After watching this E3 I noticed how many people were saying things like “dogshit game” or “PS3 Graphics” towards things like Elden Ring and even a couple minutes ago towards BOTW2 and even if a lot of it is bait, I just wanted to ask just how much do you value graphics and how much it can be held over style or creative design, personally I emulate a bunch of older PS2, Gamecube, etc. games so it barely really matters to me, but I would like to hear Anilist’s thoughts.
Also hope this post doesn’t sound too gamer gatekeepy I’ll respect any opinions brought into this thread
It's nice to the eye, but it's far from being really important
It could be a bit weird at the beginning if the game as old graphics (when it's not old), but after a few hours, minutes I wouldn't notice it at all. Maybe when I've complete the game, I could be like "It's a shame the graphics where bad... Well, whatever"
Just like Dishonored (the first one)
So I'd say, having amazing graphics in an amazing game is really enjoyable, having bad one in a amazing game is a shame but I would still play and enjoy the game, and good one in a bad game wouldn't change anything
Personally, I've always been a PC gamer but the graphics, although important, are not the MOST IMPORTANT element for me.
The first reason for me is that I always prefer FPS, I prefer a game in medium-low that runs at 60 FPS than a game in 4K that runs at 30-40 FPS or less. (I think this reflex comes from the fact that I don't play on extremely expensive computers so I have to deal with it)
The second reason is that for me: a video game is an experience, so the gameplay, the narration, the rhythm counts as much or much more than the graphics. At the moment I'm playing all the assassin's creed, Unity for example is beautiful but behind it is empty so I didn't really like it.
I understand afterwards the players who are very punctilious, they want to use the potential of their machines to the maximum then sometimes they have big hopes on the graphics, sometimes too big....
(sorry if I make mistakes in English, it's not my native language)
Its not that important at this stage.
In the future when we have an more robust type of technology that puts us on the next level it might be renewed for now its mostly about not dropping the frame rates than what the graphics are.
If anything updating older titles would be where i'd consider it more an issue to porting past titles.
The issue with people seeing it during e3 is that they forget that these 4k 1440 visuals are being broadcasted at 1080p at best, so they don't look as good as they would anyway. Better to wait and see it on youtube in 4k yourself before people jump on the ps3 graphics bandwagon.
However consoles and tech have prioritized frames and high fidelity, so graphics are much more important to most people nowadays.
I enjoy a good looking game as much as anyone, a la Forza, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying older games, and games on the switch!
people who care about graphics in games are fucking idiots. games have never truly been about looking at pretty stuff, its always been gameplay that keeps people coming back. you can actually see this with metroid dread that was recently announced, people are saying its bad because it looks like a 3ds game, whilst also ignoring that it's the most innovation the franchise has seen since metroid prime.
these people should go back to watching movies and stop infecting this medium with their sinkhole brain attitude
It depends on a lot of things. If the main focus of the game is to look nice, then yeah it should look nice. But other than that, I don't give a rats ass about graphics in game, sure it's nice to see and it's nice to look at, but if a game has great story, characters and has great gameplay and mechanics, then I don't care at all.
People watching conferences like E3 who say things like these, would say them even if the game looked out of this world. Judging a game from a trailer without seeing how it plays and going through the story is absolute bullshit and I turn off the chat anytime I watch E3 and other conferences like it.
The game's genre and how it's played should influence a game's graphics.
For example COD, a gritty FPS that's fast-paced. Realistic graphics to accommodate the war vibe.
For example Slime Rancher, a farming simulator in a fantasy future with slimes. Stylized graphics with bright colours and cute characters to accommodate it.
If you were to switch these two's graphics, they still would be games that play and function as intended. But a gritty FPS with cute characters and bright colours? It doesn't fit. (Unless it's a joke game.)
At this point this is rambling but I hope you can get something from this.
As a hardcore gamer, I look past the graphics. I have a bunch of pixel art games, I wish people would appreciate these more. Most people see metroidvania games and say it’s “old” or “crap” just because it’s pixelated.
Don’t mind it.
Edit: Oh yeah, here’s another one. 2D games are instantly considered shit by many people which I think is just ridiculous.
At the end of the day, people who got something negative to say tend to comment something than people who like the game. I just thumbs up and gone.
