There's not much to elaborate tbh. The Dragon Ball franchise is huge and it has influenced japanese animation all these years, even until now. The thing is, as long as I grew up I found many plot holes and fillers that make me feel it's an average (even maybe bad) anime.
So, what's your opinion?
I would say hell no. People tend to forget how far ahead of it's time dbz was. No anime ever was that much better than anything else, and no anime ever has influenced japanese animation, nevermind, no anime ever has influenced the WORLD of entertainment as much as the Dragon Ball franchise did and keeps doing. Now of course animes airing those days are better than dbz in literally every point if not the characters, but you can't compare it to something that aired 30 years ago
Dragon Ball was the absolute best of it's time and most of it's fans are people that grew up with it. It's impact on the world is undeniable as it's one of the pillars that helped anime/manga become what it is today. By opening the market and also by inspiring countless of other series. Of course now everything evolved but there are still multiple layers of interpretation to the series.
It's not to the extent that you think, dragon ball is a decent anime (I grew up with it as a kid and looking now it's fine but not a masterpiece) and it definitely has its issues as you mentioned. However, ppl have been railing and joking about it for years about its issues, be it the pacing, powerscaling, characters getting the short stick, etc. Lots of ppl are familar with how many issues it has or how some things haven't aged well, it's just that it's arguably the most influential anime/manga of all time which is why it is still considered so high.
I don't think it is. It's classic, and has set a standard. There's nothing overrated about that. I feel it deserves such praises for what it has accomplished.
I find words like 'overrated' so unnecessary, and this isn't a personal jab at you OP. but it seems to be a term thrown around so much in anime communities that it gets tiring.
No. DBZ isn't overrated. I would say overrated is a stupid term. It means that you are saying that only a certain amount of people are allowed to like it.
Besides that you have to consider a lot of things when rating DBZ.
Back then when DBZ was airing it was the first anime to do a lot of new things or popularize it such as
Back then nothing was like DBZ especially when DBZ got to west. There was nothing to compete DBZ. Most of its demographics consisted of teen and kids so I don't think anyone cared about plot holes. But even so since DBZ was either first to ever do it or popularize it so I am usually lenient on it. It is like comparing some car from 1880's to 2019. Obviously the cars today are going to be better. If you drive car from 1880 now you are going to find issues in it but that doesn't means it was bad back then. Anime that came after DBZ tried to copy DBZ in a lot of ways. Some improved while other not. It might be an average anime by today's standard because there are million of them but back then it was truly a unique experience.
No its not. Dragon Ball Z mainly was something new to the anime world, it did things uniquely in its time, nowadays yeah it isnt anything new, why you may ask? because all the new ones that are out now got their ideas or at least some of it from DBZ's success. DBZ and Pokemon bridged the anime world to the west which no anime has done back then and is only popular now in the west because of this series.
I never did like the Dragonball frenchise. I find it repetitive and dull. The characters look too similar, the fights are all the same, every new season there's a new "final form" that is anything but final, they have the amazing potential of the concept of "fusion" but waste it because the fusions are not creative and just look like a bigger buffer version of one of the characters... It's just not my cup of tea. Nothing against people who like it tho, I can see the appeal
