I will start it off with my opinion on this...

  I wonder about that. Hisoka's main drive is to fight strong opponents. If he were a pedo, wouldn't now be the time to strike? He sees them growing as a positive thing (opposite mindset of a pedo). He saw the potential in Gon and Killua and he's waiting for them to get to that point. Nothing really indicates he is gay, but I'm not so sure it's the wisest to include it in a statement alongside pedo as if those two are in the same league. Perhaps that wasn't the intention but it wouldn't hurt to be a bit more mindful in the future.

  well, depends on which hisoka you consider canon in your eyes
  for some odd, unknown reason, most anime/OVA adaptations of hxh made hisoka a pedophile. but in the manga, the predatory scenes (like the screenshot linked earlier) don't exist at all from what ive heard. all he was was a psychopath just as you described it. nothing more or less.
  
  not that id trust any hisoka fans though, considering most of them came from the 2011 anime. either theyre very naive teen girls or they have some deep-seated problem. i just wanted to add this reply as a side-note to keep in mind.

  as in the 1999 anime right? yeah, the series itself and the first two OVA's didn't have that predatory scene, you remembered correctly. i guess it was a bit misleading to say "most" adaptations on my part ^^"
  but unfortunately they switched to a different director (and prob different writers) for the third OVA, Greed Island Final, writing the exact same scene as the 2011 one. the OVA itself is still good, but it's a shame they dropped the ball with hisoka.
  i guess madhouse took some ahem....""inspiration"" from that OVA, and not the good kind.

  Yeah my feelings for this guy are complicated. The only way i can think of
  to describe them is that "i love watching him but watching him get hurt is
  the most satisfying thing at the same time."
  
  Although ... ive been spoiled on just how hurt he gets, and
  really, i wouldn't wish that even on someone like him ^^' In
  other words, saying i hate him "entirely" isnt what i'd call it.
