I've been trying to find more "mature" anime that don't have cheap fanservice or have hypersexual-looking characters. I just want to enjoy something with a decent story, but I don't want to be distracted by annoying fan service plot devices like that. Any genre is fine by me.
Hi! I'd say you should watch Banana Fish and Terror in Resonance. Banana Fish is extremely dark and has themes of abuse/rape and drugs. It gets philosophical as well. Terror in Resonance is short yet so action packed, and it's heavy on morality. They're mature for sure.
thank u :)
@engie
Yeah don't listen to the Banana Fish recommendation, that show is fan servicey as fuck. It also spends half its runtime fetishizing gay relationships in a really gross way. Think 15yr girl yaoi fanfiction bad.
@TidePodChan I see. I didn't personally see it that way, I enjoyed the crime/mafia aspect of BF and the soulmate like bond between Ash and Eiji, which I thought was shown nicely. The show also establishes why it's wrong to sexualize the characters ESPECIALLY Ash. Any "service" moments aren't exactly service, they're crucial to the plot and emphasize Ash's trauma. To each their own though.
@TidePodChan I don't mean to be rude, but could you elaborate on how Banana Fish is fan servicey? I've watched the show recently and as far as I can remember, there was zero fanservice.
Watch Golden Kamuy, it has a good sense of comedy, and theres a lot of gore, and no Character sheild or whatever it's called, and all the characters are good too. Also theres really no nudity, and theres manliness too! You love to see it
thank u, im rlly looking for that "manly" vibe show, like vinland saga
If you're looking for something manly without any hypersexual fanservice stuff, here's a couple:
Fist of the North Star
Armored Trooper Votoms
Great Pretender
It does have some very minor moments here and there.
But its not really fanservice and doesn't distract from the story at all.
I'll try to give a little mix then, I've never been a fan of fanservice and found it always pulls me right out of the show.
Anohana The Flower We Saw That Day
Circle of friends meeting up again after growing up and apart and trying to reconnect.
After a rough city life and job he travels to a small seaside town to relax and find himself and purpose again.
Love of music and struggling to make and form a band from no names to making it.
A isekai with actual struggling nothing OP but light fanservice, transported to another world everyday is a victory and celebration.
Hey ! I've made this long list with plethora of details for another thread ! It was basically the same question, you should find something to your taste :)

the Garden of sinners Chapter 1 Thanatos Overlooking View
Dark, Urban Fantasy/Supernatural, Mystery. part 1 out of an 8 part movie series. The series as a whole gets pretty philosophical while also not being afraid to tackle fucked up topics like suicide, rape, etc. Follows a non-linear form of storytelling so have fun trying to piece it all together before the end.
Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken <- much more easily digestible than the following two shows
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
MUSHISHI
A few of my fav mature anime without fanservice:
Uchuu Kyoudai
Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu
Rainbow Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin
I don't know if you will like these, but I personally really liked them
Run with the Wind
One Outs
Paranoia Agent
Planetes
Honey and Clover
Kids on the Slope
INUYASHIKI LAST HERO
Off the top of my head
Fruits Basket 1st Season
@engie
I got one more for ya
Utena has flaws, it can be VERY repetitive, and silly, and insane. It's a show you'll either adore or despise. But it's also something very special and unique that can't be ignored.
Also has one of my favourite soundtracks of anything.
This for sure
How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift
you'll be surprised by how mature this show is for how lighthearted it is
this show makes me depressed af, but ty, it is one of my favorites.
meanwhile this show makes me full of joy and happiness
i can see how it does, because there are moments of the two characters that make me laugh and feel comfy, but at the same time it feels depressing because of their vast empty world, and all the things the girls don't know about because their lives have gone down such a different path than what we know today as normal. still a good show, no matter how you rlly look at it.
