Good first episode, CGI isn't so bad and the musics are good honestly looks promising
People's relationship with CGI is always negative, whatever the quality. To say that the CGI is average would be to say that the anime is rather average in its animation, and that would be a lie. The CGI in Girls Band Cry isn't "average", it's objectively good. The dinamism is there, the scenery works well with 3D, the characters don't lack facial expression. In general, we tend to accept bad 2D rather than good CGI.
Bad CGI is often recognizable with a lack of expression and jerky animation. I don't think "Girls Band Cry" can be considered average CGI.
The episode was really surprising, and the staging and choreography of the opening looked very polished. I can't wait to see it!

CGI anime has come incredibly far, i've been a fan of Houseki no Kuni and always give 3D anime a shot, and this show has incredible and lively animation especially for such a "casual" slice of life genre, hopefully we get more studios adapting in 3D and more viewers accepting 3D animation, cause it can pull off so many things which just wouldn't work with 2D animation, raaaagh
Unless you're GoHands, people typically complain about CGI when it's blended into 2D art. I've personally never had an issue with full CGI anime like Land of the Lustrous, Hi Score Girl, Knights of Sidonia, etc.
Honestly I thought the CGI was very fine for the actual characters the whole choreo for the performance at the end was very well done and it makes me excited to see how bigger shows will be.
My only issue of course is the CGI primarily for the NPC characters because it is glaring sometimes but other then that I enjoyed it.
Got a good chuckle out of Nina flipping off the food workers
The first thing I noticed was definitely the CGI. I thought I wouldn't be able to focus, but the rest of this episode took my attention away, and by the end, I honestly found it charming. The expressions were surprisingly expressive. The style reminds me of mobile games, especially The Idol Master mobile entries like the Cinderella Girls game, for example. (the similarity is insane)
The VA work fit the visuals for the most part, and really enjoyed the singing. The backing soundtrack is what I found really fantastic though.
The animation's unexpectedly good, and Jesus Christ, I love how the conversations don't feel like anime conversations at all - really makes you more immersed in what the show's trying to tell. Feels like the conflict between her and the singer she's a fan of happened and got solved too abruptly as a consequence of the conversations being less dramatic and "anime-like," though.
Despite the great use of expressive CGI and gorgeous environmental compositing, I couldn’t help but feel conflicted coming away from this episode. The beats of the episode felt more appropriate to a first quarter season climax, at which point the first major conflict between protagonists comes to a head. The argument in the home; running in the rain; and subsequent “cathartic” jam sesh at the end all reinforce my perception that the ending outro song moment was prematurely earned. The pair barely know each other after a single evening. They have the most tenuous of common ground in their leaving home to strike it out on their own.
Nina singing also caught me off guard. We didn't really get affirmation that she could sing to that level. I know there was the comment by Momoka that she “knew the classics” but the scene pivoted in a somewhat more melodramatic direction instead of letting the audience hear her sing and Momoka react in some positive or amazed manner. That would've brought the singing at the end full circle in a more narratively satisfying callback.
I did like the repeated use of the vignetting and ephemeral lines coming off of Nina as an indication of some trauma response or disassociation. Especially the call with her family you could immediately tell she was in a different headspace when confronted with the kind of dismissive and emotionally neglectful remarks from her parents. And again arguing with Momoka.
Found it funny the rival band just joined in without much protest.
Don't get me wrong each sequence was animated beautifully and I like each sequence conceptually, just not how fast they occurred in the overall scheme of things. Unearned melodrama is my takeaway so far. Hopefully its just a symptom of trying to make an impactful and emotional first episode and not an indication of the rest of the seasons writing quality.
I just really really enjoyed it. The CGI was so fluid and expressive, like nothing I've seen before. Maybe land of the lustrous may have been equivalent? But that show I couldn't be interested in. This show I can. It is unfortunate that the sub situation is so poor, but I watched it raw anyway, and will just continue to do so. Streaming sites have made a major fail not picking this one up
honestly I was already sold on this show from the trailers alone. I liked how bouncy the character animations are, if that makes sense. Like the part with Nina getting the gyudon, the part where Nina mistook Momoka having a bf after seeing the roomie come in, etc. Didn't think a studio like Toei could produce something like this, I thought studio orange monopolized good CGI lol
My only gripe so far is when they were running away the background wasn't moving as fast as I thought should so really it looked more like they were just power walking instead of running lol overall an enjoyable watch still
I was really surprised by how amazing the animation was. Usually with 3D animation, my thought is "This was animated well enough that it would match a good 2D show." But this hit that level of quality Orange productions tend to hit of "This was animated so well BECAUSE it's in 3D. Even just the general visual presentation was pretty stellar. Really excited to see what they can do with this.
why is it always all girl bands?
actually don't think the CGI looks all that great, especially considering some of the modern competition. certainly spent time on the expressions which look pretty decent and it's miles above Berserk (lol). that scene in the rain looks...silly.
might still check it out based on word of mouth here.
There is nothing special to say about the characters or story so I'm coming right to the point.
It looks very dynamic and the movement and expressions look very believable and at times interesting but I cought myself being overly bored by the lack of outlines.
A lot of shots just look extremely stale especially with the visual style having no personality at all aside from some extra effects
Maybe I keep watching it when I feel like watching some 3dcgi as escapism from all the animation errors in 2d animation haha
What an amazing first episode!! I can already tell that I'm gonna love this show.
You can just feel the passion coming from Nina and how strong her will is to pursue her dream. She moves to Tokyo by herself with no plans, everyone around her belittling her dream, telling her to give up entirely but she keeps moving forward.
I love how passionate Nina gets when talking about her dreams, going so far as to start an argument with her favorite artist who she just met. I'm also a big fan of how she doesn't hold back when she knows she's right. She's not scared to voice how she truly feels and to me that's super refreshing to see.
Momoka is basically Nina but 3 years in the future. She moved to the big city, bright eyed and full of dreams just like Nina. She wanted to pursue her dreams and make it big but life isn't that easy. After 3 years of working non stop and not making it anywhere she's finally calling it quits and giving up.
I really like the contrast between the two of them. I think Nina can reignite the spark that Momoka has lost and Momoka has the experience to guide Nina along the way. Momoka didn't quite make it to where she wanted to be but Nina is what she needs to reignite her passion and try again.
I'm a big fan of how raw and real the emotions in the show are. I know it's only the first episode but it did such an amazing job of showcasing the characters. It's gonna be quite the ride and I'm here for it!!
