Could we introduce a feature to this site that would let us post other kinds of written work? Something other than reviews, status updates and discussions? Could there be, like, an Editorial section, where people could post more free-form work? Streams of conscious, theories, countdowns, stuff like that?
Somewhere we could post about trends, genre overviews and stuff like that, instead of just one specific anime, without it getting buried by the constant social activity?
Edit: To answer your question, I'm not sure how it would work. Maybe just a separate area where written work(with a minimum word count) would be treated like reviews, with the most recent works advertised on the front page, and not be buried by activity and status updates.
(This was posted as a status initially where I had asked them if they envisioned this as something that was more meant to be a section on a users profile or if it was intended to be linked to an entry, this is what their edit is responding to)
I'm not totally against this idea but I think it likely needs to be fleshed out a bit more for the devs to implement anything that might somewhat resemble what you have in mind.
Most examples of what I can think of for this could be done by making a status and linking that status in your about me or having it as a thread on the forums. Now I can imagine downsides to either of these depending on what you are wanting to write about, for example a link in an about me doesn't have a lot of visibility and a forum post shouldn't be for personal use and should have a focus on discussion with others.
Having a clear idea of what this would be used for and what it shouldn't be used for would be very helpful in having this become a reality.
It would probably be a good idea to have multiple people discuss this to flesh it out(IE, mod team) but for some examples of the kind of work that it might be used for, here's a link to some of my old blog posts.
to have multiple people discuss this to flesh it out(IE, mod team)
While yes, the mod team can hash out what this might entail, if users do not make it clear how they themselves envision some change or addition, there is no guarantee that it will turn out anything like what a user is wanting. Furthermore if a user truly wants to see a change happen, helping hash out those details or having other users hash out those details reduces the amount of energy and time have to spend on such and for a request like this there is little difference between a moderators thoughts and a users thoughts.
Frankly speaking, there are a million things I want to do as a moderator, If a user isn't willing to spend the effort trying to hash out the details of a request, then I see little reason to do so myself given there are countless other things that I would like to do in relation to the site. This is part of why we want users to make these requests as forum threads, it provides greater visibility so users can hash out potential issues and practical versions of the requests.
Sorry if that came off as ruder than intended, I wasn't trying to shirk responsibility or tell anyone how to do their jobs. If I'm being honest, I have no idea how ro ask the greater userbase for help in a way that they'll actually respond to. Reaching out to people is a huge weakness for me.
For me personally, I'd just like to have a way to make posts other than reviews, that are still basically the same length as reviews, and treated somewhat similar to the way reviews are treated. I just think it would give people more leeway to express themselves creatively.
this is the best idea ive seen in a long time
would love to see it happen
Care to elaborate? What would you like to see from this?
i would like to see a separate section at the top named editorial where people can post the things you said, like theories or more general written work thats not about a specific anime (maybe with a lower character count than reviews), I think it would be really cool to see what people write and I'm sure it would be a great addition to the site
I think stuff like this should just be allowed as forum threads. If it's long enough there's often stuff that people can discuss about the stuff mentioned.
I think if this was to be made good, it would be made with forums as a base, not reviews. Reviews, as they are now, are linked to a single media entry, while forums also still have a place to comment on the article which is a feature reviews don't have (I've posted a public message on someone's profile in response to their review before)... though that is something that should probably be added to reviews anyway. The main thing that this should have is just not getting bumped when someone posts a new comment, unlike with the forums, and with... a generally expected higher quality level of posts by having the minimum word count of reviews added to it and the like.
