no Ou, and Nijuu Mensou no Musume. <3 Neuro is written by the same person who did Assassination Classroom.
Texhnolyze
psychological to an extent, a lot of characters have arcs centered around the pain of having a body. it's very upfront about pain and trauma so definitely proceed with caution - also, i havent finished it yet so it's a recommendation i'm less sure about but a person that i trust enjoyed it so i think its safe. it's by the same person who did serial experiments lain iirc
Revolutionary Girl Utena
a very good deconstruction of the shojou genre. has a lot to say about how strong bonds between women (romantic or platonic) are key in destroying the heteropatriarchy and about how abusive and oppressive systems can't be taken down while following the system's rules. has a lot of heavy themes (abuse, incest, rape, compulsory heterosexuality, manipulation), though they're handled gracefully. do tread with caution though. i saw you say that suicide is a problem for you - there is a scene with a suicide attempt. if you need a list of content warnings episode by episode i can link you to one just lmk, if it doesn't seem like too much for you i really recommend a watch this show changed my life
Sarazanmai
it's worse than rgu for sure, but it's another one by ikuhara. i enjoyed what sarazanmai had to say about forming bonds with others under late-stage capitalism, the effects of the System on people, etc... but i have to give you a billion disclaimers because ikuhara is unfortunately Like That Sometimes so here we go: there are a lot of unfortunate scenes involving butt and/or sexual stuff about minors. like, to go into more detail, there's a whole plot thread where for some reason your soul is in your ass and idk a frog had to eat the mcs to turn them into kappa. whatever it is it's bad. good god. like the frog shits out a person in episode one, right off the bat. that's the biggest thing that sucks about sarazanmai and iirc episode 1 is the worst of it but if you can handle that - as well as emotional abuse, though if you've seen stars align you can probably handle that - then the rest of it is good. plus, positive lgbt+ rep and a disabled character that is actually pretty chill about his disability which is always nice to see
i'll also second the recommendations of
Serial Experiments Lain Kaiji Ultimate Survivor Akira The Tatami Galaxy
and warn you of what i think was a brief suicide scene in lain and some Boobs. Like a lot of boobs. in the tatami galaxy. though that's probably ok lmao
i need to rewatch lain bc i was kind of dozing off while watching parts of it and that's not great for an anime where you really need to pay attention lol, but from what i remember about it it was interesting. kaiji i havent personally watched, but i know it has a lot to say about class and capitalism and the person who i heard about it from is the same trusted person who recommended texhnolyze to me so its also on my list. akira is an absolute classic and a GORGEOUS movie (seriously. the animation goes so hard) though the movie can be a bit hard to understand on first watch so maybe also check out the manga - it goes into much more depth. the tatami galaxy's animation is phenomenal and i enjoyed the concept. they also talk very fast which made my brain happy.
i'm going to discourage watching this one, though.
FLCL
the main character is a grade schooler and has a lot of sexually charged interactions with people much older than him and it's not portrayed as a bad thing. to put it in the words of a friend- "it's a preteen male fantasy that's not appropriate for adults to be the one writing."
hope you can find something you like :)
This Texhnolyze
worth your time, very bleak and nihilistic in nature
Also you Blue Literature Series
havent watched this.. but has no longer human it so I guess it'll be worth your time.
thank you so much!! and thank you for the content warnings too they all sound so good I've been looking for some anime with some leftist themes too. sarazanmai sounds.. funky.. but interesting I'll check it out. I'm thinking of reading the akira manga since i did watch the movie and LOVED the animation but wasn't a big fan of the plot so i wanna give it another try. if you know what episode the suicide attempt was on in revolutionary girl utena, could you let me know? its fine if you don't but it helps me a lot to not freak out if ik when its coming. thanks again for the recommendations I'll check them out soon :))
episode 37 of rgu has the suicide attempt, there are brief flashbacks to it in episode 38. the character in question attempts to jump off a building. this tw guide goes episode by episode and was very helpful to me when i was watching it - https://vilecrocodile.tumblr.com/post/178113936017/revolutionary-girl-utena-complete-triggers-guide
also, if you're looking for more anime with leftist themes, might i suggest:
Princess Mononoke No6
both are very environmentalist and humanist. princess mononoke is my favorite movie of all time and has one of the most complex anime antagonists i've ever seen. it's a conflict between people and nature and learning how to live in a balance, and about maintaining hope for tomorrow even when the world as you know it is crumbling around you. as for no.6 - the dialogue can be a bit awkward at times but i thoroughly enjoyed what it had to say. stars a city with a very oppressive government that surveilles its citizens' every move and maintains its false image of utopia by doing some shady things behind the scenes, often involving the oppression of groups of people. the main characters learn from each other - also, they're gay and in love but not in the gross fetishized way that anime often writes gay men. i do recommend checking out the manga though, the anime rushed the ending and the manga's a lot more fulfilling.
pls i'm definitely not gonna watch any age gap type stuff sry but i am gonna check out SEL
That is the “psychological” part of it, isn't it?
In most of what I listed, the protagonists are sociopaths — an “age gap” romance would be one of the lesser offences that Satou committed. Satou is a serial killer who has murdered and tortured many to keep them from finding out that he keeps a small child locked up in his home as his lover.
Are you talking about happy sugar life, I've seen it. isn't she a girl? And it's also just not that good. It was mostly just plain disgusting without much good character writing outside of that. And i don't think you need pedophilia horror to qualify a 'psychological show', no, most of what I've seen has been without it and has been pulled off well. I think the way she groomed, abducted, and psychologically scarred the little girl in happy sugar life was one of her most major offenses, what the little girl said at the end of the show to her brother (?) about how she was gonna live her life from that point on showed that. I hate stuff with major pedophilia and unless a show has other aspects good enough to make up for it, i wont like/watch it
Utsu Musume Sayuri
It's in the psychological genre
