I found the first two episodes confusing. Does it stay that way or is it less confusing later on? Thanks!
The show will always use non-linear narrative, if you have a problem with that then I'm sorry but your confusion will carry on.
The appeal of the series is to experience events from different prospectives and then piecing it all together. The first 3 episodes are a self-contained vignette that you should be able to understand if you want to put in the effort of remembering the different plotlines. If you don't find that appealing it's probably not your type of show
It certainly got easier to understand since E03.
If you had trouble understanding stuff, take a look at my posts about the show. Since the first episodes were very confusing, I got into the habit of taking notes on every character, organization, and plot-device to help myself piece stuff together.
But yeah, E04-05 are super straight forward for now.
I can see how it's confusing for some but I find it simple to follow the chain of events. My issue is that it's so boring. 5 episodes in and still, they introduce more characters and giving lesser and lesser reasons to care about them or be invested in them. I can't remember being so bored in watching an anime series like Boogiepop.
To answer to the question : "Yup".
At the beginning, it will effectively be confusing because we do not have a proper introduction due to the unusual direction. As watchers, we suddenly "pop" in an ongoing action. And like a stranger appearing in the middle of a fight, it looks highly awkward.
The advice I will give to people with this kind of shows is not to think too much. At a moment or another, things will be explained in the most explicit way. Just let yourself carried with the flow and appreciate as much as you can the convoluted philosophies that the series delivers. At the end, understanding will appear to be very intuitive and the shows, easier to follow.
So far, Boogiepop is, at least for me, a big and fascinating metaphor of mental disorders. Is all about finding the meaning and the darkness inside yourself.
