this isn't a review, but more of a question,
after watching the first two episdoes of Tokyo Ghoul:re I feel like things are taking a really horrible turn.
I'm not sure how to explain it, I loved the op side of the MC when he went 100% Ghoul mode (white hair) and was a complete badass.
and Tokyo Ghoul:re, I feel like the story, Changed? well anyways. how is Tokyo Ghoul:re 2 looking like? I saw the cover, he looks back to his old badass self, but not sure if I should start there or handle watching Tokyo Ghoul:re?
TL;DR
does the MC return to his badass/OP personality in Tokyo Ghoul:re 2? and is Tokyo Ghoul:re worth watching, even tho the current story isn't looking so good?
(Note: this is purly my opinon, I know most people enjoyed the show.)
Don't. Just don't.
Read the manga if you must, the anime is horrendously atrocious and not worth your time. It completely foregoes any logic or reason and just adapts random chapters expecting the viewer to figure out what is going on by themselves. Most people watching it don't like it either, I don't know where you got that idea.
I have yet to see a viewer of this anime (who hasn't read the manga) who even understands what is going on, because trust me the anime does not let you figure that out.
It is not worth it. I repeat, it is not worth it.
Heck, it hasn't even been worth it since Root A since that was a trainwreck too, but tokyo ghoul:re managed to surpass even that and go full on brain fart mode.
I implore you to read the source material if you really care about the story, but don't give the anime any more of your precious time, you are better than that and don't deserve studio pierrot insulting your intelligence as a human being.
The only good season of the anime was the first season in my opinion. The conflict and themes in the rest of them are poorly thought out and boring.
This is my opinion as an anime-only guy, so I don't have any feelings about the source that are clouding my judgement of just the anime.
:Re is an attempt to recapture what made Tokyo Ghoul popular: being torn between two sides. In the first season, it was Ghoul and Human which graduated into the broader theme of limbo - between life and death. In :Re, they need to give Kaneki amnesia so he can grow attached to the investigators as comrades and family, so the original conflict can be recaptured.
Personally, everything after the beginning feels lazily written - as though the premise was conceived on its own without thinking about what comes after. This is probably why there has to be a :Re in the first place.
The second season of :Re is showing some interesting themes of redemption and forgiveness, linking nicely back to the first seeds of conflict from the beginning. It's just a shame that it's such a mess over all.
All said, I'm sure the manga for both TG and TG:Re are more consistent and better thought out, and because it's a pretty fresh spin on the whole vampire thing, I do plan to read them one day.
The thread "Is tokyo ghoul re worth watching?" and it's comments have been merged into this thread.

i finished root a a few weeks ago, and thinking about starting to watch re, since my friend said that re is amazing, well i don't really believe that cause a ton of people on the internet said that re is a garbage fire. Is that really true? i wanna hear you guys opinion without spoilers, thank you in anticipation!
out of all honesty, i say either watch the show then the manga, or only read the manga
i do recommend reading the manga if u have watched tokyo ghoul cos a lot changes between the two, but its up to you whether you just read the manga or watch the show. i think the differences between the manga and the show make people dislike it, but i couldnt be 100% on that since i havent felt like watching it.
The Tokyo Ghoul anime is good in many ways. Personally, I found the first season to be the only great season that I'd consistently recommend to anyone who is into the psychological/thriller/adventure genres. After the first season, the show is not bad, it's just not top tier. It's still good. Now Tokyo Ghoul :re is different from root in a handful of ways:
Here's one thing :re has in common with root and the first season:
The soundtrack is still phenomenal.
In the end, I'd still recommend you read the manga rather than watch the anime. If you do end up deciding to do that though, it's better if you watch the anime first before you read the manga, it's harder to watch the anime after reading the manga in my experience.
Never. It's trash, doesn't do any justice to the source material. As @cucumberturtle said, the soundtrack kicks ass.
