I'm calling this game 'telephone' because it has a similar feeling of continuing until you get far from the original. The rules are as such:
It should both function as a way to get recommendations, (since I always wonder if there's similar stuff out there when I finish a good anime) and a fun game to see how far we can get from the original.
Try and think beyond just 'same genre'. For example, Witch From Mercury probably wouldn't work as a response to Neon Genesis Evangelion because they're too different even though they're both mecha anime. However, Eureka Seven would, or outside the mecha genre, you could reply with something like Revolutionary Girl Utena; as it's a 90s anime with a similar style, a majority teenage cast, and psychological elements. Anything that scratches the same itch in your brain works.
Try and use somewhat well known shows to keep the game going. If it's been more than a week since the last comment, a new train can be started.
Alright, this might be a bit far-fetched, but
Heion Sedai no Idatentachi
Never watched both, but isn't the main character similar?
The Misfit of Demon King Academy Historys Strongest Demon King Reincarnates and Goes to School with His Descendants
Mudazumo Naki Kaikaku
Great political parody about world leaders playing mahjong. The humor is really similar to SZS
Baki Hanma
George Bush is in it
Both are about guys punching each other
Tokyo Revengers Season 2 Part 2
Takeshi and Hijikata both have an M shaped haircut
Gintama
Also a parody of anime at large, uses references to other properties and the industry itself in a similar way to gintama
I don't like when gintama is called a parody anime it's its own thing </3
Were we not watching the same show for the first 200 episodes?
I mean, I think both ‘it’s a parody’ and it’s not a parody’ are pretty accurate statements. Even the premise is kind of a Rurouni Kenshin spoof and we get multi-episode parody arcs, but on the other hand, it’s annoying when people assume it’s all just references to other stuff, especially because it’s got its own hyper-specific running jokes as well as its own serious story.
I think the misunderstanding comes from not understanding that gintama is a comedy series with action as opposed to an action series with comedy like most other things that come out of shonen jump. I didn't mean to say it is all parody, but it is disingenuous to say it isn't a major part of the series, especially for new viewers going in
@GorboGrandman girls,cats,meta... sounds about right
@Freeren More cats, slice of life comedy, Cute Girls doing Cute Things
Azumanga Daioh
