I seriously don't understand how so many people like Eren Yeager. First, all Eren did was whine about the Titans. He never tried to understand them. The entire show up until the Final Season is just Eren saying "kill all the titans!!!" It's like he has no brain and that's all he's programmed to think. Then in the final season his character does a complete 180 and now he hates his friends for absolutely no reason? It's just stupid honestly. The author clearly just made this series for cheap thrills and it shows with how illogical the writing is.

I don't?
Demon slayer just took up a generic idea of a story
Main character loses family
Main character fight for cute waifu
Main character fight baddies
Main character make friends
Main character almost die
Main character strong
Main character have big enemy must fight
Main character is saved by power of friendship in end
And just face fucked it into one big anime with hot, characters. Eren yager hot though
Do you want a serious answer?
Ok, I'll go anyway, because why not?
I'll put it under spoiler because I don't know who'll read it and I don't want risk spoiling.
First of all, 1st season Eren is the natural consequences of literally seeing his mother getting eaten by a titan. How could you react? Please don't say "I'd act calm and think it throughly to find a solution", as it's shown in the first episode, when the Survey Corps return from yet another vain expedition, that in fact there are no solution in this world, at this point of the story.
Through season 1 part 2, season 2 & season 3, Eren learns that titan are not his only enemy. It's discovered that titans are none other than humans, forced to transform: losing their counsciousness, they wander randomly. trying to eat humans in order to regain their original form.
In other worlds, Eren now sees titans as victims of his true enemy.
But who's Eren's true enemy? To put it simply, it's the absence of freedom. This is a feeling that Eren retain from the first episode until the last.
I don't remember the exact quote, but in the first episode, when Eren gets angry at Hannes for slacking off, he says something about "don't want to live in a cage".
Now for the last episode, why he "hates his friends"? Excluding for a moment various other reasons as why he could be acting that way, absence of freedom is once again the answer;
in the eyes of Eren:
-Mikasa isn't free because of the story behind the Ackermann Family.
-Armin isn't free because he retains the memories of the previous Colossal Titan, Bertholdt.
At last, a crucial distinction: liking a character is not the same as liking said character as a person.
As a character, Eren is very well written and he shows consistency throughout the story.
As a person, well, it depends on everyone preferences. Personally, I stopped to root for him long ago because of his actions, but I still like him as a character.
Eren real enemy is racism and lack of diversity not absence to freedom. In reality that is his belief.
But again what can make him say Armin is visiting someone because of the previous Titan shifters. And why is he hating Mikasa as is she is also following Eren because it is the Ackermann blood even though she loved him even before he had the Founding Titan. And he would have easily realized that too. But he trying to make her hate him but only through a useless manner. Because you will scar someone you care about, in the end she will overcome her weakness without even your bad help. Because she only when it came to saving other then went against him.
So, it was pointless. He is just a emo idiot at this point. Because literally other people also went what he went through too but only him become emotionless. I mean where are other emotions. Anger ? Frustration ? Happiness ? Depression ? PTSD ?
He only show his emotion when he is insulting someone. That completely go against how he was and what he went through. And other also went through what he did. Other didn't became emotionless body. They showed proper emotion during circumstances. This is overrated and bad character development.
Actually it is
Edited my reply. This time added an explanation to why I think like that.
Ok, I get your point, but this still doesn't change the fact that Eren's main goal is freedom.
You have all the reason to despise him for how he treated his friends, but calling him emotionless?
Also, I know this sound cliché, but have you read the manga? I'm not saying anything, but please wait and see because you'll might find the answers to your questions.
Nope, ending racism is a part of it but Eren's main goal is freedom. Always has been.
Edit: Manga spoilers below(there are no spoiler tags so stop reading if you don't want to get spoiled)
Editted my reply read it.
Also, logically The Rumbling isn't suppose to work and if it work won't help the people of Paradis (because climate change through his action). So, basically even if you can say that it is his belief. This is what freedom is to him.
I don't find it a admirable thinking. Just bad writing.
I think we have already discussed this climate thing in another thread so I won't discuss it again here.
You interpreted it wrongly, Eren hurt his friends because he didn't want them to be a part of the crime he would commit.
Mikasa went against him because she knew genocide was wrong, she loved him yet still killed him. That was the point of her entire character arc(duhh)
So, it was pointless. He is just a emo idiot at this point. Because literally other people also went what he went through too but only him become emotionless.
What are you even trying to say here?
He only show his emotion when he is insulting someone.
In that 2 year time-skip when he was alone in Marley, he hardened his heart and became colder in order to separate his loved ones from him.
He hasn't even shown his emotions to anybody in the final arc let alone insulting someone

i think it's so unfair to put Mikasa in the same category as Zero-Two and Mai-san. She is literally the second strongest human in the Attack on Titan world. Saying she has no other redeeming qualities than being hot is straight up disrespectful man.

i literally don't get how you can say that when she is humanities second strongest soldier, the last descendant of asian royalty, makes her own decisions, stays true to those decisions no matter what and [redacted due to manga spoilers]. she is so much more than her looks and her character develop much beyond mai-san, zero-two, and many AoT characters. you're just ragging on her because she's a woman with a brain and strength
She has no personality nor brain. Her strenght she got because she was born an ackermann, not because she trained or anything. It's literally a heriditary thing, she barely did anything to make herself so strong. Ofcourse she needs to train and stuff, but it really isn't as cool as you make it out to be dude...
read the manga dude, she has so much more personality in it and like i said her character in the later-last arcs develops well beyond many other character. I seriously think y'all are jus mad because a 2D woman is worth more than you
Most people I've spoken to praise Eren because he is a great character above else. The fact that he is good-looking, cool and badass is just a bonus.
Eren has two goals: to achieve freedom and save his friends (or Eldians in general I guess). In s3p2 when he touched Historian's hand, he saw fragments of future. It has been suggested he might have seen something which led him to believe that unless he does something, Eldians will go extinct. In bathroom scene, he tells Hange "You can't win unless you fight. So fight, fight..." He also spoke with Reiner and told him they are the same. Both were forced to commit crimes. They simply chose the option to live, to survive. "It's the world that is wrong". That's why Eren "forgives" Reiner. It's the conclusion Eren came up with when he was questioning why his mother needed to be killed that day.
What I value in all this is how AoT created a believable character. All of his deductions make perfect sense from his point of view. For example, it's logical that someone who was always confined in those walls would become obsessed with obtaining freedom. To the point where he values it above everything else in life.

It's funny you mentioned Levi because he is the prime example of a character that is loved just because he is hot and cool. He is not the most fleshed out character and in fact, I don't even know where his sadistic nature and obsession with cleaning come from. What part of Eren's development made no sense to you?
they like him because he's hot...
it's because people recognise all he's been through and are able to understand why he acts the way he does
"First, all Eren did was whine about the Titans. He never tried to understand them."
his mother got eaten right in front of his face. he was a 15-year-old child and was filled with so much hate, there was no time to try and 'understand' the titans
"now he hates his friends for absolutely no reason?"
eren doesn't and has never hated his friends. he acts the way he does towards them to protect them and he's doing all he can to fight for the freedom of himself, his friends and all the people on paradis island
He is not the only person that has been through shit tho. Actually most people in AoT saw their family members get eaten but u don't see everyone act the way he does.
true, i also think there are a few aot characters with a more tragic past than him that handled it better
but you have to realise that everyone reacts to situations differently, and that's just the type of person eren is.
i think it's completely understandable to not like eren & i was just giving an answer to the question of the thread.
The author clearly just made this series for cheap thrills and it shows with how illogical the writing is.
I mean... this can be said for another certain series tagged with this thread, kuma...
But to be honest, Eren was just our reckless protagonist who swore vengeance against the ones who killed his kin, kuma. I don't like Final Season Eren too much, but he's pretty nice. I don't hate seeing him on screen though.
Edit: The demon slayer tag was removed, kuma.
S4 Eren has a reason for acting the way he does, but that won't be revealed until later. Some people like him because they agree with his philosophy (and think he's hot), while others hate him because they disagree, which is one of the major takeaways of the series: there is no real wrong or right, good or bad, just opposing beliefs.
Woah Woah Just because you hate the protagonist dont go around saying Attack on titan is just for cheap thrills and is "Illogical".
I am not trying to say I like Eren, I like the other characters more than Eren even now. All the characters, the world and everything whether you hate it or like it , Thats what makes AOT.
I believe this whole thread is a joke or some random hate thread on AOT. (Again , It's your opinion but....)

Before I say anything I have not read the manga, so my comments are anime only (also spoilers). Its not a matter of illogical writing, its about character development and growth. Eren is not supposed to behave the same way he did in season 1, especially with all the things that had happened to him throughout the course of the show. In the beginning of the show Eren is a teen whose entire life was stripped away from him because of titans, so it was understandable that he loathed them and how he still does. He's single minded for a reason. As the show progresses, Eren realizes this issue is much more complicated than he originally thought. However, he also acknowledges that the only way he can ensure safety for the people close to him is to eliminate these threats. You can cleary see this when he is talking to Reiner in season 4. As for hating his friends. He does not hate them. He wants to separate himself from them in order to protect them for as long as possible. This is shown in a flashback in season 4 when they were on this train thing. When he refuses to allow any of his friends to inherit his titan. Sorry if this is long or confusing.
he's a very simple and straight forward character that has almost no real change or arc throughout the series (as far as I've watched at least) Now this isn't a good thing per se, but a teenager (the majority of AoT fans) can easily wrap their head around a simple character like that.
Also he's hot but everyone already said that.
It is worth noting, however, he was one of the most hated anime protagonists for years until the most recent seasons came out. I don't get why fans changed their mind, but fandoms like the AoT fandom are very prone to simple manipulation severe groupthink so all it probably took was the right influencers saying they liked him and a good action scene to 180 people's opinion of him.
there are levels for his reasons and actions if you don't see them then you should try to look at the character once again. what is there to understand about titans if they are trying to kill you every second yk? there is a thing called character development in which happens in anime. This isn't some show that they can just become friendly with titans.
He never tried to understand them
When he was a kid, he only saw pure titans, a bunch of giant monster that eat people and don't seem to think. Back in S1 he didn't know they were humans yet
The entire show up until the Final Season is just Eren saying "kill all the titans!!!"
You have to first understand why he wants to kill all the titans. All he ever wanted since he was a kid was freedom. He wanted to go to the Survey Corps so he could go outside the walls, because that was his "freedom" at the point.
After the basement reveal he realized he would never be free because everyone outside Paradis Island hates them and want to destroy them. When he went undercover in Marley he realized that not everyone on the other side of the ocean is evil, but it doesn't change the fact that all the people in the government, armies and other powerful people want to exterminate them.
Then in the final season his character does a complete 180 and now he hates his friends for absolutely no reason
In the manga there is an explanation for what he is doing and how he really feels about his friends
Tanjiro's family was killed by demons yet he doesn't just kill all demons because he hates them. Eren is just a bad person.
Yeah it's almost like they're two completely different characters. Just because one is good it doesn't mean the other is bad. I see a lot of people comparing Eren to Thorfinn (two characters I love BTW), they start out in a similar point, the edgy "I want to kill everyone and my life sucks" kind of MC, but then they develop and take opposite paths. Both of them regarded as some of the best MC in anime.
Maybe Eren is just not for you, but don't say the writing behind his character is non-sensical, Isayama crafted him amazingly.
First of all, what you wanted him to understand about the titans? All they do is eat people and one of them did eat his mom. You could have had this criticism if titans were able to communicate or show any kind of emotions (pure ones) which they don't. You can't expect him to go full Tanjiro.
Up until the final season Eren didn't say 'Kill all the titans'. He stops towards season 2, in season 3 part 2 you can see that even when he comes across titans he hasn't any reaction, especially not that of hate because he understands now that there are bigger enemies out there and that the titans are actually (what he calls them) 'fellow patriots'.
He doesn't hate his friends, Eren has reasons to act the way he's acting. I don't know if we've watched the same show but Eren would never hate Mikasa and Armin; and if he does say so is because he has his reasons.
I dropped Attack On Titan two times cause of Eren. He's so annoying, treats his friends like shit when his anger issues hit and he is not even cute as people say. I don't find nothing good about him, I want to continue Aot cause I like some characters and the settings but I can't cause just the idea having to put up with Eren and his bullshit. They could have made a better MC ngl..
They could have made a better MC ngl..
They couldn't have made a better character than Eren let alone the MC
They could have tho, there is always a way to make something better
You are only judging Eren based on the 11 episodes you watched so everything I would say is probably going to be a spoiler
So.....uh....experience the character's development before judging them?
Is AoT we are talking about. I got the whole thing spoiled, so I pretty much know the development. And the 11 episodes are the ones I saw alone. Why should I keep watching sum I'm not enjoying? The MC is way too annoying, I already dropped the anime 2 times.
So again why should I keep watching till season 3, part 2 to finally see a "development".
Where have I told you to forcefully watch it? I's your decision to watch it or not. I was saying that since you haven't even watched half of the series,
They could have made a better MC ngl..
you saying this doesn't make sense.
His mother was eaten by titans what way do you expect him to act if not out of his hatred towards them. And I'll remind you, hatered for titans doesn't take away from his personality. Everybody hates titans, Eren is just hot headed and reckless, and that's why it feels like he's whining about the titans, but that's just his personality, which was influenced by the events that have happened to him. Makes perfect sense. And he doesn't need to understand them. They're brainless monsters
or at least that's what s1 makes you think what the hell even is there to understand about them?
He wants to kill the titans out of revenge and out of his desire for freedom. It's not stupid. If anything, it's perfectly justified.
And no, he doesn't hate his friends. He lies to them in order to protect them cuz he knows that if they chase after him, they'll die, and that's exactly the opposite of what he wants.
Why on earth would you try to understand mindless eating machines? When people try to understand things that try to kill them you end up with another Timothy Treadwell situation.
But I personally like Eren as of the Final Season because he is an entertaining and interesting character to watch. Reminds me of Timothy McVeigh in a lot of ways.
i believe its one of those things where you like to see him become a much more darker character, many people agree he is the true monster of the story now and i can see the appeal. personally i dont like him because i disagree with his ideology
his entire shtick in the previous seasons is that hes a shounen archetype in a much more mature world, and i can see why people would like that. but im a seinen guy so thats not really my thing, and truth be told his development did come out of left field a little.
also, youre not entirely wrong about the cheap thrills thing, at least with season 1, but season 2 really started ramping up the mysteries and the unbelievably tense action in season 3 part 2 is great imo
