Just as the title suggests. I for one really disliked Charlotte, but whenever I talk about it to people a lot of them seem to really like it. When it was first announced with all the details, especially that one big detail about how the staff working on Charlotte were the same staff who worked on Angel Beats, I was really hyped. Angel Beats wasn't perfect, but it touched me, so I was excited to see whether or not Charlotte would touch me as well.
Unfortunately, I was left disappointed with the rushed pacing, meh soundtrack (except the OP though, I really liked the OP), and that even more rushed ending.
Different people have different opinions, I get that and I respect that, but I'm wondering if you guys also have an anime you dislike but are liked by a lot of people :p
I agree with you that the pacing in Charlotte is bad. It could have been better if they gave it more episodes and focused less on comedic episodes.
I personally dislike Clannad. The characters are way too underdeveloped for my tastes. You could literally place these characters in any other anime and it wouldn't change the story. But I also just didn't find them interesting. I can't get attached to a character I don't find interesting. So even though the events that happen are sad I don't get hit with the emotional impact because I don't feel any emotional connection towards the characters in the first place. And thus, the story doesn't do anything for me. The only thing that I really enjoyed about the series was the opening songs, otherwise I just felt completely bored the whole time and only continued watching to see if it actually got any better.
Same here. Only reason I'm watching After Story - and I have it on hold rn - is because my friends tell me the first season sets up the characters for the second. I'm around a quarter through, and I still don't feel anything for the characters. However, the dull atmosphere, at least for me, has lifted a little bit due to some of the events in the second season so far.
It pretty much stays the same. It's also pretty predictable too if you haven't already been spoiled about what happens. It pretty much just gets to the point where you're just watching it to say that you did and to further validate your opinion of the series. And then people can't try say "your opinion doesn't count. You didn't finish the series."
I know what you mean. For me it's definitely Madoka. I don't want to go into the details why, as I'm not interested in discussing it, but it fits exactly your description in my case. The general phenomenon of having the exact opposite opinion/feeling as the majority is certainly an interesting one and I don't think that it can be explained with arguments as 'bad taste' (is there such a thing?) or 'not getting it': I found that often people who had the minority opinion had understood more about the subject matter than those who liked it, but that's purely anecdotal.
i agree with you on the whole "bad taste doesn't exist" thing. just because one person understands or really likes one thing, doesn't mean that every single person in the world has to like it too. I actually think it's interesting how one show can bring about many different views and opinions, it makes us see what a show has from a lot of different angles.
This season? Ditfxx.
A reall shame because I really want to like it. And I love Trigger. (even stupid inferno cop)
But I think I'll try it again once it's finished.
Were you watching as it aired, or did you start it up after a few episodes were already released? A friend and I have been watching since episode 1 and man the beginning was a rough watch. Neither of us could understand the hype behind the show and we were really questioning why people actually liked it, and we still don't know. We considered dropping it a few times, and got REALLY close after episode 8, but decided to stick with it.
I have to say, even though I didn't endorse just now, my friend and I are hooked on the show. Every episode now just feels great, especially after 2 episodes that were absolutely incredible. I would recommend giving it another shot, cause speaking from experience, waiting a week for a crappy episode, only to get another shitty episode the next week, was terrible, but maybe watching the weaker episodes consecutively would make it seem better.
Watched it 2 weeks after?
I'm on episode 4 an if you're telling me it's going to get rougher %-}
I'll just wait and see if the end pays off since I follow discussion threads and then I'll watch it.
I can understand that. I probably would have done the same had I dropped it myself. In my opinion, it starts ramping up around episode 9-10 which is a quite a bit where everything prior is just ok, (except I still say 8 is the worst). If you do stick with it hopefully you end up liking it because its really hitting some high notes for me.
Re:Zero
How many episodes did you watch before dropping? Because I thought it was going to be a generic anime the first episode or even two, but it ended up being really good. I'm so glad I stuck with it!
In the beginning I thought it was really good and the plot actually seemed to have some depth to it. About halfway through it became a lot worse with all the silly romance drama. Not to mention the ending was anticlimactic af. I can see why people like it though, but for me this kind of theme simply doesn't work without some good comedy to balance out the dullness.
Without going into hot take territory, Haikyuu was this for me unfortunately. I totally get what a lot people love about the series, it just wasn't clicking with me.
Same, I also watched the first ep and immediately dropped it, I can see why people find it interesting but I don't care enough to continue. Now that I think about it, I can never get into any sports anime bc I've also watched in the past the first ep of kuroko no basket and free and I found it very boring. Tho I do wanna read the manga of eyeshield 21 and ashita no joe so I guess I didn't choose the right shows for me.
i watched the first season of haikyuu and actually quite bored for most of it as i thought it was basically kuroko no basuke - but with volleyball
of course i understand why people like it but for me i just couldn't watch and enjoy without wondering when the episode was going to end
although i do think the character designs were nice, very cliche !!
but overall it isn't a bad anime but after season 1, i couldn't bear to watch the next one as i was so incredibly bored
Hyouka
It's not really about the mysteries...ok
It is not a romance
It is not a comedy
It is not really much drama
It is not moe and the characters aren't cute
It is not iyashikei or comfy or whatever..
What is it other than a snoozefest?
People say it is brilliant but they never say why, and I don't understand it.
Well I can't say why many people like it but I can certainly give you the reaon for why I personally like it so much. First of all I have to point out the stellar direction (I know nothing that tackles any of your points but worth mentioning). It plays with your expectations (see the café scene) along with those of Oreki the protagnoist. The art is simply beautiful and while the animation isn't excellent all the time when it needs to be good it can be really good. The soundtrack is quite varied and fits whenever it's used plus I'm a fan of both OPs and the second ending but that is obviously quite subjective. So much for all the "technical stuff". While it's not necessarily a mystery show in the classical sense its mysteries (which can be classified as such since they follow the formula of Question-> Clues -> Deduction -> Solution) in and of themselves aren't the main focus. They serve more as a developmental tool to develop/establish characters which is quite the interesting usage of a mystery in my opinion. In that ssense it's more of a slife of life character "study" than anythig else. Something which can be intriguing in its own right. As such it doesn't need an overly extensive focus on Drama or Comedy as that would only ruin the special atmosphere it has. It's a moderate show for sure (save for quite interesting and symbolic visuals at times such as whenever Oreki has his "hallucinations") but that for me is its strong suit. It's not over the top (although I can appreciate that as well), its characters compliment each other wonderfully, it has quite the good amount of messages regarding personal conflict, lifestyle choices and society (although the ladder one is debatable as its only really tackled through its effects on the character's psyche and personality). What can I say I really like the show.
Devilman Crybaby. I jumped into the series listening to all the hype and was expecting an amazing series.
However, what I got was a show with pretty terrible pacing, horribly written characters that were both stupid and had either no motivation or completely nonsensical ones, and some odd choices of animation that only worsened the conflicting tones (which weren't executed well mind you).
The only good parts of the show really were the action scenes, the amazing synthwave soundtrack, and a select few moments of the series that really showed its potential. Besides that it was pretty lackluster.
Are you talking about the old or new one? I’ve not yet seen it , but was planning to in the next few weeks so that bums me out to hear
People will react to it differently per say. For example, I really enjoyed the show for its refreshing art style and wacky action scenes and underlying message that reality can be really f'ed up. It's definitely worth a watch just for the experience.
The show's art style was unique sure, but it honestly wasn't the best. At times the animation and art was just awful. And I'm not even talking stylistically, just from an artistic standpoint. Sometimes characters would have almost no facial details. Unique isn't always a good thing.
The underlying message is also nothing new. What's the message? That humanity can be evil? That's not a new message at all and one that's been explored in almost every piece of media since the beginning of times. Granted you can explore these themes in a new way or in a way that is interesting, but Devilman Crybaby doesn't do that. It's pretty immature honestly, partly due to its rushed pacing and nonsensical character motives.
If you're going to drive the point home that humanity can be evil, the descent to that has to be believable. But in the show it's just....ridiculous and with a bunch of plot holes.
I think much of the criticism you probably derive from the show can be somewhat pacified if you consider that the show is an adaptation of a really old and heavily inspirational manga that in a way was a contributor to much of the anime tropes and ideas we have today. I'm not saying there aren't a number of flaws within the series but I do stand by my recommendation that it's worth seeing whether you end up loving it or finding it mediocre.
Serial Experiments Lain.
How come?
I didn't really like it too much either, but not because I necessarily thought it was bad. I think it's very visually interesting and do think that many of the concepts and themes are pretty deep and meaningful for their time, but regardless of that I kind of thought it was a bit slow and boring at times. It's one of the shows that I thought was pretty solid, and acknowledged why people regard it so highly, however I would personally say that despite how interesting it's ideas are, the way they are presented just failed to keep my attention the whole way through.
Such is the era of instant gratification. I certainly felt the same way you did.
For me, I think I might have to go with Hunter x Hunter. I don't hate the series or anything, but I just can't quite bring myself to get into it. I haven't yet finished it, and only made it to the beginning of the prolific Chimera Ant arc, however even then I'm just not feeling it all that much. The story is pretty sporadic, with the focus constantly shifting, and the tone and style along with it. Some people regard this as a positive, but to me it sort of feels disjointed, and kind of takes away from it. What I mean is, every arc feels too separate from each other if you ask me, and it makes it feel like there's no focus at all. The story seems to put a heavy emphasis on the relationship between Gon and Killua, but I don't feel like it adapts enough over time to retain my interest. Regarding the other characters, Kurapika I thought was very interesting, as I'm definitely fan of the classic revenge story and really liked the way they set up a moral ambiguity between him and the Phantom Troupe, however they never really went anywhere with that following the YorkNew City arc, and even if they did later on I feel like it'd be too long of a wait for me to even care anymore. Then there's Leorio, who is honestly the most slept-on character I've ever seen in a shounen-battle series. There have been some pretty bad cases of this but I think this might be the worst one I've seen, which is unfortunate because I really liked him in the beginning and was excited to see how he would develop over the course of the story. It really does pain me to spout my discontent with this series, because I do like certain aspects about it, but I just don't quite get why it's so highly regarded. I've also seen the author's previous work, Yu Yu Hakusho, and enjoyed it quite a lot, mostly due to what I believed to be a very strong cast, not to mention an amazing protagonist. I'm really not too sure why I couldn't get into Hunter. Maybe a future rewatch will allow me to better appreciate what I failed to see in it this time around.
Hellsing ultimate. I was recommend that anime by my friend, I thought of binge watching it all day cause I literally had nothing to do that day (each ep was like 49 mins long. So, I thought it would be a good watch). Man, I was honestly never disappointed this much by such a highly rated anime, It was just all bloodbath and pure bullshit. I didn't like a single character in it and it didn't even peak my interest in it even a single bit.
Elfen Lied for me, i was expecting a great horror anime, instead i got an awful looking anime with the densest MC, a stupid, attention seeking and abusive cousin and not to mention all those other females. The plot was just dumb, didn't see a hint of it being deep as others decribed it.
As for Charlotte, I think I watched about 2 episodes, but i didn't really click with it.
Gintama - its not that I completely dislike the anime, the characters are great and it is quite enjoyable, but I feel like there is nothing like a greater goal the characters work towards, more like they´re wandering around absolutely aimless. That being said I am only like 30 episodes into the first season..
If it would be the other way i would say SAO as its hated by a lot ppl while i love it. Hmm so for anime that are liked by many and i dislike it hmm... i would say hack//Sign, i hate it i rated it a 1/10, theres probably only one or two more anime which ive rated with a 1/10, so belive me when i say this anime pissed me off.
