Fairly self-explanatory question that just crossed my mind as I was checking out my own “Stats” page. AniList shows users how many titles they’ve completed per release year, as well as how many hours they’ve watched per release year. What release years have the most of each for you?
For me, I’ve finished more 2012 anime than any other year, but I’ve watched more hours of 2011 anime. I think the latter owes largely to having re-watched HxH 2011 the whole way through, and the former to the overlap of my peak seasonal-anime weebdom with my “I like shorts!” phase. What about you?
Edited for clarity
2014/2015, my stats page isn't 100% accurate as MAL didn't track dates reliably, and Anilist only autofill start date, I have to do end dates manually, so a lot is missing start/complete dates, but I can say without a doubt that it's 2014/15 as they're the 2 years when I was really into anime, been struggling to really get into anime since.
Sorry, the topic question was less straightforward than I thought. The dates I was asking about are actually for when the anime themselves released (“Release Year”), not for when you watched them. Those dates should be pretty precise, excluding any possible database mistakes. For example, if you were to watch FMA03 tomorrow, it would show up under 2003, not 2021.
I'm clearly misunderstood the topic, as there's 2 graphs, airing year and watch year, my bad.
No worries! Watch year would be a good question, too, if not for the issue you pointed out—one which affects me as well. I have basically no idea what accurate start/end dates would have been for anything I saw before joining AL. I actually try to just delete the start and end dates for everything I watch now, because I’d rather have no graph than a wildly inaccurate one, but the joke’s on me because I still have dates on shows but no idea which ones, lol.
The release year that I've completed the most anime from would be 2014 with 66 titles.
The year where I watched the most hours would be 1999 but a large chunk of that came from watching One Piece so I'm not going to count it. The second highest is in 2004 which comes from bleach and sgt. frog. Then is 2007 with Naruto Shippuden. In 4th comes 2014 with 327 hours.
Looking over the list reminded me of all the anime that had more than 24 episodes and I kinda miss that. I understand why they changed it to 12 to ~24 episodes a season and I'm sure many new/old anime fans prefer it that way.
Highest by count... is 2023.
Even though I only started watching seasonals that summer, each succeeding winter has had at least one show that aired the previous year – 2024 winter notably having two two-cour 2023 autumn shows – and that autumn season... also netted one more than usual due to various circumstances.
And off-season watches are plentiful – Oshi, High Card, BokuYaba, Tomo-chan, Sugar Apple... even with the shockingly high number I've caught up on this year there's still so much from then I have on my planning too–
Yeah, not surprised.
With a count of 41, that's six more than second highest (2024) and... on the one hand, 2023's count includes a short and four movies, on the other 2024's count includes six movies of its own and two OVAs... I think watch time would go to 2023?
Yup, 205 hours from 2023, while 2024... is merely third (160 hours).
I thought the two cour shows would weigh in somehow, but both years actually have two two-cour shows and one single cour show that I have one rewatch on. It tilts one episode to 2023's favour...~ (28 + 24 + 24, versus 26 + 25 + 24)
Edit: Dammit I keep forgetting about rewatches first I remembered was the 2024 one I referred to then the 2023 one... then I remembered there was another 2024 one I already rewatched... aand though I don't seem to have forgotten any other rewatches, I forgot Niehime was two cour ^^' that... means the maths are 28 + 24 + 24 + 24 and 26 + 25 + 24 + 24.
still the same
Second by watch time is... sigh unsurprisingly as it is the home of two 13 episode seasons I have watched in full three times and a 15 episode season I have seen twice, 2020...~
