That scene was pretty badass, just unfortunate that he had to get overconfident again...
That scene. Damn.
My face must have been the same. When she woke up I kinda excepted something like she lost her memories... I did not expect her to be possibly disabled holy shit...
They got Zenith, but at the cost of Rudy left hand and his fathers life... And then she is not even herself... I want to blame Rudy's overconfidence but I feel like this time it's a mistake that can easily happen, he just lost focus for a second there...
Next episode when they go home I somehow expect something even worse to happen... We haven't heard from Sylphy in a while now. I am not sure loosing his hand and his father is the only thing he will regret... If he never went Paul would probably still have died but they wouldn't have found Zenith and he wouldn't have lost his hand. This can't be over yet.
What an episode....and the last scene when her mother lost her memories or some sort.
oh my gosh
My face was pretty much the same as Rudy's... With the tone of the show it seemed more like she is now... mentally not the same anymore. Disabled?
To say it brashly: I fucking hope she is not a vegetable now.
Also, I heard that what happened to Zenith was that she doesn't lose her memories. She just becomes a Niko but can't talk and move freely
I don't wanna get spoilered, I was pissed enough that I got randomly spoilered about Paul's death because a random leakers account got put onto my twitter frontpage by the algortihm :(
The same happened to me but with a different spoiler and it was youtube shorts instead of twitter.
like who the fuck spoils a show the first 5 seconds of a youtube short that ANYBODY can randomly watch while scrolling. Needless to say I believe people who post spoilers without warning deserve to be dropped in the middle of the desert/ocean with nothing but their regrets until they die... alone.
Maybe it was my own fault because I checked the account before for ONK spoilers but come on... There is a function which blurs spoiler images at least use it you know? But I guess that tanks their engagement.
It was the same with all kinds of JJK spoilers. I don't read the manga and only watch the anime and still every time something "big" happens I get spoilered in some way...
I was about to watch demon slayer after this, not in the mood right now ngl.
I can see why Hitogami said he was gonna regret saving Zenith. He lost Paul, his left arm and Zenith possibly disabled for life. If he hadn't gone, Paul may never have been able to get to the guardian and given up. Only loss that could have happened was Roxy which would have been really sad. And who knows, things could get even worse from here because he didn't mate with Pursena or Linia that Hitogami told him to do (that's pure speculation though). And who knows if Sylphie's delivery went safe (depending on it he makes it before or not). Either way, I feel like reaching a happy ending this season will be hard but let's hope for the best
That doesn't make much sense imo.
If he never went there it is entirely possible that both Roxy and Paul would have died. He was hellbent on saving Zenith at any cost, you think he would have stopped?.. I think he wouldn't give up even if the other members left the party. So worst case scenario we would have Paul and Roxy dead, and Zenith still trapped into that crystal. Possibly other members of the party dead as well.
And at least now they can try to heal her, so Zenith being in this state isn't worse.
Ofc we don't know what other implications this will have so far. Although the thing with Pursena and Linia was likely just a bait.
This is all speculation though. I can see what you're thinking but I think it was possible he could have stopped since they didn't know what to do in the labyrinth, when Rudy saw Paul he was in a "I don't know wft to do" state.
And I believe Hitogami's advice has to be followed. He knows both options led to regret but not taking his advice leads to more regret.
I kinda agree with Kappejoj-san here. At this point I rly think that it's act obligatory for Rudy to follow Hitogami's advice.
So ig there's gonna be more misery and regret for not mating with pursena...
tldr.
I RLY NEED A S3 TT
I rly dont want a cliffhanger with a sad ending TT
just breaks ma heart too much
At this point I rly think that it's act obligatory for Rudy to follow Hitogami's advice.
I highly doubt that lol
He is a god that can appear on people's dreams, that is simply one of the best way to manipulate people. Start by earning their trust with real advices... You know where this goes.
If he actually wanted to help Rudeus, what is stopping him from appearing in Paul's dreams? Or Roxy's? Or anyone else that was there lmao
He could just relay the information and save the day! But noo, Rudeus gotta get fucked one way or another...
He might as well be making some of those problems himself.
As an LN reader, I've been looking forward to this episode since the anime started and fucking hell did it not disappoint. I love how we saw what happened the same way Rudeus did. We didn't see anything that happened to Paul until Rudy did, lesser stories would have hyper-focused on the moment of his death but here we don't even see it happen. Just, one minute Paul is there, the next he's not. Absolutely stellar.
I also really love the use of the ED, complete silence broken up only by Lilia. Because you know for a fact that Rudeus isn't paying attention to anything going on around him in that moment, but those simple words from Lilia somewhat brought him back into reality.
Zenith's lack of response from the word "mother" really hammered in Rudeus' monologue earlier "just a stranger I used to live with for 7 years". Everytime he mutters something it ends up coming true. The same has happened when he worried "I might lose a hand or one of my parents" after hearing hitogami's advice.
The way it was presented was amazing, as if Rudy's words and actions were the trigger. Rifujin you cruel man.
Rudeus spaces out not once, but twice in a row? Feels cheap man. Fuck, what a cheap way for Paul to get killed, feels nonsensical and forced to me. But yeah, otherwise well done, great episode, had me on the edge of my seat.
He didn't space out. In the LN, the Hydra did an attack that had never been seen before, and because of the Hydra's huge body, Rudy's Foresight Eye was covered by its entire body so Rudy couldn't see anything. Unfortunate they didn't anime that part in
There was just one left. We’d won this. After coming this far, we
wouldn’t give it the chance to recover. Even if its final head were
immortal, we could easily deal with it now that the others were
gone.
It was then, just as I was using my magic to cauterize the second
to last stump, that the hydra’s body trembled. I didn’t know what
that movement meant. I could see it with my Eye of Foresight, but I
didn’t understand it. The creature was too big.
“You moron!”
“Wait—!”
Before I realized what was happening, Paul had slammed me
out of the way. Something enormous came crashing down right in
front of my eyes.
But...it didn’t have a head anymore?
No—there was no head, but it did still have a neck.
The hydra was slinging its headless necks around like spiked
whips—all eight of them! Every one of them was coated in tough
scales that could shred flesh like a cheese grater. It whipped those
necks around all at once, mowing down anything in the vicinity.
“Ruuudyyyyy!” Paul screamed, driving his foot into me to kick
me out of the way.
Almost simultaneously, a thud resounded as something
smashed to the ground right where I’d been a moment ago, in the
once-empty space that had existed between Paul and me.
Devil eye nerfed (hopefully next fight writer doesn't forget oopsie)
It wasn't nerfed. Rudy could not react to that attack because of its speed and his lack of attention because of intensity of the fight (Also remember Rudy is still inexperienced in comparison with his father and other party members). So the only way to stay out of it was to Paul push him away.
Just the eye is me putting it kindly. Rudy was nerfed as a whole to less than Roxi's levels lol. Paul died a cheap death.
How so? It was established that the Hydra could only be hurt by magic at point blank range, Rudeus cannot use Touki, so one solid hit on him by said Hydra and he's fucking dead instantly. He can't use his signature quagmire or stone cannons against it, because they wouldn't do anything. He can't exactly nuke the thing like he did to Badigadi because he would just kill everyone in the room. Rudeus has never been in a fight like this before, this is his first experience with a labyrinth.
Saying "Rudy was nerfed as a whole to less than Roxy's level" also doesn't make any sense. Roxy is an incredible strong mage in her own right, and a very experienced Labyrinth clearer, even having a reputation for clearing them on her own. At this point in the story the only things Rudeus has over Roxy are his eye of foresight, which was useless against the Hydra, his near limitless mana pool which again, was useless because it was immune to magic aside from burning the heads and his incantation-less magic which yet again was useless in this situation. He wasn't nerfed at all, you just don't understand what his strengths and weaknesses are.
Just watched the fight.
He could have used the stone spikes to distract the hydra...
They worked in the last second butchering his head to. He could have used his purple ball (the one against one of the forces at the end of season 1) by making them take cover behind him though would be a bit risky to pull though not as risky as all the other stunts shown.
His arsenal is almost every type of magic and we dont even see him using most of it.
He has experience against a ton of monsters as well to make up for the labyrinths especially since he was with the experienced characters. He was very conveniently distracted at a very convenient moment and at a very convenient time frame.
I am not a fan of overdramatics but i agree. The death felt really cheap. Shock factor wise, it was also really poor ngl. But It will play a huge role in developing Rudeus however, I can't help but feel it to be a mere plot device.
It absolutely wasn't cheap. Rudeus thought the Hydra was dead, then it attacked before he could react. I think the anime didn't really show it too well, but the Hydra attacked him faster than he could make out, it was only because of Paul's veterancy and ability that he even managed to notice it in time to save his son.
the eye only works on things he can see the hydra was so big it wasnt in his field of vision nothing he could do.

If he never went Paul would probably still have died but they wouldn't have found Zenith and he wouldn't have lost his hand.
If Rudy never went Paul would probably be "alive" (but a state of "being alive" without Zenith close to the "life" Rudy had before he got reincarnated...he was "alive" but not living) because they got to Hydra because of Rudy's/Nanahoshi's book. Also Zenith's state at the end of the episode...let's see if she is "alive" or alive.
If Rudy never went Roxy would be now dead.
Probably some other things that I can't think right now...but probably there are more bad news coming...but let's hope that this is the "ONLY" regret.
Some things to add...I mean we already knew that Zenith is not his "real" mother and Rudy was far from her for the majority of his life in this World...
Complex things right here...
Agreed, it's a very complicated situation with lots of things to consider.
Just about the Zenith not being his real mother. She is his mother in this world, she raised him and loved him unconditionally from day one when he came to this world. For all intents and purposes she is his biological real mother in this world. Yes they didn't see each other for 10 years but still I would say Rudy is way too cold towards both his parents. I think this is another situation where Rudy is simply immature and "wrong?". Instead of accepting and loving the family he got for his second chance, he never really thinks good about them even after everything they have done for him. They are not perfect but Rudy's constant ungratefulness is just another thing which makes him unsympathetic to me.
For all we know it seems like he had a much better relationship with his "isekai" parents than with his real ones, even if they also loved him like we saw in the scenes where he is still in his old world. At least Paul and Zenith managed to get him out with the help of Roxy and made him grow somewhat as a person.
At least that is my opinion about his relationship with his parents.
No.
Look at episode 2 (Season 1) to see what "Rudy" was doing while both of his parents were dead.
Paul and Zenith "never" raised a 34yo at birth "baby".
I mean he (Rudy) overreacted more when Roxy didn't remembered him than at Paul's death...more after Eris "left" him and more when he learned about the teleportation of Sylphie from Paul in episode 16 (Season 1).
Is not that I dislike Rudy or how he acts (I understand him very well...I'm too a "hikikomori" for 10 years now)...What I don't like is when people that are watching the Show pretend that Rudy is something else.
@SuccubusHunter People expect too much from a recovering hikikomori...
@Furas People don't even try to understand a "recovering" hikikomori...
I am not pretending he is anything else but a hiki in recovery.
All I wanted to say is that, from the start his new parents started to support him. It's true that Rudy mostly "raised himself" but from the very start he had a new support system but he never gave a fuck about it. I can understand why, still I would say Rudy never realized how lucky he was that he got Zenith and Paul as his "second parents".
Also about the expecting much. I don't think I do, I understand Rudy is a flawed character and it's part of the show to see him fail over and over again but then overcome it. Since season 2 though it's more often that Rudy just doesn't learn from his mistakes because nobody "corrects" him like they did at the beginning.
Nope.
Even after Paul "corrected" Rudy in episode 3 (Season 1) with Sylphie, he (Rudy) still did something similar to Eris later. (In episode 6 I think...the attempt at stealing her pantsu)
This is what I like...the characters feel human...a human (especially someone as Rudy) will not "just learn" from his mistakes and then never make them again if someone just tell them to not make them again.
People are people...they will make the same mistakes again and again and again.
Not sure we are even talking about the same thing anymore. Have you read the LN? I have not but I found out there will be some things next episode which kinda give my point some credibility but I don't want to spoil.
Next week will be interesting.
You gotta love "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situations, in a world you can heal wounds with a couple from an ancient poem, fight off mythical creatures with magic, stakes gets lower and lower.
You think to yourself, "They can resurrect him, right?", "Maybe Rudeus can rewind time?"...
No, Paul is dead. In a blink of the eye, just like the reality. He's dead. There's nothing to be done. And Zenith? To expect nothing will be wrong with the person who was crystallized for years...
I can't even be mad at that person who hinted the words of Paul were a death flag a couple episodes back. It was still shocking. It still hurt. It still made me tear up...
I'm grateful to every person who made this story and anime happen.
That episode was fucked I really want to read the manga now but it isn't the source so I'll hold off for now, he went through all that and definitely regretted it in the end.
I have a feeling we might have a good chance for a full adaption of the LN in the coming years.
it'll take a long, long time to finish the story. (maybe 10 more years, idk. perhaps a bit less)
at the end of season 2 we'll be 40% into the story and i bet the next seasons will take more time, to avoid what happened with this one (tight scheduling)
but it is very likely that we'll get a full adaptation, since they made the whole damn studio for this
