I watched the first two seasons of the anime and enjoyed it a lot, but everything after that I've been told is shit, and I would like to know if the manga is worth getting into.
Holly shit you're just like me hahaha. Listen I've asked this same question and had this same opinion as you do and I decided to read the manga and watch the full series. First off root a is not cannon but that does not mean that root a is shit I really enjoyed it and it was nice that I saw Kaneki even in that way even though it isn't cannon. First season of RE is pretty good and pretty close to the manga as well. Second season of RE starts to do something different when you pass episode 6 and in my opinion they just threw out unimportant things that happened in the manga and made RE 2nd season shorter. If you really want to know, manga is just more things happened, characters got more depth and the art really is amazing, manga is surely the best way to experience and better connection for those who are reading, and for those that just want to watch TG you can keep watching the anime and you'll be okay. All in all you have to know what really happened and you need to read original TG manga. After that you can watch the first season of RE and second season up to 6th episode then start reading from 99th chapter and finish the manga. That's it
So, I'm going to be honest here.
I've only read the manga and all I have seen of the anime are the OPs.
I love Tokyo Ghoul but getting into it was tough. A lot of the times it is edgy for the sake of being edgy. But beyond that it is a genuinely entertaining story. The first part is really great but the ending feels weird but that's because the story is followed up in re. As for re, it had something going for it for the first 80 chapters and then the final arc comes the narrative just turns really weird. Especially towards the end, when a lot of the conflicts that had been set up for about the entire series are just dealt with and there is no proper resolution.
But in spite of all that, read the series in its entirety because Kaneki is an amazing character and I began to really appreciate his character after the final chapters of re.
PS Tokyo Ghoul's final arc is kinda whack because Sui Ishida felt he was done with the series and just did not want to work on it anymore.(This was stated by him in an interview). So maybe that puts things into perspective.
I've read both TG and TG:re as well as watched all 4 seasons of the anime. I think it's absolutely worth reading, especially if you liked season 1 particularly. I would say just read the manga from the beginning. There are some minor-ish changes in s1 from the manga (minor especially compared to the other seasons changes).
S2/Root A is an anime only path that Ishida (the mangaka) asked the anime director to go in. And both :re anime seasons rush shit so much it's just not worth watching imo. S2 at least had good animation and a fresh story, so i still enjoyed watching it. Seasons 3 and 4 have bad animation too; the only thing good out of those seasons is the OST lol.
I didn't think that the :re manga was as good as the original, especially towards the second half, but it was still okay.
Yep, it's totally worth it. The anime cut out a lot of things and changed the ending for season 1. After that, season 2 was complete filler. The author's original plan was to make ( season 2 spoiler)kaneki join aogiri, but then she instantly scratched that idea, and went the opposite way. The anime, however, followed the author's original plan and half assed everything throughout season 2.
It is recommended you read the manga from the start. I honestly think that tokyo ghoul: re was trash, both anime and manga.
You should mark it as a spoiler. If you just say spoiler and continue typing, chances are you've already read next by the time you realize it was spoiler.
Yo can do ~! on both sides of the spoiler area ( the ! is always on the inside) to mark it.
or you can highlight that area of text and just click the spoiler button at the top of the edito (4th button from the left)
