i only have ten things and yes i am both new to anilist and anime in general i like mostly mystery thriller and drama stuff
Death Note
watch this its real good
Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba
this is also good but it dont have mystery and thriller concepts
Welcome to Anilist @Kentaurus!
Since you like drama, I can recommend these five (in no particular order, other than Your Lie in April is my favourite anime of all time):
Fruits Basket 1st Season (this one has 3 seasons)
Welcome to Anilist!
I have a few Drama that I can recommend, not many Thrillers though :(, not my cup of tea.
The Quintessential Quintuplets
The Quintessential Quintuplets 2
Dont let the "White Album 2" make you think you need to watch season 1, they are completely diffrent, both in characters and in story. Also, season 1 is just bleh, thats why I recommend only watching season 2. Although you shouldnt even call them "seasons" since they are completely diffrent animes.
Mixed feelings about Domestic-Girlfriend, I loved it in terms of Drama but I know people dislike it, its a personal taste.
This is probaly the best Thriller to exist in my opinion, it also has Drama!
This is a pretty dark Drama, I liked it but, its not for everyone, especially the art style in the anime.
The Promised Neverland
The Promised Neverland Season 2
And thats that!
Drama, if you want some long stuff

do you have any live action shows or books or movies to use as a sounding board?
I'll give some basic ones that I feel could resonate with most anyone but you can never know without a good grasp of the person in question. nothing reference heavy and appealing to someone not used to anime in general.
Majo no Takkyuubin
ghibli is usually always a good safe pick.
Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai
as much as I hate anohana I think its probably another easy sell to someone getting into anime. good story about loss with a dash of interpersonal drama between friends.
Kaiba
kaiba is more experimental wise in its visual style but it should still be appealing storywise.
I'm still going to go through some stuff and add it here later.
As @Vexem said, you really should try Higurashi, best horror/mystery anime that ever existed :
When They Cry
When They Cry Kai
When They Cry Rei
Higurashi When They Cry GOU
Higurashi When They Cry SOTSU
(don't pays attention to the bad scores of the last two seasons, they're way lower because most people didn't knew you had to watch all seasons in order to understand)
