I'm not saying this anime is good, but i don't see why people think it's so trash. I don't think that the weird step sister plot is enough to make this anime be hated so much.
This is my opinion and you may think differently.
I think the fact that the show handles a handful of controversial topics makes it hard for many people to accept/enjoy the show. Throughout watching, the relationships felt "wrong" and inappropriate which made me actively want to condone the relationships and the show itself - I'm sure many would think along line if watching casually.
However when I took a step back to try to understand the show, the show is actually trying to handle a very mature and difficult topic. Society has a negative outlook on teacher-student romance, step-sibling romance, etc, but the show tries to challenge these views. Is it truly wrong for the main characters to fall in love with each other or is that a consequence of how society has pressured us? Society may frown upon these relationships but I'm sure they do happen in real life - how should people cope if they are in these relationships? How many people hide and distance their feelings due to societal pressure?
Some might condone the relationships formed in the show and see it as "trash" but others may appreciate how it does actually represent real life situations which people are effected by. The show handles the touchy topics well but not brilliantly in my opinion.
Because nothing happens in the anime, it's just talk talk talk and nothing IMO
Nothing happens!?! Not only does the OP actually kiss A girl (already 1000x more than what happens in most Anime romance) BUT HE BANGS 2 GIRLS... SISTERS... ONE IN THE FIRST EP! How TF is that nothing!? I can appreciate it if you just didn't like it, but you're objectively wrong than nothing happened - more happened in it's sole season than literally any other non H anime romance.
This was one of the the most realistic and honest portrayals of actual romance and interpersonal relationships in anime. It's up there with Scum's Wish, Nana, and More Than A Married Couple. Why is it only anime with controversial/raunchy/abusive themes that get this treatment? IDK, but it seems to be the case.
If that's the case, give me the taboo, because if I watch another 10 EP of a 8+/10 HS romcom in which the MCs obsess over an "indirect kiss" (only a thing bc anime) or holding hands and are embarrassed to even exist - I'm gonna lose my shit!
Long time since I have seend the anime, which was not bad only poor handled. The manga is more suited for it since it gives you more space to think.
I really enjoyed the manga and the anime because I see myself I could fall for this immoral affections and deeply thinking at it made me realise how unfair this world can be sometimes.
And if I may be rude, peaople who just trashtalk all anime arround the world without double thinking into the meaning and hard work that was put behind don't deserve the right to watch any of them.
oh, I don't know, maybe because our male lead here was having a relationship with a woman who's at least 8 years older than him, or maybe how people decided to feel emphatic to their relationship because of a dumbass book, or, as you mentioned, the whole step sister plot.
Man I wonder.
4 years older... Also, I haven't watched the anime, but the last 5 chapters of the 275 chapter manga are so incredibly backwards and just... Incredibly fucking stupid, I just won't bother watching.
For 270 chapters, I swear to god, all of that that you're criticizing is actually handled really well. How someone could fuck up THAT hard and ruin years of work in 15 minutes of manga is actually beyond me
while natsuo can be so dense sometimes it makes it more reaslistic. yes i understand that when you explain it the manga/anime sounds shallow and has little thought or meaning behind it. when you take the time to think and change your perspective to the other side it kinda becomes beautiful. and its not one of those animes where they only get romantic feelings after they become step-siblings in terms of natsuo and hina. but some parts make me cringe but i think part of that is because society has deamed these types of relationships as innapropriate. im not saying they arent, but at least with student-teacher relationships/feelings from my understanding they are kinda common.
Its simple people want to things go how they like.
Some are just against the lover turned step-sister cliche (there are plenty of shows out there with same cliche), so they hate every anime that has it.
Some want a show to be precisely how source material depict (I'm not saying its not loyal to source as I've no clue about the content of source & infact find this comparison shitry), so they hate every damn anime afterall its impossible.
Some want a happy ending or light story. They are in romance ecchi genre animes for shitty light stuff. This anime is not that kind.
Some want story to go similar direction but with one variable change. These people just doesn't want the story what's written but instead they want to write their own story. So again they hate the show.
This show happens to be a mixture of all.

You're clearly projecting. You do realize the creator is a woman, right? I haven't seen anyone say this situation is normal or realistic, it is fiction after all.
What is realistic, or at least more so than virtually all other romance anime are the feelings and the ways the characters react to, and act on, them (besides the oldest sister, she definitely should have noped out). It's not just some idiots getting all red in the face over brushing up against the opposite sex or sharing an "indirect kiss," paralyzed by fear of feeling any amount of discomfort. That's not realistic, at least not 99.99% of the time as anime would have you believe. "We can’t normalise this bullshyt" not even the most sexually repressed culture is this prudish. They wouldn't exist.
I'm betting you haven't seen the show, so in defense of the plot, it's not like the MC just decided to bang his step sisters, he hit one before and the one that came after was his crush prior. It's not nearly as messed up as everyone makes it seem... I mean, it is, but because of circumstances.
Bro I read a thousand comments everywhere talking about how realistic it is, I just said my opinion after reading those comments. Ngl but it’s more realistic having a situationship as an indirect kiss than having a crush over a stepbrother or stepsister
My bad, didn't mean for that reply to come off so hostile. If I'm mad at anything, it's anime tropes.
I guess we're seeing different comments, because I haven't seen any stating the incest aspect of the show is realistic. But teenagers getting all worked up over, and attributing any legit romantic meaning to, sharing a drink is not a thing, it's a meme that exists thanks to anime and is contrived writing. It's the worst anime trope, and I will die on that hill.
Putting that aside, do you think the MC just fell for his stepsister, after they were already related? Or if you do know the plot, and know that's not the case, do you think most people would suddenly lose interest in someone they've been in love with for years, just because their parents got married? How about someone they just lost their virginity to? Would you expect someone who is 16+ years old to suddenly change heart?
I'm not saying the situation itself realistic, but how the characters handle, and react to, it is (obviously with some exceptions - looking at you, big sis). I, and I think many fans, would be fine with or even prefer the whole incest aspect be removed, or replaced by an entirely different conflict to warrant the story. The things this show does well in depicting romance, and that are almost never seen in anime romance, make it great IMO.
IDK why it's almost only shows with morally questionable themes that portray romance in an even remotely realistic way, I wish it wasn't that way. My guess is it's because 99% of anime must have an adolescent cast and is targeted to the same age group, so it keeps things unrealistically puritanical (for some reason fan service doesn't count?). However, when a show's core premise is already salacious, then the writing can be more permissive in handling relationships in general.
But yeah, the show, and it's depiction/inclusion of incest really isn't that bad and it's a shame that's what everyone focuses on.
Wdym it's a meme 💀 I already shared a drink many times in my life.. get real man. AND U CAN’T SAY THAT cause looking at your profile I don’t see more than ONE shoujo so u can’t say it’s more realistic and interesting this disgusting anime. If u say it’s more realistic than the harem you’ve watched well yeah, that’s true, but say it better then. Everything you're saying doesn't make sense, "a suddenly change heart"? Are you the n.1 fan of this anime or som? Well I don't care that much, but YEA CONTINUE DEFEND INCEST! There are A LOT more romance anime that are actually GOOD, with a GOOD PLOT, AS MUCH GOOD THAT THEY DON'T HAVE TO USE INCEST FOR GETTING INTEREST BY PEOPLE.. but whatever, I think that even if I say all the reasons why this anime is trash u will just take notes and tell me why I'm wrong. So let me just say one thing, don’t go saying that an anime gets realistic only with “morally unquestionable themes” cause just by that the anime it’s not realistic anymore, or are you gonna tell me that you had loved a girl/boy before they turned to be your sister/brother and still loved her/him and had a relationship with her/him? NAAAAA I DON’T THINK SOO, not even your friends, or family members, acquaintances, so get real pls. You can’t go saying “I, and I think many fans, would be fine with or even prefer the whole incest aspect be removed” and then conclude your argument saying “and it's depiction/inclusion of incest really isn't that bad and it's a shame that's what everyone focuses on.” ask yourself WHY people focus on incest mhhhh why huh, difficult to understand why! If u need any help for find an INTERESTING FOR REAL romance u can ask me in the future, this is certainly not something good and it’s liked only by guys, never seen a girl liking this cause it’s immoral and a creepy fantasy, idk if it was a woman writing this, it doesn’t mean all women like incest or like doing mangas for men preferences. Have a good day
Replying over a month later (I'm not on here often)...
Well, that wasn't the response I was expecting... I'm not going to go point-by-point here, because I feel like I did a decent job of laying out my case earlier. Whether you chose to address or understand that isn't on me.
I do think you misunderstood my take of the "indirect kiss." Unless you're actually saying when you've shared a drink you've gotten the butterflies, and if that's the case, I'd say you're definitely the one who needs to touch grass, as well as lay off the anime. It's not that serious, not even a little.
Almost everything in my profile is just from Kodi automatically adding what I watch there. It's a fraction of what I've watched elsewhere including Netflix, Crunchyroll, Hulu, etc. However, you're right, I haven't watched much shoujo. I am a guy after all. From what little I've seen (maybe 5-8 shows?) have my own issues with some of the reoccurring themes, just as I do with other romance anime, but that's besides the point.
I like stuff with emotions that feel real, even if the scenarios aren't, and there are some authentic feeling emotions in this anime for better and for worse. I'm generally not a fan of harem anime for this reason. In another comment you take issue with the MC losing his virginity to Rui despite being in love with his teacher - if you don't believe that's real, or something that 90% of 16 year old boys would, then I don't want to be the one to break it to you. This is an area in which this anime objectively distinguishes itself. As far as the other issues you had, in Japan and throughout the world...
I'm not saying any of that is right, it's not, but for someone who's principal criticism of this anime is it's lack of realism, I think it's clear you're no authority on the subject.
Either way, it seems you're set in believing anyone who doesn't wholly condem this anime is an incest loving creep. I thought my reply was polite and measured, but you came back with personal attacks and histrionics, so I guess there's no point.
Sorry for late reply, I just finished the show. About what you said that it’s unrealistic to fall in love with someone and later find out they’re family: it actually happened to me. I fell in love with a girl, we were dating, and later found out we were cousins. Sure, not siblings, but still blood-related, which makes it even trickier than just step-siblings. We broke up because society said it wasn’t “acceptable.” Did I still love her? Yes. Did she still love me? Probably. You can’t just forget feelings instantly. So yeah, it’s rare, but it can happen.
