I'm a big fan of slasher movies, just got back from seeing Scream 6, and thought: are there any anime that are similar to a slasher film? I know there's the horror genre and classic "Japanese Style" horror, but I guess I'm specifically inquiring about the classic US style: "bad guy/monster killing people" that was popular in the 80s like Halloween or Friday, or maybe the more "supernatural horror" like Hellraiser or the Babadook. Both TV Shows and Movies are good (though I won't turn away manga recs).
I don't think Higurashi is really what he asked, it's more mystery/thriller than a slasher. Maybe the closest thing I can think is this one
Denpa Teki na Kanojo
Uhhhh probably but it depends. The issue is, slashers are kind of a distinctly American or at least western concept in origin. Not that Japanese horror doesn't have any or can't resemble a slasher, but, the way Japanese horror handles those ideas is often very different. The only things I can think of are also kinda just unsubbed or stuff I've only heard of rather than "have seen." Maybe look into a lot of older OVA content for a start, though.
I figured as much. Japanese horror has it's own distinct style, whether it's Ringu or Junji Ito. Was just curious to see if there was one out there, even if not anime.
Oh 100%/understandable.
likewise, some definitely do exist, just not that I know of lmao.
There is Illbleed on Sega Dreamcast, in terms of video games though! It's a huge throwback to older slasher movies to the point it uses English audio in the JP version, and has a list of slasher/horror recommendations in some of the packing/extra material. If you like survival horror, give it a look!
Roots Search
space entity picks off members of a space crew one by one. i don't remember much about it (it's pretty sucky) but it's definitely an example!
i haven't seen either of these yet, but i think they're both generally alien rip offs (although lily C.A.T comes closer to looking and feeling like the thing, apparently).
Alien from the Darkness
this is mostly lesbian porn to be honest, but it follows the same formula as the others on this list.
in general you probably want to be looking at 80s and 90s OVAs, when there was more of a market for these kinds of overly violent stories and visuals.
For anyone else looking at this thread, I've been recommended the Manga Pumpkin Night and from the description, it looks like a good fit.
Pumpkin Night
Another gave me western horror vibes at the start. Series has a big tonal shift tho.
Devilman The Birth
Devilman Crybaby both very good (imo the ova is better than the start of the series but the rest of the series is better than the 2 sequel ovas. just pick the one that interests u) While not traditional slasher. Episode 1 and the first ova both have a slasher like sequence. Also good body horror.
absolutely this, 100%.
Aru Zombie Shoujo no Sainan
it's literally just a terrible slasher film in anime form
