We know anime right now is mainly shounen and isekais / power fantasies and escapism; which in their own right deserve to be here, but anime has been here for a while and people age (gasp) yes sienen has been popping up a little more often but they tend to stick to things like violence / r!p# / or straight up messed up, for messed up sake. I personally just want more anime catered to older audiences ie. (Aggretsuko).
Aside from that what anime tags/genre do you personally want to see more of or that you feel don't get as much attention as you think they reserve?
Shoujo-romance:
Even when they do adapt things, they rarely go beyond s1. Which sucks
because obviously things get real and plot develops deeper AFTER that.
This is even true of the following story ....
Fruits Basket was always brilliant. But the fandom only exploded because it
finally got a full adaptation. While maybe not to THAT extent, I believe similar
things would happen with other Shoujos easily if they just continued.
More animes set in college/university
E.g. Link Click, Run with the Wind, Free, Tokyo Ghoul, Yakumo.
It's just REALLY nice to have casts in my current age group now.
More extreme sports, I know there was SK8 but I feel like there's other series that can do the same idea even better with either snowboarding, skydiving or something similar in nature.
0.0 snowboarding would be cool, I did like Sk8 for the fact that they did include "what if you got hurt doing this dangerous thing" But i wouldn't mind series that take this literally and tack on 1-3 years of recovery time adding a lot of self reflection of the MC if its worth it to go back to it or not, real human emotion is what i crave.
i wonder why people want realistic workplace focused anime, aren't most of you already living the coerced labour life?
for me personally its mainly because anime tends to repeat only glorifying youth, and rarely when people truly start to understand what they really want out of life, its a form of realist self discovery and is heart warming for people 26+ age group
idk i'm almost 27 and i've found absolutely no meaning or value on a worker's life under a corporatist capitalist dystopia, but i guess it depends on your point of view
well thats where the fun bit comes in, why is it that these people are "stuck in this kinda job/workplace" what could they do to actually wake up with a smile on their face. Yes life will get us down but id rather see someone with an adult mentality take on these challenges, whether that being saving up to do educational advances on the side or taking out a loan to try and form a business that they have a major passion in. Then generic black haired protag going "yah know what life is better with bitches and they are all cool with me sleeping with all of them at once"
Well they are stuck there because you need money to buy food, water and shelter and if you don't the state will use their monopoly on violence to keep you away from these essential needs.
If you have to chose between labour and homelessness you are just a glorified slave to the system, working to satisfy artificial demands in a completely useless job.
Eh what's an adult mentality? It's just a series of coping mechanism so you can have a part in the make believe game of society under liberal capitalism, i don't see any value in having that kind of mindset.
Sorry but as someone who worked 16 hours a day to earn 900 euros a month i don't see the appeal, now if we are talking about working in an egalitarian working place, where workers own and use the means of production directly i could be on board.
Actually ye gimme more anarchist/communist animes, or just anime set in the distant past following the daily lives of long dead animals, or complete mindfucky and pointless animations.
sorry i offended, was not my intention, i mainly wanted to fancy the idea of seeing someone climb up the ladder of BS to be able to solve some of those issues with their higher status. Yes in reality this is far out of reach of people, but the idea of fantasies and disconnects is what a decent slice of people watch anime/shows for; me included. I understand that this would not be a concept that everyone can get behind and once again i am sorry that this situation isn't the best for most.
While I agree with your sentiment, maybe having more shows with a primarily adult working cast could give us more anime that explore our dystopia from the point of view of the workers who suffer under it. This could also give us more series with anti-capitalist messages, and we sure need more of those in anime.
I would like to see more Yuri adaptations with more adult centered stories, like the last time we got more than 2 yuri anime in the same year was 2018 and all were school base stories, there's a lot of variety in yuri manga but idk why studios think there are only high school romance
@Manol028 honestly agreed. I think there's too much infantilizing that goes on in yuri... as though sexuality is an "experimentation" thing in youth that wlw ultimately "grow out of" ??? One day, maybe we'll get an adaptation of literally anything by Ebine Yamaji. I would also LOVE, LOVE to see Kakeochi Girl animated!!
Better and unproblematic yaoi romance stuff. I mean it doesn't have to be romance per se, but you know what I mean.
How can it be yaoi and not romance?????
@thrivingmedkid I like to think we're moving in that direction... slowly, but getting there in recent years!
Josei is such an underappreciated demographic, we need more adaptations of josei manga out there.
it really is underappreciated like you said; honestly makes me a little sad that anime these days is just dude swings sword gets women; bring on the awkwardness and drama that comes from can i see a good life with him/her/they/etc, a well established coming of age story from the eyes of women would be absolutely amazing and refreshing to the current slog fest that is out
I just thought about this yesterday lmao
My take on this:
I wish there were less Battle Shounen, Isekai and School Romcom shows. Of course, these shows have an audience, which is why they make them in the first place. Many anime watchers are kids and teens, and many of these shows appeal to them (obviously, some adults like them too). However, I feel like there's a shortage of more mature series. It would be nice if the anime industry started catering more toward adults. Sure, if you target younger audiences, you can advertise toys, games and other merch, but let's not forget that many adult anime fans also like to buy these things, and they're the ones who have the money to buy anyway.
I would say the genres that need more attention are Sci-fi, Mystery, Thriller and Psychological, starring adult MCs from any age group (this way, an older audience could picture themselves more easily in the MCs' shoes). Some subgenres/tags: Cyberpunk, Space, Crime Drama/Noir, Politics and War (can be both Sci-fi or Historical), etc. Just personal preferences though, I know some of these are not very popular nowadays, but yeah, would be cool to see one or two series from these genres come out every season. On the other hand, just one or two less from the other genres. Can we get this trade-off? We get some more mature shows, while fans of Isekai still get a lot of their favorite genre/subgenre lol
I wouldn't mind having more mature Isekai shows tho (no annoying fan service and ecchi, no absurd powers just because you're the protag who got reincarnated after being run over by truck-kun, just a well-made story). Another thing we need more of in anime is a non-comedic portrayal of spicy scenes, if you know what I mean. Oh and I'd like to see the return of manly MCs (not in every single show, otherwise it would get as annoying as the wimpy MCs we get so much of nowadays).
I want more proper adventures and a feeling of true exploration, preferably in the style of something like Breath of the Wild. To be a little more specific; many anime have the main character(s) traveling around to different places and discovering new areas, but you almost never feel a sense of accomplishment when they do, and the areas are rarely impressive or have a "wow-factor" to them.
Just look at stuff like Naruto, Hunter x Hunter, Overlord, Tensura, etc. How many places do you actually remember the layout of, or details about them that aren't related to the plot? Sure, you got Greed Island, Konoha, Nazarick, etc., but there really isn't anything exciting about those areas that isn't connected to the development of the story that happens within them.
I want more shows like One Piece and Mushoku Tensei, even movies like Castle in the Sky and Spirited Away; shows where it actually feels like the characters are going on a proper adventure and exploring cool, unique and memorable new locations. No more boring towns, dungeons and grass fields that look identical, no more glossing over the adventure and jumping straight to the location. The best parts about One Piece are when the crew are sailing around on their ship and discovering new and exciting locations. Just think back to the joy of finding out about an island in the sky, an island underwater, etc. for the first time. In Mushoku Tensei (so far in the anime at least, I haven't read the novels), the locations might not be very memorable or distinct, but the adventure to get from place to place is thrilling and exciting to watch. There are so few shows that give me this feeling. Even in manga it is hard to find.
The reason I specifically mentioned Breath of the Wild as a point of comparison, is because I have never before had an experience quite like it, one where every time you discover something new, it feels incredible. There are so many unique and memorable locations, and the journey and adventure you go through to do it is a huge part of the experience. I also mention that game specifically because I would love more shows with a protagonist that works alone. Nearly all "adventure", "isekai", etc. shows rely very heavily on boring side characters with no personalities. I would much rather focus on fleshing out the protagonist while he travels around by himself, just like Link, and visits different cultures, lands and locations in general where he meets other people, learns about them and then leaves for new locations. Something like Mushi-Shi or Kino's Journey, but on a much larger scale, and preferably not episodic.
I hope other people feel the same way.
my taste is trash so I like the popular stuff anyway
I want more stuff that's based around a niche activity or hobby, and goes in-depth into how it works. There's a ton of that stuff out there, but stuff like chihayafuru, runway de waratte, houkago saikoro club, koisuru asteroid... Anything to really make me feel like I can understand what makes you want to do that activity. I particularly want to see things that are actually uncommon, because there's tons of random hobbies that are cool and it'd be great to see a show about them.
This probably will come as no surprise considering my taste, but I'd really love to see more series focused on politics, ideology and philosophy, military strategy, and battle tactics (basically more Code Geass and Legend of the Galactic Heroes).
Also it'd be really interesting to see more romance anime with protagonists who are passionate about a specific hobby or activity (like Your Lie in April or Hi Score Girl). I personally love to see the romance develop as a consequence of the characters' passion for what they do, and feel like this gives the story a really strong energy that pushes it forward.
political intrigue (like rose of versailles/logh kinda?)
historical setting
better lgbt rep
Yup, we sure need more of those.
Also, maybe you'd be interested in this, since it fits all three categories
Requiem of the Rose King
The production value is really low (I usually don't care about this stuff too much, but even I notice), and I can't guarantee the story will remain interesting since it's still airing, but I'm enjoying its themes and plot at least. Tho I have the constant feeling that the manga might be a better experience, I'm just too lazy to go check it out rn.
Definitely Shoujo and Josei! There are so many great manga out there from those categories that really deserve to be adapted – and done well.
idk more cute boys doing cute things? i see a lot of girl ones and i suppose it’d make sense there’s be more. but the vibe of the boy ones appeal
more to me and i think end to be some of my favorite shows
i also agree with another commenter here about shojos continuing. most of those really do just stop after season one and most of those season ones are just 12 episodes which really sucks because there are a lot of good shojos out there that because of this don’t reach their full potential
