Well, the first reason why I even decided to watch this show was the Victorian aesthetic which I received in great quantity. Even though the whole story is built around an imaginative country in Europe, its culture and history were written incredibly well and believably, especially the occultist side of it, which was inspired by its actual rise during African colonisation. But the setting is not the only appealing part of Gosick.
First of all, this is a detective story which contains really well-constructed cases as well as some wack and obvious ones which are more like proto-cases before the main one in the story arc. The best thing about the detective part of the show is that it is not there just for fun, but to better tell the story of the country since pretty much every one of them is somewhat connected.
Secondly, Gosick's characters are actually pretty cool. The cast is not so diverse, but memorable nevertheless. The best one is for sure Victorique de Blois, but others like Cordelia, Kujou, Grevil, Brayan Roscoe, Cecil and others have their moments too. I can say that the Light Novel has done a better job at flashing them out, but that's unfortunately not a rarity.
And last, but not least is the atmosphere, this point is directly connected to the setting of the show, but one thing that intensifies everything about it is the music! From the masterpiece of the endings to pipe organ compositions, Gosicks ost is truly magnificent and for some reason, not a lot of people point it out.
That's gonna be it, I think I wrote a bit too much, but this is unsurprising, considering Gosick is one of the shows that I will not shut the fuck about. Anyways, I hope I made a good job at selling it!
Does it count if it's already on our planning list
@immadeviant
If so:

Otherwise:
Komi Cant Communicate
Komi Can't Communicate may seem a bit sluggish at times, and the side characters can be a wee bit suffocating, but Komi and Tadano's friendship and bond make all those minor grievances worth it for me because their chemistry is so wholesome and pure, it's so sweet to see them gradually becoming closer and closer, it's the highlight of the entire series for me
Texhnolyze is imo the absolute peak of Cyberpunk anime, at least from what I've seen. The themes it deals with and the impact it had on me personally cannot be understated, it has helped change my output on a lot of things since watching it. However, I cannot talk about it without mentioning that it is very much not a show for everyone and one you need to be in the right mood for. It is probably the darkest anime I've ever watched, it can be really slow and difficult to fully understand at times, and the cast of characters are intentionally extremely flawed with no one to really root for. Those were all positives in my eyes as it helps make for an extremely interesting cast with no real regard for who's in the right or wrong, just their own motives and how selfish those may or may not be. But not everyone likes that type of story telling so it's worth mentioning. If you can handle that what awaits you is one of the most unique and interesting worlds among the anime that I've seen. Incredible atmosphere, incredibly interesting and complex characters, and a story that leaves a lot to ponder but will affect you in some way.
I love large/ensemble casts because characters make or break a show for me, and Haikyuu has a great example of this. They're funny and entertaining to watch, and the show doesn't spend too much or too little time on any one character, giving all of them the opportunity to be seen and fleshed out well. Every character is memorable with their own personalities and quirks, and even the tropes that are reused from other shounen seem new when used with all the other characters. Plus the games themselves are just entertaining to watch, even if they get overdramatic or slow sometimes. You get each team's backstory, and some of them you feel bad for when they lose.
Are you looking for a romance anime with good comedy and good main cast? Then you may like it, Taiga imo is the best tsundere there is. The main character is likeable and side cast isn't extremely good like Oregairu but still bearable with some common clichéd characters but with spice. The other main competitors of the main female lead is actually likeable and the pacing is surprisingly fine. Well it maybe not the best romance anime out there but still is very decent show from today's romance shit shows. The opening and ending are enjoyable and few moments are iconic in my book.
@earphoneriot if you want to see a guy getting hammered (pun intended, you'll see) by his dead best friend's sister repeatedly, this is the show for you.
the main appeal of this show is that it's a lot of fun. the characters are likeable, it's more episodic, all having the same formula but the formula works very well, sometimes stretching into 2 episodes.
this show is like a comfort show for me (hopefully, will be for you too), where I don't have to constantly keep track of everything or be super focused rather I can chill and still enjoy the episode.
the show was made in the 80s so try not to judge it too harshly for some of it's humour. u like Ryo despite his proclivities bcz he immediately gets put down and he's a guy you can depend on in a pinch. supporting characters work well in what they are there to do and the stories all wrap up nicely.
hopefully I've convinced you to give it a try.
lemme know how I did, I'm not the most expressive person, so it was nice exp writing this for someone else
It's a mysterious show with a ethereal atmosphere, probably unlike anything/almost anything you've ever seen. It shows more than tell, but I think the questions raised are great to ponder over after you finish the anime. The characters are endearing, I found it very easy to symphatize with them. Overall, I think it's great when you are in a philosophical mood and wants something different
Probably the hardest among my favorites to recommend, not because it isn’t good but because not everyone jives with it. Personally, I was captivated watching these young men and women deal with the long term effects of their grief and guilt over the death of a close friend. They didn’t all work for me, but I think that’s part of the point: different people will handle these emotions in distinct ways, and just because we more closely associate with some of them shouldn’t make the others wrong or strange.
I also genuinely found the plight of Meiko riveting. Given that she’s basically a ghost who didn’t get to grow up with her friends and still loves them for the people they were, watching both her and them struggle with how they’ve changed because of her (as well as the glimpses at her family) are really what make the show work. She adds levity to a number of scenes, but given her status, she is continually a source of somber reflection every time she’s in the room. And yes, despite knowing how it would end, it’s still one of the most emotionally affecting endings I’ve seen in media.
Where people tend to differ on this is with the supernatural elements, often questioning how Meiko uses her presence in this world and how Jinta, the other MC who she appears to at the beginning, imparts her existence to others. I found it pretty organic, but not everyone will. It’s not the kind of series I’d necessarily recommend to everyone, but if you’re good with the premise and are down to be sad for a while (the music still makes me feel melancholy, but I love it), I think it’s a more than worthy watch.
Do any of the series that I have on my completed list seem to suggest that I would also enjoy this series? I tend to enjoy series that are grounded in realism and don't have too many supernatural aspects to them, but I can still tolerate supernaturalism as long as the setting maintains realism and it's not the characters themselves who have superpowers, it's only their surroundings that are supernatural (if that makes sense). For example, in Death Note, Light has a Death Note powered by shinigami beings, but he remains a normal human being, and the series takes place in real-world Tokyo.
@AmadisHail
Death Parade
you don't have any favorites so I picked from your 10s
Right, I forgot to mention that my 10s are essentially my favourites.
Death Parade is a series that I would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys psychological thrillers, I see that you have Death Note, Erased, Perfect Blue, and Paprika on your completed list so I think it's a safe bet that you'll end up enjoying Death Parade (Light Yagami actually appears in it, albeit in a very small and difficult to notice easter egg scene). The philosophical themes that arise throughout the episodes are very compelling and I think the last episode does a fantastic job of driving home a very important message.
Another good thing about Death Parade is that before you dive into it, you can test the waters by watching Death Billiards:
Death Billiards
Death Billiards is a short-length movie (about as long as an episode) that was released a couple of years before Death Parade came out, and it basically serves as a pilot for Death Parade, as Death Parade was produced due to the popularity of Death Billiards. You'll be able to gauge whether or not Death Parade will be a good fit for you by watching Death Billiards, as it does a good job of presenting the premise and all the elements of the series.
Easy recommendation. While many would compare this to a Digimon movie (Our War Game) that came out around the same time, I felt there was a lot to love here that was independent of that experience.
The whole thing begins rather unassumingly with Kenji being invited to participate in a birthday party for classmate Natsuki’s great grandmother and spirals into a near apocalyptic event pioneered by a computer virus using massive worldwide virtual reality world. What impressed me is that it never really lost the balancing act it was pulling off doing these two at the same time. The dynamics of Natsuki’s family are emotionally riveting and what starts off as a superficial attempt by Natsuki to appear as though she was in a committed relationship becomes about so much more. Meanwhile, beautifully animated and colorful scenes in the VR world complemented by high octane action and a ticking clock help ramp up the stakes.
It’s not a perfect movie by any means, and while I appreciated the stakes involved, the ramp up to it felt a bit rushed. That being said, it still worked for me, particularly as the movie always had time for smaller moments even as things approached their worst.
You like Grand Blue? Yuru Yuri?
Well the comedy in Jitsu wa Watashi wa soloes
If you like comedy, Jitsu wa Watashi wa is definitely a great read. I don't even mess with comedy like that, but I still loved it.
This manga had almost no boring chapters. They were all absolutely amazing.
And the principal will maybe be your favorite character

what tends to captivate me most in stories is when they can portray feelings of passion and create interesting bonds between characters- and this does both quite well imo! the two main characters have a relationship that may understandably make people uncomfortable (a teen girl with a crush on an older man) but it uses this as a jumping off point to explore reconnecting with dreams you gave up on and appreciating whatever period of life you are in. Since you seem to like some heartfelt slice of life stuff based on your favourites, it might be worth a shot!
@0liiver
Fruits Basket 2019
I have watched most of the stuff in your favs already and the only one from those that I didn't watch which seems interesting is this. I already have this on my ptw but maybe hearing you trying to sell it to me I may start it right now instead of later
Being the second season of Magi The Labyrinth of Magic I have to say that I recommend the complete series first. The reason why I recommend it is because it is one of the animes with one of the most interesting worlds and settings that I have seen in anime in general, based on elements from different mythologies and cultures (especially from the Middle East but with elements from other parts of the world such as China or the Roman Empire), but creating something interesting with them to create a very interesting power system such as the Magoi and the Rukh (which are also explained quite well in the series), all this with a plot that deals with political issues that reminded me of when I saw Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, which give the world of the series more richness, in addition to having quite interesting characters both in the main ones and in several of the secondary ones. Quite a unique series in my opinion.
@NovaZero
Bakemonogatari
Ive heard of this show a lot but I know nothing about it, curious if its worth watching
@NinjaVK
I’ve seen all of your favorites, aside from this one and Saiki K
Mob Psycho 100
Mob Psycho is about a teenager named mob who has psychic powers, but instead of being like a normal Shonen, he basically has god like powers.
The show focuses mainly on the characters. Mob could do anything he wanted, but he just wants to live a normal life and fit in at school, as he is a fairly emotionless and antisocial person. But because he bottles up all his emotions, if something emotional does happen it causes him to lose control of his powers and cause tons of damage.
The show is basically him trying to grow as a person and control his emotions.
He also has a mentor who helps him with this, although he is actually a conman pretending to be a psychic in order to use Mob's powers, but still manages to help Mob along the way..
The show has a bit of everything I'd say, as it's funny, has really good characters and development, has a plot and has action/fight scenes. Idk if I sold it well but I would definitely recommend it.
@Nomatix
The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya
Friend of mine watched this show and from what I could tell it was simultaneously one of his favorite and least favorite series that he's seen so i'm curious about it now
it was simultaneously one of his favorite and least favorite series
Haha that’s pretty funny because as someone who loves the series and is currently reading the source material I can totally see why he’d say that. I should preface by saying that Disappearance can’t really be watched without having seen the TV series. Basically the series is about Kyon, a young man who has grown to accept an ordinary life after wondering about supernatural happenings as a kid. Kyon begins high school and soon meets our titular character Haruhi Suzumiya. Simply put, the girl is eccentric. She is completely uninterested in normal people and is instead drawn towards aliens, time travelers, and other supernatural beings. Intrigued, Kyon and Haruhi begin talking and the two manage to hold a conversation despite their differences. Some days later, after Kyon indirectly sparked the idea, Haruhi decides make a new club called the “SOS Brigade” specifically for tracking down supernatural beings to hang out with. She then forces him to help form the club and find members. The series follows the schemes and misadventures of the Brigade which consists of Kyon, Haruhi and 3 other members who each hold a big secret from Haruhi. It was apparently rather popular in the 2000s. I love the series because it was my first anime and even today I find it a unique, funny, interesting and memorable watch with a lot of good qualities. I have the movie (Disappearance) in my favorites because I think it’s the best part of the series.
Oh yeah I know it's the movie that takes place after the show dw. He loved the movie and some of the spin off shows but he despised the show itself so I was just curious as to your thoughts on it, cus its always been a show I've kinda sorta had my eye on but never really had too much interest in it til he watched it.
Ahh I see. I’m aware I’m biased but I love the series! It’s admittedly a tough one from newcomers to get into but I can send you a picture I found to help clear up some potential confusion and questions you may have about the series.
I'm not opposed to harder to get into shows (see my love for shows like Boogiepop and Texhnolyze) though I get you mean the series as a whole instead of just the main show. If you want to send me the picture I'm sure it'll be useful if I ever decide to watch it :)
Personally, I prefer the chronological order. I don’t get why the person who made this felt the need to include that note about “many people feel this is how it should be watched” in regards to the broadcast order but aside from that I think this image is a helpful guide.
Haibane Renmei, much like Texhnolyze, was very much a show that had a profound effect on me. It's a show I'd best describe as therapeutic. It has this immaculate atmosphere that even though it's only been a few months since I first watched it it felt very nostalgic, no doubt because of its spectacular soundtrack too. But that's only part of the appeal, as it has a mysterious yet captivating world and an incredible cast of characters. And that comparison I made to Texhnolyze wasn't just because both were worked on by ABe. Both shows deal with some pretty heavy subjects, but whereas Texhnolyze prefers the "beat you down" method, Haibane Renmei goes the opposite approach and wants you to realize there's always a light at the end of the tunnel and is far more optimistic. It's imo the best slice of life show I've seen so far and one I hold in extremely high regards.
I also cried both times I've seen the show if you want to know how much of an effect it had on me. I'm usually not a crier but Haibane hit me hard as the overall message of the show is one that resonated deeply with me.
This is probably the hardest anime in my favorites to recommend. Not because it’s bad obviously but because it’s fairly old and niche. It’s also very long (I myself haven’t even finished it). This series is an episodic comedy show about a race of talking alien frogs who attempt to invade Earth but they screw it up and are instead "held hostage" by individual humans/families whom they co-exist with. I know comedy is subjective but it's one of if not the funniest anime series I've ever watched. There were some jokes that were so funny I actually had to pause the video because I was laughing so hard. The characters themselves are also nice and the music is good (especially the first ED). Admittedly, much of the appeal for me is the English dub (which I know is not everyone's cup of tea). I’d recommend it if the concept sounds amusing to you and if you are cool with the aesthetic of a mid 2000s TV anime.
As you have probably noticed, I rate things really highly, even stuff that isn't in my favorites (like this). If I had to rate this properly I'd say its around 9/10.
Well, on to the selling. It's a fun read. The art is, quite frankly, amazing (I love the eyes lol). It's mostly centered around the characters though, landscapes aren't a focus. But it works. It's nice to see Akasaka focus on story while Yokoyari Mengo illustrates, I find that it works really well and that the writing improved (compared to Kaguya, which I do also like though). The story is pretty dark in places, (well not like Berserk or Fire Punch dark) with some violence here and there, but that's actually a good point. It is centered around revenge, the main character reincarnates and an event messes up his life (again) and he starts living for revenge. We see character development in all the characters as they start their life in the entertainment world (overall setting). There are also quite the number of twists, which is another reason why it's a fun read. If you decide to read it, I hope you have fun!
!!! i loved this animanga so much omg
i'd have to say that one of the best things abt it was just how fleshed out each character was ! often times in stories the focus is on the main couple and maybe a side couple here and there, but for kimi ni todoke you really come to love each and every character no matter how small you think their role might be. to add, every plot point has a purpose and is not simply added to drag the story on + the character development and relationships between characters (not just romantic) are so lovely to see ! i would hands down put it as one of the best coming-of-age shoujo mangas out there and would def rec it to anyone ^^ (the anime is amazing, and if you plan on watching it would def say to continue w the manga ! the story has a lovely conclusion just as good as the beginning was ^^)
Oshi no Ko/ My Child Star Is about a guy reincarnated as an idol’s child. The story is mainly centered around revenge and is character driven. The manga delves into the entertainment world calling bluntly calling idols,”fake” The art style is amazing, it’s incredibly unpredictable, and the characters feel real and have great development. Honestly this is pretty difficult so pick out the good point without spoiling anything, so if you’re interested give it a shot.
@Sobann
Domestic na Kanojo
So... Lets hear it.
@CultureKing
Houseki no Kuni
I'm not fond of excessive CG in a show, so maybe I could use this as a resort to return my favour about watching the anime later on. However, I don't need the explanation why x is good or why y is one of the best in your opinion - I need a more objective perspective. And I will wait of what you can explain...
So, let's hear it.
Series is really similar to Attack on Titan. Plot runs on a large background mystery, and is generally just has a ton of tension. Characters are really solid, but some don’t get much development bc of the large cast. Art style is pretty unique, closest thing I can think of in terms of art is Bleach.
@UltimateConservative
Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e 2nensei hen
It seems there's much you like about this show/ manga, so give me an accurate description which makes it sound as appealing as possible. You may include what you like, what other shows it resembles etc.
