:)
From someone who has read the manga before watching this, i can safely say this adaptation was perfect, and I wish the anime industry would learn from this one.
I can only feel sad for every manga that was betrayed by it's adaptation.
Also, while i'm at it, i only feel sad that Misuzu never got any conclusion. And i don't mean she getting together with someone. Rather, it kinda focuses on how Misuzu subconsciously manipulated Tomo into believing her problem was her poor femininity, because she ultimately was afraid of losing her friend, which was an interesting development plot for her, but suddenly it was solved. I think Misuzu was the deepest character in this show, and it is a shame that by the last arc she is only a background character.
I have a genuine question because I remember people complaining about “oh man this last episode is going to not be good…. The manga ending wasn’t good”. Was this the same as the manga ending ? Because this seemed 100% fine and a good ending to me so I’m curious now.
I think this whole sequence "worked" really well in the anime, because it was essentially a single episode.
In the manga, there was a lot of drama until we finally get a confession, and suddenly there is more drama. Tomo feels really confused because she realizes they confessed to each other, but aren't dating. For the people reading, it felt like the author was dragging the ending... I mean, it doesnt make sense they aren't dating. This last sequence, at least to me, was supposed to be about they feeling conscious of each other despide having spent all of these years together, so "still not dating" felt like a cheap plot. It doesn't make sense Tomo's father suddenly doesn't approve their relationshiup, since he liked Jun and never demanded that he should be able to protect Tomo, since, well, Tomo can take care of herself.
This is why i praise this adaptation so much. They made a kinda bad final arc into a great episode.
Tomo > Tenshi next door if nothing else but because there was an actual kiss in the final episode.
Excellent finale and I'm glad they're all cute and dating and being happy.
Not to mention, Tomo was really really cute in the movie date outfit. She really went all out on it and then the earrings too.
I was wary of this episode because when I read this series, I genuinely didn't like the quick rug pull of "They did it!...oh wait, turns out not yet" especially with this dad thing. However, anime made me feel different about it just slightly. Especially because of Takahashi's energy throughout the entire episode and the way they did their final moments outside the dojo. Love this series
Just like with the manga, I rated this series 4/5. I really enjoy the comedy, but I wish there was a bit more romance. The finale itself was great, probably better than the manga equivalent. But my main issue with the anime/manga is the fact that I do not like the 2 main characters that much, I do love Carol and Misuzu, they were better written in my opinion. The story had its issues, but it was good. To me, it was a solid anime and a great adaptation.
I mostly like this anime because of the unique plot, I hate cliche rom-com animes where the girl is super childish in every way to be called cute. I love how in this the female mc is portrayed as a badass woman.
Now talking about what I didn’t like. I may had high expectations for this. Sadly, for me, it was ruined by Misuzu’s misogynistic beliefs. Tomo and Jun would’ve been great just the way they were, if Tomo doesn’t feel comfortable wearing heels and makeup so be it, she shouldn’t change for anyone. As for the male mc, Jun, he was a walking green flag. Except for the last scene when he says "the man should be the one to ask the girl out".
So yeah, basically, I have mixed feelings for this show, but overall, it was nice to see a badass tomboy lead in anime, so I’m going to cut it some slack and give it a high rating for that one reason.
