Should i watch the remake or the old first ? I heard mixed opinions on the old Spice and wolf anime.
new one is a retelling of the entire story, so feel free to start with whichever one you like . personally i've watched the old one and its one of my all time favorite anime ever, but the new animation and pacing feel fresh and still nice to watch
TLDR: if you dont want to wait for episodes watch the old one, but if you dont mind waiting maybe watch this new one
It's hard to say off of just one episode, but I personally vastly prefer the direction and pacing of the original so far (and the original op/ed are way better)
The original does skip some important stuff though, so the new version might end up being how you have to watch it depending how far it goes
How would anyone be able to have an informed opinion on this question before the new one is at least more than just 1 episode...?
The stated goals of the remake indelibly mark it as a different enough work to matter.
As proof, twice in just the first episode we saw the story follow the LN where the original anime deviated. Both of which promise to have a rippling effect throughout the story, even beyond the first season.
fair enough I suppose, so do you think its worth watching the original to gain a better appreciation of the changes made in the remake?
If you already are interested in the story it wouldn't be hard to marathon the original. That way you could find out if you really want to stick with the remake ahead of time. It's a story of two lonely people finding each other and growing close as they banter back and forth while getting into adventures revolving around late medieval economics. You will learn about monetary policy whether you want to or not.
If you prefer dubs, watch the original. If you don't care about dubs or want a story that sticks close to the LN and thus will actually adapt past the second season of the original watch the 2024 remake.
Since we've only got the one episode so far it's hard to say much beyond that.
Based purely on the first episode, it is a hard reboot when compared to the original anime. I have not read the LN, so I cannot compare. The original anime, while being on the slower end of story telling and a bit hard to follow at times, does have a nice nostalgic charm to it and I have enjoyed watching it. It seems like it has the same predicament as FMA & FMAB and Hellsing & Hellsing Ultimate. One anime version releasing during the production of the source material and another after the source material finished. Though technically speaking, Spice & Wolf LN is still ongoing, but the main story is finished and is releasing a side story that takes place after the end (not to be confused with Wolf & Parchment.
TL;DR: You don't have to watch the old one, but it's charming in it's own way.
The new one is more faithful to the source material so far plus had better intro imo(Both the opening scene with that conversation and the holo intro). The music is goated in both but Idk about the op since thats personal preference so not going to compare that.
The director for both is the same and he is a huge fan of the novels so generally he puts his heart into it and you can clearly see that.
So generally stick with the new one BUT if you have the time, do read the novels as they are the best way to experience the story.(and vastly superior to both versions shown)
Still while a bit fast, it is a good adaptation so far,
Edit: Some folks who havent even touched the source material are overreacting way to much.
Watch the old one it has more heart.
Agreed. Also English dub because it fits more with the western medieval style buildings. I watched 470+ anime in sub but this is one of the best dubs
That I can agree with. While I have "only" watched about 100 anime in dub, the original Spice & Wolf is one of the few I never re-watched as subbed. The VAs of Holo and Lawrence do such a good job, I think it cant compare to the japanese dub.
to be entirely frank, both the sub, and dub for S&W are 10/10s.
Jun Fukuyama, and Ami Koshimizu do an amazing job, and so do J. Micheal Tatum and Brina Palencia in their respective roles.
I have both BluRays, and i've made it so that I can effortlessly switch between audio tracks when watching.
It's a joy to hear the emotion both versions have, I highly recommend that any fan of the series puts the time in to hear both.
I personally like the visual style of the previous one more, it kind of has that vibe, but as a reader and as I saw there it seems that this one will stick more to the novel (there is not much difference either) e.g. the one who cuts the wheat in the old one It's a woman and in the new one it's a man (novel/manga), summarizing the one that catches your attention the most.
Both, the first of each one and then the old one, so you can compare. You can of course read the light novels if you have the patience of reading a script (the style is another run-of-the-mill LN) or the manga with the skips it has and stuff. The reason of recommending the manga is you get a lot of hot pics of Holo and learn about the story anyways in much less time. But returning to the important point, I'd say watch both because whereas the original is eye candy and both opening and ending are better (in the new one they're trying to imitate them), the new one is closer to the books, at least from what's shown in the first episode, previews and other intel. And well, it's likely to be finished this time, unlike the old version.
It's too early to tell, honestly. The same studio did the Higurashi reboot, which I didn't care for. I would only recommend the original Koro ni and Koro ni Kai to folks. But so far, as of episode 1, I am enjoying the new S&W just fine.
If I were in your situation, I guess I would enjoy the hype of watching a new series as it airs. Then try the originals later if you really enjoyed it.
I also do recommend the novels. Some of the later volumes get a little boring, but well worth the read if you're into LNs.
It pains me to write that, but, if you watch the old one and come back to watch the remake, you'll get angry at how they managed to completely remove the soul, and by that I mean the charisma of the actors, the ambience, the colors and the art style, of the anime and also fail with these horrendous opening and ending songs.
Although, there is one good thing the new one has, it follows strictly, at least as of this comment time, the LN's story and I know that because I am reading, but that's it.
