What are yall's thoughts on Back Arrow? I was hyped for a show themed like Guren Lagann but it's just not doing it for me. I find most of the characters to be forgettable, the plot feels weirdly rushed, and our protag just isnt all that likeable to me.
I'm not trying to hate on the show, I'm just trying to see if others share my experience or if i'm just crazy. I wish nothing but the best for the mech genre but im not sure this show is gonna be its savior
It's alright for me, enjoying my time so far with it but it's not anything crazy and doesn't need to be imo, I'll probably end up just forgetting 90% of it when it ends but is a good time sinker whenever I don't have anything to do in a day and there's an episode of it to watch. I do like Shu tho, very fun character.
I don't believe the mech genre "needs" a saviour, because if it's a genre it may have times where it has a notable dip in popularity, but after it starts to exist, it should be able to endure.
That aside, I actually really like Back Arrow, even though I'm not normally a mech fan. I am, however, a magical girl fan and my introduction to mech anime was Star Driver as a result, so maybe I'm biased like that (since you can make a lot of parallels between Star Driver and Back Arrow).
...I also like bishonen, so I was an easy mark for Shu anyway.
Just dropped it. I wanted to believe in it but honestly it's going nowhere, the characters are stupid and not interesting, Back Arrow is a very bland soulless Kamiya, the mecha aspect in it is meh, the conviction concept is awkward and not smartly used. The only character saving the whole thing is Shu, but honestly its not worth going on just for him. When you don't even wanna see the latest episode, its time to drop, sadly.
I'm still watching it only because of the theme song, the mech design is a bit different and likable, and I like the cute main character. Was really looking forward to a more interesting mecha anime that didn't have too many heavy politics like Gundam, but I can't find myself to pay attention to this one very easily. I'll finish it, but I think the score I'll end up giving it will be pretty low.
And yeah, it is like Gurren Lagann but with a lot less epicness
I'm enjoying the show myself, particularly after Shu Bi came on board to bring more dynamism to the cast.
My favorite episodes so far are episodes 5 and 7, so I don't share the negativity at all. Things have been gradually getting more interesting, especially now that they've reached the wall and the Lutoh faction is getting involved more directly. Saying that the series is "going nowhere" is simply false.
The protagonist himself needs to go through development but, well, we're obviously going to get that. It's evident there's more to do with Arrow as a character and the show isn't pretending otherwise.
Admittedly, the story is still in what we could call build up mode. You're not going to get an immediate payoff. Of course the situation will change, sooner or later, but it's not like we aren't seeing movement and progress. Again, episode 7 alone is a rather significant development even if it's not a huge plot twist.
Let's be honest. Not even Gurren Lagann really does anything spectacular until some very specific points, none of which came at the start of the series, so I wonder why some people apparently expect every single week to be "epic" or else they can't watch this show.
That's why I hate the negativity and lack of patience. It makes me lose faith in the anime community. In the end, I can only trust my own judgment and that tells me to keep watching.
I can understand tolerance for this type of story drops among certain audience sectors unless the animation is loud and bombastic and so far the production quality for Back Arrow is rather standard. I can accept that as a criticism to a degree.
But see, I grew up watching many old-school shows with limited animation, so I don't have this constant need for permanent excitement that others seem to demand.
I hope that some folks will come around when so-called "epic" events take place, but even if they don't give the series another chance...I'm still happy with the show, no matter what other people have to say, and if they can't enjoy it then that is their loss. I'm used to liking series that aren't very popular.
A lot of my thoughts have been summarized by @Kusaja above me, so I'll go into my other reasonings.
I say this a lot, but one of the things that first drew me to this series was because I expected something like another series by Back Arrow's director Taniguchi, Gun X Sword. Gun X Sword is definitely in that department of "slowly building up", but the pay off is massive. Not only that, but Back Arrow has the comedy elements and zaniness that it has. So, as a result, I really am enjoying Back Arrow.
But the difference currently is that Gun X Sword is already complete, which is why I constantly recommend it to anyone with a problem with Back Arrow so they have a better idea of what they're getting into.
But seriously, if you're saying this plot is going nowhere or is too slow, I'd hate to see how you'll react to a real slow-burn mecha series like Votoms.
The recent few episodes have been okay but I'm still not sold on it yet. It's not the Gurren Lagann a lot of people were hoping for, it's a lot more akin to old Tomino-styled mecha anime like the original Gundam or Space Runaway Ideon. Only difference is that it's not really offering anything those shows didn't do, not to mention those did it better. I'm still holding out for now and I'm not gonna drop it as is my tradition with a show I watch more than one episode of but I'm really hoping it improves. I'm seeing promise in the past few episodes so I'll just have to wait and see.
