So this got announced, how do yall feel about it and do you think that it will take place in any of the already established time lines?
Here is the website sunrise created for this project: https://en.gundam.info/about-gundam/series-pages/witch/
Gundam Build Divers was in 2018 so it hasn't been 7 years
I think this is more referring to mainline Gundam TV shows. Build Divers isn't exactly part of that section of the franchise, focusing more on Gunpla than integration with these shows. It has been 7 years since IBO which was the last such standalone in the franchise, and if I recall correctly, before that came 00.
Technically the last time we had a "mainline" Gundam TV show was Kidou Senshi Gundam Unicorn RE: 0096 in 2016.
Build Divers was as much mainline as IBO was, since both are set in alternate universes to the main Gundam timeline (as is this new show)
Would any Gundam AU really count as mainline? I guess with all the Build shows being much more light-hearted, it doesn't make much sense to me to lump them in with stuff like 00 and IBO. Although with regard to Unicorn, I somewhat agree - albeit Wikipedia states:
[Suisei no Majo is] the fifteenth mainline entry in Sunrise's long-running Gundam franchise, succeeding Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans.
I think with regard to Unicorn, that is also not exactly an original show - it's based on source material and also takes place in UC I think? 00, IBO, Reconguista in G etc. all take place in their own timelines and defined time periods. The Build series also takes place in our century which further differentiates them.
Ah yes Wikipedia, the most reliable source of all.
Also I never said Unicorn was an original show. It was a TV edit version of the Gundam Unicorn OVA series.
If we want to make up the meaning of words then yes, IBO was the last "mainline" Gundam series.
Though the OP said it was the "last TV series" which is factually incorrect and what my original reply was saying.
G Reco takes place after Universal Century. It's called the Regild Century.
I think the distinction here is Build shows are all grouped together so they aren't included as seperate entries into the franchise. It's same how IBO season 1 and 2 aren't 2 different entries and same with Seed and Seed Destiny.
Basically, G Witch is in it's own universe and not a sequel so it counts as new because of those 2 while Build is in a an established universe and sub series.
I'm super happy for another stand alone. I was never able to get into the main Gundam time line, so if this spin-off is as good as IBO, I'm looking forward to it.
You should watch
Kidou Senshi Gundam THE ORIGIN
as it is a prequel to everything in the UC timeline. I personally think it is the best too.
As Mecha anime have dropped in quality and popularity, I am glad and hopeful to see a new Gundam entry.
Sunrise have kept 2D mecha alive. Sadly mecha "fans" are extremely critical so this really relies on the casual anime audience.
That is an interesting way of saying "thousands of people have independently of each-other decided to hate on a good show because they are too critical". It is much more likely that the show was not good and therefore people didn't like it.
Sunrise has indeed released mechas over the years, including in recent years. But as I mentioned, mechas are not that popular anymore; even Sunrise has to make money from idol shows. In terms of quality, I can't say this for every show, but anilist alone shows pretty bad scores for any Gundam that is trying to be different than UC formula, say trying to sell Gunpla In my opinion Sunrise is trying to branch out to new fans, which doesn't work, while at the same time leaving existing fans in the dust. Existing fans want shows from UC or similar, but those are not that popular with kids, nor with the modern anime fans who wants self-insert isekai and action shounen.
That is why I hope this new TV Series would appeal to new people too, rather than just existing fans.
Talking about mecha fans shitting on Sunrise when they are the only people keeping 2d mecha alive. Being overly critical here is to say that Witch from Mercury is 3DCG. Weird to say but being contrarian will kill the genre completely. The reality is things need to be shilled to some extent even if they aren't masterpieces. See 86 for example.
I did not say mecha fans are shitting on Sunrise, but simply that fans not liking a bad show is not the fault of the fans. If anything fans want Sunrise to succeed, you know, to get more Gundam.
Not sure why you need to argue about 2D vs 3D, because I didn't even go there. I don't even care as long as it doesn't look bad; some shallow people do care. "Shows from UC" timeline have a certain degree of grittiness, geoplitical/economical drama, dark realism, interesting flawed characters, but also some level of superpowers and nonsense, which I think is what Gundam fans want, from a Gundam show. Shows can do what they want though, and might be liked by few fans, be disliked for being bad, or become popular, 86 became popular, but is not even a Gundam show, nor by Sunrise.
Criticism is not shitting on a show or the studio; it instead comes from a place of love and wanting the studio to make a better show in the future. They are people who do shit on a show though, and they are not helping anything or anyone.
