Watching gabimaru beat the tensu's ass was amazing
i have these weird feelings with gabimaru, like hes super strong and stuff but like?? idk feels like theres too much of a plot armor on him
A staple of all shounen is that the main character gets stronger over time. I agree, all these fights so far it feels like he hasn't really struggled, like this man is just too strong. Sure he didn't win against orange hair, but they're kinda setup to be the final bosses of the island so he did a little too well for a first encounter. I honestly have no clue how they're going to power scale or progress anything in an interesting way, not to say that they won't be able to
He was actually strugling and almost died tho, Gabimaru lived enough to know how to adapt to situations and he's kinda OP but also there's other reasons to how he could hurt Zhu Jin so much (not spoiling tho)
but yeah this beggining is just setting how the Tensen are not invincible and Gabimaru is a weakness to Zhu Jin (for reasons) but he will struggle more from here onward, there's plot armor yes but there's actually some real hardcore dangers that you feel like they can die at any time
There are seven divinities, they have a leader, they can change shape (as well as sex) but above all they are not invincible, on the contrary these "landed humans", as they call them, really seem to have arrived on purpose to defeat them. I'm now certain that Mei is connected to them. We also saw this famous immortality elixir and discovered the fate of the island's inhabitants, how much important information, the contrast between the flowers and the blood always impresses me. Meanwhile, Gabimaru may have found new valid companions!
My thoughts about the episode:
This episode was definitely worth waiting the 2 weeks for. I initially really enjoyed the first 2 EP's of the series, but I felt there was a dip in quality after that. It's really nice to see that the producers pulled themselves together and made a comeback (and not even a cheap one at that). The past 3 episodes have all been absolute bangers. The plot is clearly progressing each week and the worldbuilding is above average as well.
Most of this episode was combat and it was decent. I wouldn't say that I was on the edge of my seat the whole time or that I was worried for Gabimaru, but I did enjoy the fight quite a bit.
The dream sequence with Yui was done really well though, I think that might be my favorite scene from this EP.
Seeing the Tensen on screen just makes me happy by default, I still adore their concept and the attitude they hold towards humans.
The story of the tree people was pretty moving. I was sad for tree bro. I don't wanna see him lose awareness.
About Yuzuriha though, as much as she was hyped up by fans, I don't like her as a character that much. Her behavior is very stereotypical and predictable, I definitely don't see her as a human being with free will and I would say that this is because of weak writing. Nothing unsalvageable, but I'd love to see her character and personality get expanded on.
Overall not a bad episode. Maybe slightly below the recent ones, but I definitely like where this is going.
See y'all next week

agreed on the wait. gabimaru is actually starting to scare me more. how is this tiny little teenager (or any of the surviving criminals, really) even remotely a match for the tensen?
also, yuzuriha is polarizing for sure. i love that she's such a shit-stirring asshole, but she isn't everyone's cup of tea. she does become far more useful later, though. i really like what the mangaka does with her, but we might not see it animated this season...

Just to clarify, I'm not saying that I do not like the character trope that she represents or that I find the concept of her character appalling. Tropes can be done well, but in my personal opinion that is not the case for Yuzuriha, or at least not yet. She just seems kinda empty. Like I don't feel like her character is multi-layered, which I do think is a problem.
i'm actually referring to yuzuriha herself, not the archetype she represents. i usually don't like this trope at all and was surprised to find myself liking her as a character. it's partially because no one else (except maybe senta?) takes her shit seriously.
i agree that she doesn't yet have much dimensionality to her. a shame, because that's not true of the other survivors.
