"I liked the ending of 3.0+1.0 because the original was frustrating."
"The Rebuilds were better but you should watch the original first."
So did you feel satisfied with its ending because of the story and world building of the original? Would you have been less satisfied if the ending of the original was better than what you experienced? The Rebuilds feel like an attempt to fix NGE, but also not be a copy, in a way that it's a better ending, but you also need to get to the end of NGE to watch (the better) End of Eva, so I'd recommend watching the full series. But if you liked the remake more, then why would you (if you would) recommend watching NGE and EoE first?
The OG version ends on a sad note, while the new version ends on a happy note. That's all.
I think there's no problem in watching rebuilds alone, it's not really necessary to watch the series and EoE to enjoy rebuilds, but EoE will be a very different experience compared to the rebuild.
The original series+movie was a big fuck you to the anime industry, while the rebuild movies were a big fuck you to the fans. And that last part works both as a compliment or an insult.
So, while I'm not against people watching the rebuilds first, getting the original experience definitely adds to the ride and is recommended.
without 200 iq the og series is too complex to appreciate right away. you have to question everything and dig deep and even when you do it ends up being a story that you didn't want it to be; as perfect as it was.
the rebuilds give you a more traditional ending where you don't have to think about it. however, I still give it minus points for picking the wrong girl >>
honestly seeing all 3 "endings" for this masterpiece is a must. now if only I could get 1.11 on blu ray without selling my kidney that'd be the icing on the cake
P.S. long haired rei will be the death of me. too fucking cute
I loved all of it. The whole series of Evangelion, from the OG Series, EoE, the manga, the Rebuild Movies, etc. are my favorite pieces of fiction ever. I don't think at all one that one was supposed to "fix" the other or whatever. I think each entry had its own thing they wanted to go for, and aside from some flaws in the Rebuilds, I think they both executed incredibly. I'm glad I watched and read all of it.
I did not manage to enjoy the Rebuilds BC the original exists.
I think i would've liked the last Rebuild movie if it did not try to ""answer"" themes from the og, and instead just did its own thing entirely, like with 3.0 completely changing the plot.
But now 3.0+1.0 is some incoherent mess of a movie, that technically can be watched without prior knowledge, but really shouldn't be, because of all the self referencing.
Like u can understand the ending better if u have seen all previous NGE installments, but it doesn't make it any fun to watch.
The only good thing the rebuilds did is give me the deadbeat dad that Misato always had the potential to be,
No. In fact, it's the opposite for me - I can enjoy the original series more because the rebuilds were made.
The first 2 movies were fine. New character in the second movie, aight, let's see where they go with that (Nowhere, as it turns out).
Third movie happens. Absolute shock on my end. What the hell did I just watch? And why the thinly veiled nonsense about a "curse of evangelion" in order to cater to the pedophiles who can't handle looking at anything but supposed 14-year old girls in formfitting bodygloves?
So my anticipation for the final movie was already soured, figuring they can't write their way out of this mess. And they couldn't. Mari is still there with absolutely no background and worse, no character motivation. Just there to sing through exposition and turn everything into a joke.
While I did appreciate the stuff with Kuronami trying to find her humanity in the village, it's ruined by nonsense like the waves of trillions of angel/evangelion hybrids, being defeated by 1.5 evangelion. Remember the original series, or even the first 2 movies, where they had massive problems fighting just 1 angel with 3 evangelion?
So yea, like I said, I appreciate the original series + EoE much more now.
My favourite ending was that of the rebuilds but I definitely wouldn't have liked it as much if it wasn't for the world building of the original. I started watching the rebuilds with someone who hadn't seen the original (big mistake, I didn't realise how much they left out) and they didn't like it because they couldn't understand what was going on.
Since NGE is longer there is more they can reveal about the world and characters etc. so definitely watch that first, otherwise the rebuilds would be pretty boring.
Eva was the first proper anime I watched (circa 2010ish on Youtube when I should have been revising for exams lol), but tbh I can't really remember the ending all that well (rewatch defo due) so atm I can't compare that much.
That said I have enjoyed the remakes, but while visually stunning 3 and 4 pushed the story back into the realms of 'wut' again and I'm not entirely sure if I like the ending - a good ending is nice for sure, but just rewriting time and everything to have a straight no strings happy ending feels a little, i dunno, easy or cheap after all these years.
I personally do pefer the original Neon Genesis and End of Evangelion, but the franchise is fantastic on a whole.
I would definitely say any viewer would enjoy the Rebuilds more with prior knowledge of the series, as the Rebuilds do kinda expect you to know some previous things, afterall a lot of plot points carry over. But the Rebuilds will knowledge check you a bit as there are certain things they dont go into that was covered in the original, so I personally feel like certain parts of the world building were missing. It also expects you to have a bit of an understanding of the general rules or conventions of their universe that they established in NGE, so they frequently show you something very vague, but expect you to figure it out thanks to your prior knowledge (afterall they're assuming their audience already know a lot and dont want to bore/patronize them). Certain characters in the rebuilds dont have their job's explained so you're not sure who they are or what they do unless youve watched the original, and there's pleanty of examples but they would go into spoilers.
