Yes.
would you care to elaborate lolll
Lmao I was too tired to explain, I just saw that you were trying to start "long, deep conversations" and thought it would be funny to answer with a single word. Anyways, here is what I think:
I basically agree with you for the most part. You can judge art, anime (etc.) objectively, but to an extent. The "personal enjoyment" factor will always be there, but that mostly depends on the person. A person who is mostly driven by emotion will probably rate/judge everything while being driven by that emotion. For example they wont care if the story is "good" or if the art/animation is beautiful, they will probably rate something highly if it made them emotional and they will consider something bad if they got bored by it. Personally, I am not an emotional guy, so I rate stuff based on how "objectively" good they are. Of course enjoyment plays a huge part, but still, in order to enjoy something, it has to have little-to-no plot holes, well-written characters, beautiful animation etc. So, I think you can rate stuff objectively, but a lot of people don't understand that since they follow their personal feelings. Now the most common counter-argument to my opinion is that: "Well, there are people who rate stuff based on emotion and personal enjoyment, but if they found something of value while watching this objectively bad show, doesn't that mean that this show can't be objectively bad?"
And here is what I say to that:
Let's say for example that I decide to make an anime. Since I have no idea how to draw, how to animate, how to voice act (etc.), the end result will probably be a complete mess. So, if we compare my "anime" with every single anime out there, almost everyone would agree that it's shit. Even if one person likes it for one reason or another, that still doesn't make it comparable with every other anime out there, because it is objectively bad. Even if that guy found something "of value" in my shitty show, that doesn't mean that there aren't literally hundreds of shows that can replicate that exact feeling and are better in every single aspect. That person just hasn't seen these shows yet. I know this is an extreme example, but this applies to other shows that are universally accepted as "objectively bad" like EX-ARM for example.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think we can look objectively at someone's taste or what they find enjoyment in, anyone can enjoy anything, there is no question about that. But there is a huge difference between just liking or disliking anything you want, and disregarding the existence of objectivity entirely. You can like a bad show, you can dislike a good show, but that doesn't change the fact that some shows have more plot holes, worse written characters and worse animation than others. I feel like it is an insult (well... not really an "insult" but I can't think of another word right now lol) to the story writers, character designers, animators (etc...) who DO care about their works being as close to perfection as possible, to say that all of these works are equal and only subject to our own opinions.
