I feel like ever since it randomly blew up on tiktok, a lot of opinions were formed and changed. what do you think about Death Note or it's fanbase?
Unpopular opinion time: Death Note is one of the most overrated animes of all time. I'm talking about the anime... I've never seen the manga but it seems like the anime is just a poor adaptation of the manga. I was seven episodes in and was like "hopefully this isn't just cat and mouse the whole time". Surprise... it basically was (minus- like- seven episodes in the middle). The plot was so depressing that you didn't even know who to root for... You could not prepare for any of the plot twists that happened because the characters reasoning was so "out-there". The last 7 episodes just randomly introduce characters that we're supposed to support? The only thing I appreciate about it is the dub was amazingly done. Again this is my thoughts on the anime. I'm sure the manga resolves a lot of the issues I have with the manga. Don't get me wrong... it's a great anime, but it's definitely not worth all the hype it gets.
The death note fanbase doesn't tend to over-rate any aspect of it's series or put it in everyone's face because it's a legacy anime which everyone has at least heard about.
I just feel that the recent spike in popularity on TikTok is just because people have found out missing details in death note, particularly relating to it's cruel applications of justice. The reason this happened is because most people probably began watching death note when they were pretty early into anime and didn't analyze much.
It was a Great experience for me.
It's probably my first time that I got to see a story of a Villain, with a sense of justice, I believe in. More like Light convinced me to believe in it. Light is a very interesting character imo, his motivations/actions, while still flawed, were still understandable.
As for fanbase, idk anymore.
The most a fan of Death Note I've seen goes, Oh... New to Anime? Definitely Check Death Note. That's pretty much it. Not really overhyping nor really dead.
Don't care about the fanbase since from what I've seen the fans are pretty chill and die-hard.
But Death Note itself, I feel, is extremely amazing. I do think that it got kind of inconsistent during the second half, but the overall it is still super-well written. No other series has surprised me so much in terms of the brain games (Except for Kindaichi)
The ending, although making more sense in the manga, was better in terms of philosophy in the anime.
The anime cut a lot of details in the brain games, but I honestly haven't seen all of the anime. I've read the whole manga.
The artwork and animation in the manga and anime is god-tier.
So yeah, Death Note is amazing.
