Kazuya from Rent-A-Girlfriend
Glad this is the most liked answer, the guy just stays the same even after 150+ chapters of the manga. No development or where it seems like there is development he returns to being the same. Mostly a problem with the writing of the author.
I still read the manga because it is somewhat entertaining and still waiting the return of Mami.
Jonathan Joestar. Here's something I wrote before about it.
Lets get the disclaimer out of the way, I know JoJo is a very well liked series and I know Jonathan is therefore a character a lot of people will like. If you do, I'm not trying to make you dislike him or the series, be you, you're cool.
But I can't, I can't like Part 1 and I can't like Jonathan both of them help each other in that "suckiness", if the problems of Part 1 help Jonathan be a worse character than he would in better hands, the fact that the main character is bad makes Part 1 feel worse than it would with a better main character.
So, I'm going to actually start with the manga and what problems it brings to the table, because Jonathan is definitely not the only bad character in Phantom Blood, actually, I'd argue that almost every character is bad. The manga art doesn't help, we're all used to hear that Araki is a fantastic manga artist, well, he wasn't in 1986. While he pulls a nice badass panel here and there, most of the manga is pretty ugly, so our character... is ugly. Then the dialogues are God damn horrible. This is a thing of some old manga, Devilman has it, Saint Seiya has it... Dialogues that are legitimately the worst thing ever. They suck the immersion out of it, it doesn't feel like normal characters are speaking and this helps to make every character, including your MC, feel more clunky, more annoying, less real.
Then Jonathan is a nice guy character, and look, I could write an entire secondary rant about how I LIKE your traditional nice guy character in battle shounen. People who complain about every single Shounen MC being just a nice guy without complex character conflicts and grey morals, I don't think they realize that these characters are not supposed to be like that, they're supposed to be role models. When you watched Dragon Ball as a kid, you cared about Goku not being "deep" or did you just enjoyed it and wanted to be like him?
With that said, most characters are also fun to watch. Jonathan is written to be the embodiment of "Good" and this is on purpose, because as we know, his rival, DIO, is written to be the embodiment of "Evil", he killed a dog after all, and who kills dogs if not Satan himself.. and my girlfriend, she's a vet and sometimes euthanasia is the only way to go. Sorry.
But that's all that Jonathan is, he's a gentleman, a nice gentleman, who respects everything and that's all. He is genuinely everything that people complain about the "nice guy" characters and nothing else. He's a one dimentional character in which his one dimension is not even that interesting.
God I hate him.
And the worst part is that every other Jojo that came afterwards... is actually nice. Like, I don't love the Jojo cast, but there's a lot of good characters, a lot of them introduced right in Part 2, so I don't know what happened in part 1, but it sucks that it is like that. Jojo could have been easier to get into if that wasn't the case.
I agree with what that person said, Araki was just starting out, I cant believe this manga was made a few years after my parents were born, it makes sense it wasnt all good, and none of the characters are good or memorable beside Dio, speewagon, and ofc jojo, AND ZEPPELI.
Yes, and no. Araki starting out is an excuse, he was just a rookie, but there are rookies who do good manga. And while I admit most manga I read from the 70s and 80s do have a lot of the problems I had with Jojo, Akira was from 1982 and Ashita no Joe is from 1969 and both excell in various fields that Jojo does not.
Also, your parents were born before 1986 and that fucks me up very hard.
Why does that fuck u up very hard haha, also thats SOME rookies im pretty sure not everybody does good starting out lol, and I have never heard of Ashita No Joe
Actually, nevermind, I was thinking they were born after 1986. Because my parents are from the late 60s, so that's a huge difference to me, lol.
And true, not all rookies are great at the start. Tho we should also be aware that Jojo was not Araki's first series.
About Ashita no Joe, or Tomorrow's Joe, if you get into older anime, or maybe more into sports anime you'll start to hear more about it. It's pretty famous and considered one of the most important Sports manga ever. And once you watch it you're going to notice that a lot of anime and manga reference it.
Bam from Tower of God
This dude is just a person who does really nothing interesting and he's only simping for Rachel which is what I hate more because she's a b*tch. So long he hasn't done anything impressive I don't like him
emiya shirou
why
He was the worst part about ubw for me, he's unbelievably naive and boring. Any other character was better written. Also, his talk about justice and not being right was so annoying I just wanted him to shut up the entire time. I don't remember fate enough to write something more objective lol
Any other character was better written.
Even cartoonish and over-the top Ryuunosuke ? Also the fact that you dislike/like character is different from whether they're badly/well-written
I meant every character from UBW. I agree that Ryuunosuke was the worst character in Fate/Zero but at least he wasn’t a main character.
Shinji’s character worked as a VN protagonist but not as an anime character. A well written character is the one that has a distinct personality and development. Shinji had a personality of a cardboard and his „development” didn’t change that. Every other character (in ubw) didn’t get much development but they all had potential to become interesting characters and Shirou didn’t.
A well written character is the one that has a distinct personality and development
Bro you can't be serious if you're saying that Shirou had no character development or that there's nothing interesting. The entire plot is him coming to terms with himself and admitting that his ideology is completely broken and the only reason he acts so selfless is because that's his coping mechanism and he lacks self-worth.
He's so broken that being self-sacrifical is the only thing that makes him happy because he got mindfucked with PTSD.
I don't know any other character in fiction that was also confronted by his twisted disillusioned future self that embodied everything he strived for
Calling that uninteresting is just utterly wrong.
Ash Ketchum
I've been and still watch the Pokemon anime, but the writers won't ever let him age and mature that much. Now it is targeted towards children and the parts were Ash forgets typing is I'm guessing for comedy, but still. It's annoying for long-term fans to see it repeated multiple times. Another thing is I'd wish they'd stick to one art style, but I guess it's something to keep it fresh.
I don't think Pokemon is a series made for the "long term" fans. Which explains all of those decisions. They aren't expecting the guys who watched Sun & Moon to be the same who watched th OG series.
While that is true, I think they also try to cater a bit to long term fans. Idk his current team in Journeys, but I heard he has Gengar, Dragonite, Mr. Mime, and obviously Pikachu all of which are gen 1 pokemon, as well as Lucario a gen 4 pokemon. Most teams feature pokemon from the newest generation so at least in Journeys, they are considering their oldest fans.
all 3

out of anyone you could have chosen...them? Like, wtf. You could honestly convince me that you are trolling.
how so?
There's just so many other choices you could have chosen. Ray, Emma, and Norman seem to be normal protagionists who are much more intelligent than your average main character, and it's not like they are kids that cry every 2 seconds because of the situation they are in. They actively find ways to make things work and it's incredible how smart they are.
That's why I don't get it, I don't get the reasoning why you think they are the "worst" when there's far worse options out there.
Kazuya is so fucking annoying

Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru
Hachiman from Oregairu, he's deep and an outcast at the age of 16 (or 17, idk) because he got rejected by a girl in middle school lmao.
Have we watched the same show?
I watched all the 3 seasons of it and I still can't get over that backstory (although that was shown on S1 and I watched that a long time ago, so my memory could be blurry) :/
Yeah but Hachiman his way of thinking, him being deep and an outcast has nothing to do with him being rejected by one girl
Then where did his personality even come from? As far as I know nothing else happened in his life, no one close to him died, he was not taken away from something important to him... Well, he didn't get along with his classmates as a kid but how in the world does that turn you into a sociologist (understands people as a mass), psychologist (understands individuals as well) and Nietzche (solves everything in the more rondabout self-deprecating way) at the same time?
He is just a character I can't imagine existing or imagine myself learning something from his development simply because the premise of his character seems hollow, and as much as I hate to say this, also lazy, to me.
Debatable. I don't think he needs a reason, he just is like that. I see Hikigaya as someone who is too mature for his age group. I'm saying mature because I don't have a better word for it right now, but what I mean is that he overanalyzes his classmates and overthinks all possibilities while he should just let himself breathe. By doing that, he kind of excludes himself because he doesn't think he'll get along with people anyway. In fact, the only times he tried, he was met with awkward responses or none at all. We see the shift in people's opinions of him when he starts interacting more with them thanks to the service club. That gives him the opportunity to change his "negative" way of thinking too, which is, in my opinion, the point of him being in this club.
I think his character has a lot of depth and, though exaggerated, represents how anxious teenagers who overthink, see their high school life. They don't need to experience trauma to be the way they are.
i have my fair share of problems with (especially more recent seasons of) oregairu myself but this is how I see it. hikigaya is someone who doesn't understand social cues at all but is very prideful and wants to see himself as above or at least equal to his peers. this contributes to a cycle where he embarasses or in his view flat out humiliates himself in front of those same peers due to his social awkwardness and tendency to misunderstand those around him. this conflicts with his self image as a smart, self respecting person, so he tries to rationalize it as him just being too smart for his peers and that making it too hard for him to relate to them. this makes it actually hard for him to relate to them since he's developed a superiority complex while also having no clue how to actually normally conversate with people because instead of trying to find ways to relate to others he spent his time convincing himself that he's better than them. it's not just him being rejected by one girl, it's a mix of all the interactions he's had and the effects of the way he internalized and rationalized them.
I'm here to save the day, i'm the one who will say it!

https://anilist.co/character/89/Shinji-Ikari
It's rough that I have to put him here, as Shinji is an extremely realistic character that matches up to everyone's expectations if such responsibilities of "saving the world" were placed on someone. Evangelion illustrates the burden really well, especially through mental illness. But, it's still not fun seeing someone break down mentally. After episodes and episodes of preparing and pep talk Shinji still refuses to actively pilot, and eventually it makes the audience become sick of his antics. Of course, this is unfair for Shinji as technically it's completely fair for him to be freaking out, and to be scared but you know how this goes. Nobody wants a scared, whinny main character. They want someone who's cool, unique, badass. And Shinji just goes against all of those characteristics. He's extremely real, which places him both as a great protagonist but also a horrible protagonist, a double edged sword that works in two different ways depending on how you approach it.
Basically any harem protagonist.
To name any names, I would say Kirito from SAO (who was okay before he became a moody tryhard) and Kazuya from Rent-A-Girlfriend (who is literally just an indecisive rock).
Mushoku Tensei Jobless Reincarnation
The Mc is so dumb ngl. If you want a redo of another life WHY START AS A CREEP? That's gonna get you nowhere.
The Mom, Dad, and Maid are worse the dads a rapist, The mom brushes past the fact he had a kid with the maid and the maid really doesn't take responsibility.
This takes the cake for manga. The whole story is a clusterfuck the author really didn't know when to start the falling action in the story. I KID YOU NOT. During the last 3-5 chapters, the story was still rising in action. The MC is also just a fucking pussy throwing away his life on a girl who has moved on and lived her life peacefully.
Maybe she actually forgot since she lost her memory
The Author skips also skip over essential parts and makes the MC do dumb shit.
he had proof he was innocent and did nothing with it
I 100% SAY. DO. NOT. READ. THIS. MANGA.
I don't understand this random hate that Jobless Isekai MC is getting. He's a 32 year old man who was reborn as an infant but still thinks and acts the same way he does, of course he's going to be his usual virgin self. You are also listening to his thoughts so he's not acting on being a creep. Idk why so many people are letting this little thing get to them.
ash lynx from "banana fish".
any specific reason?
i think the writing of his character is lazy. he is super attractive, really good at fighting, a genuis and a very charismetic leader, and all that despite his past. he is pretty much flawless ecxept the whole being in the mafia thing but they didnt even make him morally gray - the show did everything it could to excuse his quiestionable actions. it feels like the writers tried to create a "perfect" MC and it just turned out boring
