I just need to know why so many people love it because maybe i'm stupid but I feel like I didn't love it as much as everyone else -_-
For me, I loved it because I watched it right after Evangelion. It was refreshing to watch a show where I didn't want to analyze everything going on because that's not the type of show FLCL is. It's a comfort show for me, I can just put it on and enjoy the absolute absurdity of it.
The main story was easy to follow (imo, but some of the details weren't explained well) and the dub in particular really immersed me with the acting (Haruko's dub voice is perfect). The animation is top-notch as well, just very engaging and never a dull moment.
It has an added sense of nostalgia (given that the show is already built on nostalgic references) given that it comes from the early Toonami/Adult Swim era (only mainstream US anime block from the 2000s-now), and I love the unintentional added nostalgia layer that it creates with that (aging better over time, in other words)
It's not for everyone, and it's okay if you didn't like it as much as everyone else. Not all "classics" hit the same for everyone. Just right place, right time, and perfect vibe for me.
I want to preface this by saying I am shitfaced on scotch and codeine thanks to a massive hole in my molar and a coinciding ear infection. If I stop making sense, blame Obamacare for not including Dental. Huzzah for not being able to feel my teeth for once!
This is going to ramble. I'm listening to the soundtrack as I write this. It's that good.
OK! FLCL is one of those anime where the mental state of the viewer is important. Nostalgia is a crazy strong force and a coming of age story like FLCL coming along at JUST the right time is going to leave a far more lasting impact on some as opposed to others that might watch it as part of your average PTW clearing.
TBH I actually took the dive into FLCL after playing the Zone flash "game" and deciding that it asked more questions than it answered. I had stumbled on the finale as my first exposure to the series. What a confusing mess lol.
Experimental visuals, suggestive themes, a fucking amazing soundtrack and a short run with an open ending gave it legs to stay in the subconscious of an entire generation whose previous exposure to anime had been Cobwboy Bebop and maybe say... fuck that one with the space ships and the arms on the spaceships... Drawing a complete blank but it was on the Toonami run around the same time back in the day... Outlaw Star! another coming of age story.
FLCL is good. For some it's great. Don't feel like you are missing out or aren't as "in tune" to the pulse of anime hipsters if you don't enjoy it like others do. It's just one of those subjectively exceptional anime.
most people cant handle implied visual narrative or show dont tell in simpler terms which is sometimes lost in more modern anime that like to spell everything out for the viewer.
not that im saying FLCL is particularly deep but its a nice coming of age story and a top work from gainax if its definitely surreal but thats the charm
well, your opinion about any show depends on your taste and what kind of animes you like - surely, flcl is not anime that everyone will like. what i really love about flcl is how absurdity it is, and somehow, never get lost in it. it's so youthful and has many unconventional metaphors, that makes you feel sorta nostalgia, at least in my opinion. characters are well written, and animation (i will mention that it's from 2001 and still has a really great graphic) is pleasing for eyes. an energetic story of embracing individuality, which is dumb and illogical, but at the same time makes you move your braincells.
FLCL is what I have always wanted from any animated medium! It's got superb animation, a kickass soundtrack, extremely deep characters and a great story. You can either watch the show for some dumb fun, or overanalyze the characters, which is something that's not possible with most anime and I adore that. I am a huge fan of unconventional story-telling and experimental stuff in general, so FLCL is a perfect fit for me. There are so, SO many details you won't ever notice during your first time watching it, the show basically keeps on giving.. I already loved it after watching it once, but I can confidently declare that it's my favorite anime of all time after rewatching it a few times.
It is an amazing show about coming of age and relationships. Though it is understandable if you don't like it, I had a blast watching it. The music by The Pillows is simply phenomenal. The art and animation are absolutely top-notch, especially considering it was made in 2003. The relationship Naota builds with Haruko, Mamimi and Eri is an excellent representation of toxic relationships, meddled in with the growth of Naota make for an absolute ride, in a story of what seems to be random shit done just because, when in reality it is trying to portray this connections and bonds in between these characters to tell a compelling story about love and self-discovery.
I also believe that it is very understandable to like it just because the show demonstrates that much of a persona throughout its scenes, colors, and soundtrack.

To summarize
I understand why others might not like it because of how fanciful, and just stupid a lot of the things in it can be. But personally the reason i really liked it, was because of that. It just has such a unique and vibrant quality to it that it feels like a breath of fresh air. It has such episodic, and nonsensical plot not even a plot just characters living in their ordinary world. It isn't perfect, I don't love it, but I sure do god damm life it.
Alot of people are saying but, I'm sure everyone loved the aesthetics and production that went into the show, the goddamn amazing animation and a 10/10 soundtrack from The Pillow.
But if you start claiming about a "deeper meaning". You're being overly pretentious. Yes, this is show is sexually charged with undertones of adolescent chaos, but those are obvious and less meaningful than what people think it is.
Although I love FLCL, I do think it's meaning is rather simple but that doesn't mean it aint great, what's great is picking a simple concept and making it so interesting, to me personally it's the "simple" journey of a boy entering adolescence heading into adulthood. So I kinda agree with you on that but saying "this or that" is less meaningful than people think is short sighted, as if your vision is imperative over others.
Because meaning is a personal thing that changes due to a lot of factors and even when creators try to portray something they can create a whole different meaning to different people and that is neither wrong or less important. So calling people overly pretentious for finding a meaning that you don't is just as pretentious imo.
This show managed to capture a certain essence and energy that is very unique and perfectly complements the coming of age themes present. In the anime world, most coming of age shows are grounded and has been told similarly in other television and films, and FLCL is a standout thanks to its 6 ep and animation format.
the thing about flcl isnt seeing a good story or something. It is meant to show you a time that will never come back in your life. Like when you sat in front of a screen as a kid and just watched. You didnt care for the plot or how well the characters are written, you just watched and enjoyed. Its exactly that feeling you get from watching flcl. Sure, the story is random and doesnt make sense, but you arent meant to think about that. you are meant to enjoy it. just pure enjoyment as if you are a kid again and see random stuff on the tv. That all paired with the music from the pillows and great animation gives me a 10/10 show i could learn something from
To put it simple, it's a Stupid show and it knows it pretty well. I mean, just look at the title.
It looked like; it's some name of chocolate bar that no one eats.
I don't know and I don't care, if it really has some deep message or doing some foreshadowing or something like that. It's pure absurd & random, and it's great in that regard.
I just need to know why so many people love it because maybe i'm stupid.......
That's even more of a reason to like the show. I looked it as some funky ride after seeing the first episode, and it's pretty entertaining in that regard.
