I've never really been a fan of Mecha's but I have watched Darling in the Franxx and Knights & Magic which technically is part of the Mecha genre. If you have watched the series already. do you think someone like me who barely even touched the genre enjoy the series?
Some friends and YouTubers have been saying that the series is "good" but I don't know what that "good" is.
I always considered Evangelion an anime classic you must watch, and that's mostly the reason I watched it. Since I've never seen 'deep' anime's like these, I too easily wrote Shinji off as a stupid character, but I kept watching. It was too much to handle for me when I finished the series. I had to watch reviews/analysis videos because I couldn't comprehend what I had just seen in the series version. The Rebuilds in my eyes are a timeline of how things could have turned out. If you're really motivated to watch the show, start with Evangelion, and the End of Evangelion. If you still want more then continue with the rebuilds.

The following words are out of my reflection of the show, I wrote it a few days ago, but it's not yet finished:
Shin Seiki Evangelion
Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu
Urusei Yatsura
In the anime community you will be expected to have an opinion of the 3 anime above more than any other and you will be judged by that opinion.
Watching them or not is optional but having an opinion is mandatory.
I think it's worth a try, but I'd also let you know that basically any mecha show after 2000 thats not got Gundam in its name is probably less interested in the mechs themselves than you'd expect. I've pretty much settled into Neon Genesis just being okay, but if your interested in weird magic and gore, RahXephon goes a lot further, and its just as weirdly horny.
