What do you think about this episode?
One of the worst I've seen in years. Unlikable characters, thrashy message. Not going to bother with it anymore.
Can you really say that something has unlikable characters after only one episode? Isn't the whole point of a first episode to present how flawed the characters are so that you can watch how they can develop throughout the story?
thats quite spot on, but jaku-chara not only presents the flaws of fumiya, but it wants you to sympathize with his flawed arguements and really see where hes coming from (what with the dramatic lighting and all, and all the depressing shots and the (lack of) emotion in his voice. also phrases like ' im moved' and stuff) and thats where i think it loses some of its redeeming quality.
Garbage/10
Pathetic & shallow MC. Considers himself a "loser" due to not fitting in.. as if people who don't care about status and appearance are gonna judge themselves by their status and appearance..
"My hair is such a mess! I'm such a loser, I feel horrible! If only I cared enough to wash my hair!"
You see the retarded contradiction here?
And that female main.. Need I even say anything about her? I'm guessing she starts to like him in the end and becomes less quick to judge people based on appearances. And then, for the finale, MC steals the girl from the guy whose personality amounts to 'angry & popular'.. oh and he's blonde too, so it's like he's winning against the gaijin!
And, of course, they had to add that this bitch has a "traditional Japanese" appearance..
What a pathetic, shallow, nationalistic piece of shit of an anime. All the socially retarded Japanese teenage guys are just gonna become even more xenophobic, and the gaijin are gonna think "hmm, why do 50%+ of anime now have a pathetic MC? Who would such a pathetic person be relatable to? Oh, I know! Isn't all anime intended exclusively for the Japanese audience? That's who it's meant to be relatable for!"
I think the foundations of the show are strong enough to have the POTENTIAL to be a decent show. I just fear that the very apparent flaws such as the somewhat unlikeable characters and the overuse of "gamer terms" comes to the detriment of the show. I'll be sticking around for the next episode to see how it unfolds.
Im not going to comment on the episode itself since I haven't watched it and it seems from the comments below that its actually not related to the thing I'm about to say.
Looking at your life in a game sense is actually helpful to those who lose themselves in escapism, make them escape into the real world, helps them actually care, though from the comments it seems like thats not how this is applied.
I thought Aoi was being too harsh berating Fumiya's appearance until they zoomed in on his pants/sneakers. Then I lost it and laughed pretty hard.
I like the chemistry between the main characters, I like that a Fumiya is actively seeking to change, and I like that Aoi seems to approach her teaching him with a firm but still jovial attitude.
Is it weird for me to use these discussion posts years after the season finished? Probably-
Overall, I enjoyed this first episode!! I watched it in dub, and oh lawd this show can be cringey af- but I do feel like that should be expected in a way, and that it's also intentional! I mean, this show is about an antisocial gamer who has no idea how to socialize, of course he's gonna sound strange and cringey!! I also liked the clash of ideals between our two main leads and am a fan of where the story seems to be heading!! Solid 7/10 episode :)
