This didn't really feel like it came from Shaft tbh, guess we'll get more of Hiroshi Nagata's flashy flashy sakuga

Where's my Monogatari Shaft?
let rwby fucking die already. jesus fucking christ
and now we have the Urobutcher writing, great
Ruby is at its' most popular right now lol
is it really? i don't use the internet much outside of anilist but i haven't heard much from the series since vol 4/5
Since then, it's got an anime fighter crossover, a DC comic line, a crossover with the Justice League, several manga, and small references in mainstream movies (Doctor Sleep and Ready Player One)
Volumes 7-8 are particularly much higher in quality than the show has ever seen as well so I'm hoping this ends up being good
Never watched RWBY before because I've always heard mixed reviews and also because it's CG (I cannot stand watching CG anime). Is this something entirely new? Will I understand it if I watch just this?
Original is great. Yes the CG from volume 1-3 is shit but it gets extremely better from after that. With this one I think they would follow a different route as the name suggests and the trailer hints. Original follows Ruby Rose which is still continuing, this one probably will follow Weiss Shnee. Or it might just get a new storyline.
I'm not 100% sure on the details because all the info I had before the trailer completely contradicts what the trailer implies, but there's only a few possibilities in my opinion:
Option 1: It's a full remake of Volume 1
If this is the case, I don't really see how it could be worse. Volume 1 has its charm (and is also probably my favorite volume from the few I've seen?) but it's definitely extremely rough around the edges. A friend told me there was no way it could be Volume 1 since it was originally so short, but stretching it out to give time for some MUCH needed character development is exactly what Volume 1 needs. Obviously it'll take a good amount of work to match Monty Oum's action direction but outside of that I can't see it being worse in any way.
Also, since the world was not at all developed during Volume 1's production, it'd be a great opportunity to retcon a lot of stuff to make it sensical given all the information given in later volumes.
Option 2: It's a canon remake of Volume 1 until a divergence at some point
Alternatively, they could just take the Volume in a completely different direction. With the same setup, a different story could certainly be told - I like Penny, but she and Sun's introductions at the end of Volume 1 were pretty out of nowhere a better story could probably have been told without those characters. I don't really see this as being that likely but it's still something to consider.
Option 3: Trailer is bait, it's a completely different show, set in its own AU
This is what I thought was happening before the trailer dropped, because the website and name ("Ice Queendom") very much implied some insane Winter-locked Remnant. Maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part, since my favorite part of RWBY was always the character designs and never the world they established. Still, it's an interesting idea and if I were in charge that'd be the route I take.
In the original Rooster Teeth didn't work scenes out with Monty or after he passed. Which meant that Monty just animated a fight scene however he wanted it and the RT would have to work around it without context. That's why RWBY doesn't have a proper story. When it branches off I'm sure it will be coherent enough to be an actual story. There was a manga from 2017 that gave insight on the characters' backstories so it'll probably include that as well, the title kind of begs it.

RWBY has been one of the most heartbreaking experiences in film that I have grown up through. I fell in love with its idea and style as a kid through the early season but started to be disappointed more and more as time went on. It just kept leaving such a bitter taste in my mouth as time and time again it trampled over its potential. I seem not to be the only one as somehow this 2 and a 1/2 hour video has nearly 5 Million views going over these same issues https://youtu.be/81fdKWOHrdE and isn't the only one out there.
I really hope this new version can bring the series some new justice but I'm a little iffy after the trailer and hearing that is going to be a non-cannon diverging plot. I'm curious to see how other people feel about it but I guess only time will really tell. I really hope to see this show being able to keep its original charm while burning out its flaws and flushing out the great ideas
A little edit: My thoughts on the trailer are a bit better now knowing it was to mirror the original trailer https://youtu.be/BAiGmxT2cgI. Originally it felt a bit out of date and touch to me but that explains it.
Also, check out some images of their new outfits. Definitely going to be quite different than the original series https://preview.redd.it/l1f8z5oqmfp81.jpg?width=640&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=5ba56c3567a4f3ca695fbb8808111fa404367f53
The 2D style doesn't feel right, but if the story holds up, I can get over it.
I totally agree about all of the missed potential in RWBY. I always felt that the antagonists were all poorly written and evil just because. The only baddy that I liked was eaten within seconds of his character starting to be developed. I hope his potential was tasty.
