Did anyone find it hard to keep up with subtitles when they started watching Anime or with some specific Anime. I watch Dub always when possible so I haven't got used to sub, but I remember having to watch Bunnygirl on my 6.5inch phone I found it kinda hard to keep up and kept pausing when they spoke fast a sentence. I have to swap from dub to sub in One Piece at four emperors saga. So I wanted to know if its easy to get used to sub after watching dubbed for 2000 eps of anime
I didnt find it hard to keep up with because I first strated watching anime in sub. Got to the point where dub sounded kinda cringe, but I guess these days they are better. But when I first was still new to anime and tried to watch Bakemonogatari, it definitely was too fast for me, so fast that I had to quit it and come back to it later on when I was more experienced.
You get use to it with time, just like you get use to riding a bicycle without training wheels.
i'm usually pretty good at reading the sub without any issues, but recently when i was watching the fate series i did have to rewind like 10 seconds a few times to reread some things. I know some people have adhd and cant focus too much on sub but i'm perfectly fine with sub and dub and don't usually have any issues
depending on the show sometimes i still will have to pause to read, like if they're talking really fast or there's a lot of text on-screen but generally it's not a problem
first time i ever watched subbed anime i was so slow at reading it my dad had to read the subtitles out loud for me (i was babby) but i think that's how i got faster at reading so u definitely do get better at it with experience
It depends on the show for me. I watch mostly dub too but that's because I typically dislike Japanese voice acting. But there are a few exceptions for me so I'll talk about those. There are many where I don't have any issues whatsoever. Hunter x Hunter, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Grave of the Fireflies are good examples of those. It feels no different to me than watching something in English with English subtitles on. It takes me like 5 minutes to get used to it if I haven't watched anything with subs in a while, but then I'm fine after that. However, there is stuff like The Tatami Galaxy where I actually can't even watch it. Those subs move so freaking fast. I'm a slow reader so I couldn't watch anything happening on the screen when they were talking. I couldn't even read all the lines of dialogue. That severely hindered my enjoyment of the series which was frustrating because I liked a lot of stuff about it. So the rule for me is 5 minutes. If I can't do it well by that point, then the subs will get in the way of my enjoyment.
I actually started with dubs around the time i first got into anime (like 6-7 yo) and then moved to subs once i got into anime again a few years later. I will rewatch a show if the dub is available because i like to see the difference in translations but I've gotten so used to it, I'll always go with the sub first. For me, subs have always been a common thing since I enjoy english content far more than spanish content so since very early on I got used to reading subtitles + observing a scene at the same time. It's a little harder with anime since I don't speak japanese but still pretty manageable.
I only struggle to keep up when I'm not paying attention, including when I was watching anime from the full ep videos people upload on youtube.
I tend to pay a lot of attention to whatever I'm watching, though.
That being said, I tend to read a lot even outside anime, and subtitles often go significantly slower than I can read them so I have the opportunity to have a short lapse of attention (or 3-4s) without missing much.
